    I would like to add one more thing to the racket angle and swing path that meaningfully affects both topspin and underspin ... I transitioned to pickleball from competitive table tennis where the third aspect, Racket Speed also significantly affects the amount of spin. It might not as much in pickleball, but still racket speed at contact will affect that amount of spin, at least moderately.

    Outstanding video John!! Players would greatly enhance their game if they would make a decision on which spin and the correlating technique to use on each shot. An analogy would be a baseball batter and deciding which pitch to swing at and which pitch to take. Don't swing at pitches outside the strike zone. In pickleball, play defensive with a small motion with minimal underspin on the balls that are well placed and outside your strike zone or wha is described an not attackable.

    • @johncincolapickleball

      This would fall into the situation of the defensive lob will most likely end up with some backspin on it, but there’s no need to purposely add it. You should be focused on getting the height and distance of the lob correct. The spin will have very little impact on the shot.

  • @grahammustoe6260
    @grahammustoe6260 Před rokem +1

    Hi John,
    I have been teaching spin for a while with the same approach that you describe which depends on the direction of paddle swing path and the direction of the paddle angle at the instant the ball is hit. I am with you 100%! Consistent dependable shots with spin can only be generated by controlling path and paddle directions at contact.
    However when I teach this method to help the students understanding, I emphasise that the direction of the paddle angle at instant of contact must be defined as ‘open’ or ‘closed’ with respect to (wrt) the direction of the paddle’s swing path.
    This is clearly seen in your wall demonstration when you play a topspin shot. At the instant of contact, the direction of the path of the paddle for the topspin shot is almost vertical and the paddle angle direction is ‘closed’ wrt to the direction of the path, but it is ‘open’ wrt the horizontal direction. My reason for mentioning this is that beginning students will swing from low to high with a path direction which is slightly above the horizontal and their topspin shots will consistently go into the net.
    One other comment I’d like to make, concerns the situation when a backspin shot is hit with a high arc. In this case the ball will not skid forward after it bounces but it will check up after the bounce. To counter this a player needs to read the spin and get closer to the bounce of the ball before playing their next shot.

      Hey Graham, thanks for the reply. Definitely all good points and I agree. When I’m making these videos I have to find a balance of what is the critical info to deliver to keep it simple and digestible and what will start to muddy the waters and make the video drag out.

    • @johncincolapickleball
      @johncincolapickleball  Před rokem +1

      It can have a little downward motion. Think of a small u shape.
      I hesitate to say that though because excessive chopping down is usually the biggest fault I see. You can easily create under spin with a flat swing or even a slightly low to high swing though.

  • @130rne
    @130rne Před rokem +1

    If you pay attention to the slow motion shot of top spin, the ball bounces off the wall at the same angle that it hits. It really should bounce at a lower angle because of gravity. This is the same thing that happens when a ball with topspin bounces off the paddle of your opponent. It rolls up their paddle and is often the reason why people hit long balls. Changes the angle of the ball when coming off the paddle face. If you return a power shot and it goes out of bounds, this might be why. To counter, I respond with strong topspin. It pulls the ball down and keeps it within the baseline. Either that, or you have to REALLY pull power out of the shot because anything with heavy topspin is going to bounce off a surface with a sharper angle, meaning a weaker return of a topspin shot can still easily fly out of bounds.
    Opposite is true for bottom spin, if you hit it level the ball will roll down the paddle and into the net. I always watch for the spin of the ball when choosing a return hit.

      Try it, especially on serve and return of serve when the opponent HAS to let the ball bounce. Pay attention to the orientation of the racket face as that determines the direction the ball goes. Opening the racket face a little makes the change of direction after the bounce more extreme.
      The faster the paddle brushes across the ball, the more spin you get.

    Great video but using a dual color ball would really show the spin functionality.

    Swing path & face angle...the two main reasons I can't hit a fairway! The more things change...

    You need to understand the magnus effect first because your first drawing of the flight path is incorrectly described.
    czcams.com/video/2OSrvzNW9FE/video.html
    In you flight path, the ball bounces high because you hit the ball high over the net and the force of gravity caused it to bounce a percentage under its peak height, just as if the ball was statically dropped from the air. The magnus effect is still exerting a force on the ball after the bounce and so keeps the ball lower then a ball hit without top spin. When a ball with top spin hits the floor, it will actually accelerate. forward.

    Not to be that dude but that graph of the top spin shot isn’t exactly correct. The ball goes flatter because it’s going faster and then decelerated but it’s not to that degree. It’s better to think about top spin as an increase in gravity and backspin as a decrease or if you are so aerodynamically as top spin creating downforce and backspin creating lift.

      If you hit the ball hard enough, with enough top spin, it does pretty much take that trajectory, but it takes a _massive_ amount of top. This is even more the case when you play into a headwind. I've received balls absolutely hammered low and flat from the baseline with huge top spin, into a stiff headwind, with the ball barely clearing the net, then diving down into the kitchen so fast my hand could barely pace the downward break. It was a drive and a drop perfectly combined into a supremely nasty shot. Fortunately the wind doesn't blow that hard all that often.

      I pulled those graphs off the old internet 🤷‍♂️. Maybe not perfect but they’re close enough to get the point across. Also as Allan said the ball flight is going to be determined by speed. I’m sure there is a topspin ball flight that would look like that at a certain speed.

    Oh wait a push fade is is under spin and a draw is top spin.
