Gangnam style won SOTY not because it was meaningful, but because it was a trend worldwide. EXO's growl also became popular in Korea which sparked exo's popularity. Taeyang's eyes, nose, lips became popular in korea too due to how the song is about teayang and hyorin who are top celebrities in korea. Even Michael Bublé from the US sang an english version of it. BigBang's bang bang bang wasn't that meaningful of a song either, it was a dance trend back then and also especially it came from one of the top groups of the second generation. Twice's cheer up, signal, and what is love were also trendsetters in korea and japan creating a hallyu wave which earned twice the nickname of nations girl group (of the 3rd gen) and they were awarded with a hallyu culture award from the south korean government itself alongside BTS. BTS's Boy with Luv was so popular in 2019 also considering the fact that it was a collab with a western artist that's why it was chosen as SOTY. And lastly Dynamite, we know how popular Dynamite is, it even got nominated for a grammy, ofc it would win song of the year even if the other nominees have good quality and meaning to their songs
