  • Visualizing the smallest size in the universe - Planck Length & why you can’t go smaller
Visualizing Planck length - why is it the smallest in the universe? Graphics courtesy of Michael and Cary Huang: www.htwins.net/
The scale of the universe is bigger than you can imagine. It is also smaller than you can imagine. The smallest lenth theorized to be possible, the Planck length is about 4 X 10^-35 meters. Just imagine things that are about the size of your body. Things like the giant earthworm that lives along streams in Australia. Or a big beachball, which can be found near oceans and beaches all across America.
Now, lets go smaller by one order of magnitude, so now we are looking at things that are on the scale of about 10 centimeters. These are things like the shrew, or a chicken egg.
Now let’s go a thousand times smaller than the scale of a human being, on the order of 1 millimeter or one thousand of a meter. Here, you’ll find things like a grain of sand or dust mites.
Let’s go 1000 times smaller than this scale. Now we are going a hundred times smaller than the width of a human hair. And ten times smaller than even bacteria. Here, we are going to find things like large viruses.
Let’s keep going to 1000 times smaller this. This is nanometers, or one billionth of a meter. Now we are exploring a universe that we can’t see with optical telescopes. This is on the scale of the size of molecules like DNA and the glucose molecule, that your body uses as its source of energy. And the scale of the biggest atom - cesium.
Let’s go 1000 times smaller than this. This is one trillionth of a meter. This is on the order of the wavelength of gamma rays. This is the highest energy electromagnetic radiation, consisting of the most energetic photons.
Let’s go 1000 times smaller than this. This is 1X 10^-15 or one quadrillionth of a meter. This is the size of particles that make up the nucleus of all atoms, protons and neutrons. The size of a typical atom is however is 100,000 times bigger than its nucleus.
You would think that we are getting close to the smallest size theorized to exist - the plank length. But we are nowhere close. You have to go a quadrillion times smaller than one quadrillionth of a meter, or 1 X 10^-30 of meter….and you would still need to go another 100,000 times smaller than that, or 1 X 10^-35 meters. Then you would be at the plank length. In fact, if an atom was the size of the earth, a planck length would be smaller than the size of an atom - it would be about the size of a proton.
But What exactly is a Planck length and why is it the smallest length?
Planck length is actually derived from the fundamental constants of the universe that define the properties of space-time: The speed of light - c which signifies the maximum speed of communication in the universe. The gravitational constant - G, which signifies the magnitude of gravitational force between two massive objects. And the reduced Planck Constant - h bar, which links how much energy a photon carries depending on its electromagnetic frequency.
These are really the only constants that define the fundamental properties of the universe and all its contents. By taking different mathematical combinations of these constants, and reducing their units, you can get a length. By similar mathematical manipulation, you can also get planck time and planck energy.
But what does this length mean? Why is it significant?
It is the smallest length at which gravity would have an effect. It is the scale and size of the strings in string theory. It is also the scale at which space-time is theorized to become quantized in Loop quantum gravity theory.
So why is it the smallest length? In 1964, C Alden Mead determined that using the known laws of quantum mechanics and laws of gravitation, it is impossible to determine the position of an object to a precision smaller than the Planck length. So from what is currently known about quantum mechanics, a length smaller than the Planck length has no meaning.
Note that I said “known” laws. It is possible that at lengths smaller than the Planck scale, gravity or quantum mechanics behaves completely differently, that we may not yet know about. This is quite possible. So until we find out what happens at such small scales, we will need to wait for a future Einstein to reveal this to us.
One of the remarkable things about Planck length is that since it is derived from the fundamental constants of the universe, which by definition applies to everything, it will be the same no matter what language you might speak, what units you might use, or even what planet you might come from.
Ao, if we ever come across aliens from another world and compare notes, we both will have the same length for the smallest length possible in the universe.

    If no coincidence, explain that:
Divide radius of visible Universe by Plank length and obtained number multiplied with Plank mass will give critical mass of the Universe.
If you put in a row Plank particles as long as visible radius of the Universe is, they will form a string heavy as whole Universe in which acoustic waves will travel at speed of light. Tension of the string to prevent colaps must be 10^54 Newton or (c^4/G) where "c" is speed of light and "G" is gravitational constant and it is formally centripetal force of a point heavy as the string, traveling at speed of light on visible Universe circumference.

I come from a non-scientific background but still am fascinated by measurements as the Planck Length. I've applied my best knowledge to this and have not, until watching your explanation, felt like I have a very good grasp of actually how small a length the Planck Lenght is. For example, recently I measured the dimensions of my room (12'X15'X9') = 45.9 Cubic meters; when 45.9 cubic meters is translated to Planck volume it amounts to 1.087239737546e+106. The calculator used tells me that "The Planck volume is a base unit of volume in the system of Planck units, equal to 4.2217 × 10⁻¹⁰⁵ m³. The Planck volume can be defined using fundamental physical constants and has the dimension of volume L³ where L - dimension of length." All of which you explained in Pt I of this video-thanks. According to your explanation, it seems that even in my own room, in one cubic meter, there are more Planck units than there are grains of sand on the Earth. (I know there are many more magnitudes smaller than this but at this point my non-scientific mind kind of took a vacation. Even if I reduced my room size to (1"X1"X1") equalling 0.0000156 cubic meters, I still arrive at this 3.695193879243e+99 Plank volume. On the other hand, if we consider that theologians tell us that in God there is no motion, since God is what is called Immutable, and Eternal, meaning there is no before or after in his Being. This means that on this level the Government of the Universe (which I call my 1"X1"X1") 0.0000156 cubic meter room has this 3.695193879243e+99 Plank volume which is governed by a BEING which is IMMUTABLE and ETERNAL, is equally fascinating to me (though not as fascinating as for someone who truly understands. Anyway, I'm interested in watching part II. Thank you and you deserve definitely a few THUMBS UP for this explanation.

The Planck length is the smallest degree of entanglement between two points within the quantum field. If the planck unit was zero, the quantum field would collapse into a single point of infinite value (or zero since a single point without a reference has no value). This unit gives rise to the constants we observe in our universe. The anthropic principle is the best explanation for why we live in a universe with the planck length we find. The many worlds interpretation would suggest that the planck length is different in other universes, and that quantum gravity is a shared force as a result of entanglement across all possibilities in the wave function. The planck length in a particular universe determines which portion of that force exists in that universe.... i.e. The strength of gravity.

The planck length determines the strength of gravity? I mean, yes indirectly, but there's no reason for the "vacuum energy" of the planck length to be what it is. In other words, the planch length-to-gravity strength ratio could have been any number, not just the one it is. So it's not exactly why gravity has it's particular strength. There really is no reason for gravity to have it's particular strength... It could have been anything.

Technically galactic superclusters are larger but they have no form or arrangement, their existence as a single entity is just a name for a big group of something. While IC 1101, as a galaxy, has form and anatomy and everything in it has something to do with the rest of it. So I agree it's the biggest "thing" discovered in the universe so far.

It always helps me visualise the scale of the universe by zooming into and out of a Mandelbrot set. However, the Mandebrot set is infinite and there is no such thing as a minimum length. Science has reached the barrier of 'simultaneity, chaos and complexity' which is the domain of the Creator. The Creator has set up the universe so that it can manipulate the outcome of every event, from the quantum to the cosmological scale, to suit its purpose, which is to evolve everything in the universe including all life and mankind. That is why there is so much conflict in all things at every level - to strengthen the evolution of whatever........ If you relentlessly follow the Guidelines of Problacism you will stay on the 'good' side of the evolution of mankind and our environment.
