  • From Season 3 of "The Dukes of Hazzard." This two-part episode helped launch the Dukes into the top tier of the network ratings. This jump scene was shot from 3 different camera angles and also used slow-motion filming. The jump is a genuine feat, and was likely a record for it's day, but was not formally claimed as such. The way they built up the emotion in this with the music and camera work really sold this scene. From the top down view of the General taking off, to the real driving scenes (instead of rear projection) to Cooter's concerned look, to the music build, and handshake at the end. This was well done. I would have used a landing ramp though :)

      Fun facts: The Dukes of Hazzard ran 147 episodes over 7 seasons and a large number of 1969 Chargers were destroyed in filming. Some sources place the figure at over 300. In the last years of the show, producers found they had created a shortage of 1969 Dodge Chargers. They used AMC Ambassadors, painted them orange and used fancy camera angles and editing techniques to try and hide the switch.

      They were known to put concrete in the trunk for ballast weight, otherwise the weight of the motor caused an imbalance during the jumps and the Chargers would tend to nosedive. If you look close on the landing, you can see the additional weight destroy the quarter panels as the weight crushed the frame rails.

      It took two attempts to do this stunt because the first time they did it, the car came up short and crashed into the pile of cars. That's why the car that takes off has a fully built roll cage in it and the car that lands doesn't. Because this was two takes cut together in editing. The car that makes the jump was the second try. As you can see, the General Lee barely cleared the stack of cars before it landed. If there was a landing ramp there, the car would have come up short and hit the ramp instead of landing flat the way it did.

      They did 2 takes of this jump . The first jump was unsuccessful. Day 2, Al Wyatt jr made the jump . There is a rare trading card picture floating around the internet of an alternate view of the first try and you can clearly see the general came up short and didn't make it past the cars

    • @digitalmagicAR
      @digitalmagicAR Před 4 lety +1

      Right. There are two photos that I know of revealing part of the outcome of the first jump: the trading card one showing the GL coming down on the cars... And another photo of it on the ground afterward with film from the side mounted camera spewed all over the place. Seems like on a jump like that they would have used a landing ramp but they never did.
      It sure would be cool to see all the footage of the stunts they didn't show on the show...the crashes and cuts etc.. Wonder if that 35mm film is still somewhere stored? I suspect it is because additional footage of the barn jump (through the roof) appeared in the 1st reunion movie previously not seen. Nowadays it's not uncommon knowledge that the cars usually got destroyed by the jumps so revealing that they used lots of cars rather than one car in the show is no longer a "secret". Back then people would argue no, they have one car and I would say just watch closely and see them buckle and collapse, if you knew what to look for. Things were harder to see on little CRT TVs with antenna reception and sometimes even B&W. We forget this was nearly 40 years ago and most of us had no way to replay or pause the show.
      Regarding the value of Dodge Chargers.... yeah they wrecked a lot of them in the show but they were not valuable cars at the time at all. Reports I've read usually range in the 200-300 cars used range but it's tricky because one of the places that supplied the cars got busted for re-using aka re-selling some of the cars to the studio before they got fired. Nonetheless the DOH show ultimately made the Charger a popular and valuable car which resulted in saving a lot more cars then they wrecked. How many of these cars across the country would have been scrapped or left abandoned rusting away if they weren't "the same kind of car as the General Lee?" :)

      The rear sometimes buckled down from the force of hitting the ramp to launch the car due to so much weight being in the trunk. You can see the rear buckle when launching on the Grannie Annie train jump and another early ep (southern comfurts?) also. And since it's already bent at that point it collapses even more when the car lands. Those jumps are brutal but the slow motion film masks the brutality
