- In 1977, an important milestone was set for the success story of Mercedes-Benz: The new van model range for 1 to 2 tons of payload came on the market and turned out to be a real bestseller. At that time, the clear vision of the designer Stefan Heiliger led to the striking lines of the pioneer. The concept of the transporter was visually taken up by an arrow shape and was able to prevail even today.

@@Chowbizfuli'd say so front looks a lot like the gwagen in my opinion sure its a bit square compared too a lot of cars but i think harder lines are making a bit of a comeback withcars like the how lancia has made a new telta and the huondai ioniqs or that tesla demo pickup sure they might not build the pickup but they designet because they see an interest in in the aestethic
The silhouette of the Van is the synonymous with family trips and vacations in India. A true, cost-effective and comfortable people mover. This design lives upto this day in India. Herr Heiliger should be proud that his design has touched so many people around the world.

I drove this with the diesel as a company car in college in the 90's. Had 700,000 kilometers on it and still had the same drivetrain and even clutch on it. It also wasn't slow on the top speed. It is superbly built. Three years later I asked a friend that still worked there about it and he said that it still hasn't needed anything other than regular maintenance, now at 850,000km.

in India this was sold by Force as the Tempo Traveller. The engine and chassis were legendary. Same story for the Matador, which also had a Benz engine
It was Bajaj Tempo when they had launched it in India. Force came years later.

I own Mercedes Benz 208D (1989, L2H1), still my favorite van off all vans that we owned during the years. Simply a van that will not let you down, it just keeps going. It has done 630 000km during the time we used it as a daily work horse, and still engine is as good as it was on day 1 we bought it, yeah rust took a toll on its looks but it has been retired for a while, still enjoy driving it around farm from time to time just to keep it in working order. My second favorite is Mercedes Sprinter 211CDI (2005, L2H2), it has done 517 000km and still going strong when called upon to do the work, but retired also.
These new Sprinters simply don't have a "soul" it's tech and lots of electronic gizmos that makes your driving experience much better, but they lack personality. Still great vans, now own 316CDI (2016 L2H2) as a daily work horse.
But those older ones are like a family members to me, by the sound they made you know what "mood" they are in, you feel connected to it and know exactly how much you can push them, and they will never let you down or leave stranded on the side of the road.
Now I treat them as monuments, they helped our business grow and will never be sold.
But would like to upgrade to an E-Sprinter once the range of EV commercial cars becomes better
When I was a little kid in the mid 90s, our local bus company got one of those and used them on my way to school several times a week. I remember that sitting in this minibus was an absolute treat compared to all other buses that were running around. I lovedthe "efficient" form factor made an impression on me, just like the high quality of the interior, and oh, the beautiful driver's dashboard. I was always looking forward to getting to school in this.

I had one of these vans back in the early 2000's and it was old then. It would always start even if I hadn't driven it in ages. It was a great van.

I also had two for my job as a plant mechanic in the 80s/90s you are right they were the best van ever made, a solid front beam axle with king pins and a leaf spring at each corner, built like a truck also comfortable, I had a 308d then a 310d, I loved them and now I have an old 208d autotrail campervan which has a turbo, good luck in finding a campervan.
I would never changed this model with new models. Best engine ever.
We need more parts for T1N becouse tere are great vans and the built quality is great very reliable car!!!

best van in this era! strong engines, suspension and gearing system. i my opinion very underrated these days.. but i know these well. the sprinter 1gen is also a hit. i like these videos. on one day its priceless to have. the person itself side by side. love it
even tho merc did not make it in india the force vans over here were still so incredible. brings me many memories especially when i see one today, even if its the new generation.

Popular in India even today as Force Traveller. Various wheelbases are sold as Staff van, delivery van, ambulance, school van and police van.

Отсутствие на фиг ненужных электронных "помошников", рессорная подвеска, а поворот передних колёс на 54 градуса позволяет парковать в очень маленькие места. OM 602.940 очень бодро таскает длиннобазный с высокой крышей бус и прицеп.
Спринтер, это пластмассовый ширпотреб по сравнению с Т1.
Увидеть создателя и сказать ему спасибо было давней мечтой, дядечке и другим создателям всех благ.
310D автобус со мной с 2005 года, расставаться не собираемся.
Огромное спасибо. Этому человеку, что создал совершенство. Посей день живут. У меня их две и люблю их. Всегда вспоминаю добрым словом о его создателе. Что прост в ремонте и живучие авто.

Vielleicht der beste Transporter, den Mercedes verkauft hat. Der Ruf des 207 D und 307 D in der Welt ist Legendär. Ein Wagen der ewig läuft. Er braucht tatsächlich nur normale Pflege...man kann vieles noch selbst machen.

Też takim jeździłem 208. W 97r zaczynając karierę kierowcy, 😀 auto niezawodne. Wtedy tych kaczek było jeszcze dużo na drogach. To takie w124 w dostawczaku. Bardzo dobry i nie zawodny sprzęt

Moja młodość upłynęła mi w takim mesiu ojciec miał takiego i prowadził firmę transportową objechałem nim całą Europę w latach 90 to była dobra maszyna wolna i hałaśliwa ale solidna! Tylko kilka razy nie dojechał do domku o własnych siłach na 700 000 km to naprawdę niewiele. Potem przesiadłem się na VW LT ale to już nie było to samo. 👋😉

We used to have one but it was the 409D model, year 1983, equipped with 5cylinder 300d engine and a big body. My dad and I drove it for 13 years and it never let us down even in the worst roads and overweight!

Ich liebe den T1, fahre ihn auch heute noch als TSF einer freiwilligen Feuerwehr - mit 30 Jahren auf dem roten Buckel. Der MB T1 zählt für mich genau wie der VW T2 der achtziger Jahre zu den Ikonen des Nutzfahrzeugbaus!

Weiß noch ganz genau als ich nach dem Gottesdienst an meiner Kommunion mit so einem nach Hause gefahren bin. Mein Vater hatte den von der Firma aus fahren dürfen, da er zu dem Zeitpunkt kein privates Auto hatte. Auch unzählige Umzüge haben wir mit dem Auto hinter uns gebracht. War immer ein wahnsinniges Erlebnis.

Mein Vater hat einen 207d, der mittlerweile etwa 600.000 Kilometer Straße erlebt hat. Und es ist der beste Bus überhaupt!
Ich meine damit nicht den Bremer an sich, sondern speziell unseren. Er ist bei weitem kein Museumsstück, sondern man sieht ihm sein Alter und seine verschiedenen Vorgeschichten an. Von Transport exotischer Pflanzen über Baustellen bis zum Übernachten in verschiedenen Ländern war alles dabei.
Ich bestreite mittlerweile meinen Master in Fahrzeugtechnik und ich weiß nicht, ob ich diesen Weg ohne diese Faszination als Kind für Technik gewählt hätte, wenn mich nicht dieses Fahrzeug damals so gefesselt hätte. Ich hoffe ich werde noch einmal verstehen, wie man so viel menschliche Persönlichkeit in 2 Tonnen Stahl und Kunststoff verbauen kann.

Nach meinem Abitur hatte ich kurzfristig für ein Pharmaunternehmen gejobbt und Ware ausgefahren. Mit einem Transporter dieser Baureihe. Ein hervorragendes Fahrzeug. Der Designer Stefan Heiliger hat Recht. Er kann stolz auf diese Lebensleistung sein.
Viele Jahre später hatte ich dann den großen Bruder, einen D 711, selbst besessen und dieses 6,6 Tonnen Fahrzeug zum Wohnmobil umbauen lassen. 4 Liter Maschine mit 105 PS. Ebenfalls ein hervorragendes Fahrzeug. Beides Automobile, die den Stern verdient getragen haben.

Mein Vater war einer von vielen aber dennoch einer von denen, der diese Rifi Transporters von Deutschland nach Marokko brachte. Wir hatten selbst Jahre lang mehrere von diesen starken Lastesel. ❤In allen Motorisierungen, Farben und Varianten. Ich kann mit Stolz sagen, dass mein Vater dazu beigetragen, dass in ländlichen Gebieten in Marokko, die Mobilität damit ernom erleichtert hat. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼Ein Hoch auf den deutschen Lastesel...

Mitte der 2000er hatten wir so ein Ding beim Roten Kreuz. "Schnelltransporter" mit 50 oder 60 PS (weiß nicht mehr genau) 207er Diesel (2 Liter Hubraum). Sechs Mann Besatzung, und hinten alles reingeschmissen was man brauchte. Feldbetten, Großzelt, medizinisches und technisches Equipment, eine große Leiter... Dazu noch ein cW-Wert wie ein Kühlschrank. Aber immerhin mit einigen "Erleichterungsbohrungen" (Rost), wo man vom Fahrerplatz aus die Straße durch den Boden sehen konnte. Mit Mühe und Not mit Blaulicht im Konvoi mit 30 Km/h auf die Autobahn auffahren war echt ein Erlebnis. Achja, kaum Heizwirkung im Winter (kleiner Motor), und natürlich keine Klimaanlage.
Der andere Ortskreis hatte den gleichen Wagen, aber mit Feldküchen-Anhänger. Die waren sogar noch langsamer als wir.
Kann mich noch dran erinnern wie wir offen angefeindet worden sind von anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern. Aber was sollte man groß machen?
Man war zwar langsam wie eine Wanderdüne, aber man kam immer an, obwohl der Wagen zu der Zeit (nach über 20 Jahren im harten Einsatz) es eigentlich bereits hinter sich hatte.
Da konnte man auch noch alles in den Tank reinkippen was irgendwie ölig war. Der fuhr auch mit altem Frittenfett oder Speiseöl. Man musste nur entsprechend den Kraftstofffilter ab und an reinigen, was nicht gerade angenehm gerochen hat.
Das Fahrwerk und die Lenkung fühlten sich schon bei 50 km/h (wenn man denn solche utopischen Geschwindigkeiten bergab mit Rückenwind erreichen konnte) extrem nudelig an, was aber auch am allgemeinen Wartungszustand gelegen haben könnte. Dessen bin ich mir nicht sicher. Geräuschkulisse war auch einmalig. Wirklich ALLES war am rattern und knallen.
Der lief noch bis Ende der 2000er, ehe der Wagen von einem Sprinter (glaube ich) ersetzt wurde. Bei eBay-Kleinanzeigen hat den der Ortsleiter mit folgendem Text eingestellt:
"Gutte auto, mit gutte Motor, aber ein bisshen kapot. Wrumm, wrumm."
In Albania T1 is still alive but none uses anymore. Just restore this cars and keep them . And we albanians take good care of every Mercedes vehicle and we are very obsessed with this cars. Never dies this models. Thank you Germany 🇩🇪 Mercedes Benz forever ❤

In India when diesel was subsidized, these things were cheap as chips to run. They were built under license and were all over the place. what a timeless elegant design.
The Tempo Travellers in India still continue this timeless design!

This paved the way for the larger T2 which in later years morphed into the Vario, the best chassis to be ever used for building 24-33 seater buses.
Such a reliable motor, you could throw them anywhere. A pleasure to drive, these Atego built buses don’t hold a candle to the Vario. They’re far too big.
Mercedes should never have ceased the production of the Vario, I’m sure there would’ve been a way to produce it with cleaner emissions
