Growing up in the sticks of Maine in the 60s & 70s, one didn't have many choices when it came to listening to music. In 71 or 72 lying in my bed, one night, this song unlike any that I had ever heard, came on the radio. Whether it was WPTR out of Albany NY, or more likely WKBW out of Buffalo, I no longer remember. But I am lying in bed when a song like nothing I had ever heard comes on, and then the poem at the end. I thought that I had found heaven in music. All these years later, this LP still ranks as one of my all-time favorites.

Love this original version of the album, the one I grew up listening to. The CD version has a different stereo mix than the original vinyl release. The recent 50th anniversary edition of this album has the original stereo mix presented here as bonus tracks, but the tapes appear to be so damaged that the sound quality is questionable. The best way to hear the original mix is on an original 1967 vinyl release like this - thanks for the upload!

Phil plays with The Moody Blues and they tell us the "Days of Future Passed".
"Days of Future Passed" is the second album and the first concept album by English prog rock band "The Moody Blues".
It was released on 10 November 1967 by Deram Records and included the later hit single "Nights In White Satin".
It is one of the first in rock history with its fusion of orchestral and rock elements that is considered a precursor to early psychedelic and progressive rock.
The album was recorded at a time when The Moody Blues were suffering from financial difficulties and a lack of critical and commercial success.
After two less than successful years as a rhythm-and-blues band, founding members Clint Warwick left and Rod Clark came in his place. Shortly after, Denny Laine left The Moody Blues.
Laine and Clark were replaced by Justin Hayward and John Lodge.
Then came what Hayward calls "a series of wonderful happenstances". Their label, Decca Records, wanted to recover the money it had loaned The Moody Blues and at the same time promote the then new stereo recording equipment that produced what they called the "Deramic Sound".
Decca was already a hit with classical listeners and hoped that stereo would also go down well with rock musicians.
"Up to that point, of course, most albums were just in glorious mono," bassist John Lodge said in an interview. "Later on we actually had to go back into the studio and mix it in mono because so many people wanted it in mono. They didn't have stereo players at that time."
Decca suggested mixing classical and rock ideas, hoping to appeal to both audiences. The obligation by Decca Records to record an adaptation of Antonín Dvořák's 9th Symphony was just not met by the band and their producer. Instead, they recorded their own material with conductor Peter Knight and the London Festival Orchestra.
"They wanted us to do a demonstration recording of a rock version of Dvorak's 9th Symphony, with conductor Peter Knight playing the real Dvorak between our pieces and a technician mixing them together so people would say, 'Oh, that sounds wonderful in stereo'," Hayward wrote on The Moody Blues' official website in 2012.
Producer "Michael Barclay, whose project it was to get these demo records together, suggested we do it the other way round: We'd do our songs and then Peter Knight would orchestrate the bits in between our songs, and that's how we did it."
It was a stroke of genius - or rather, an accidental stroke of genius. Through sheer force of will, the Moody Blues created the perfect vehicle for a groundbreaking combination.
To Decca Records: "We said, yeah, sure we'll do it," Hayward told the Los Angeles Times, "and then after we said yes, we went to the pub and decided to do our own songs instead."
The album was only a moderate success when it was released, but after constant radio airplay, especially the hit single "Nights in White Satin", it became a top ten hit in the US in 1972. It has since been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the most important albums of 1967.
After several LP editions, the album was released on CD for the first time in 1986. Later remastered versions sometimes included alternative versions as bonus tracks.
Thank you 🙏 dear Phil for this remarkable highly audiophile presentation of The Moody Blues classic.

In my view, and the view of many, the big hit off this album was Tuesday Afternoon; certainly that was the case in the late sixties. It's also why I bought the album. ;)
Nonetheless, it's a great album; I enjoyed it the first time I listened. From there, it got better and better. :)

These UK Decca pressings have such a wonderful midrange warmth. It's a shame that most people don't get to hear this record sound this good. Those US pressings just don't even come close. Now they can! Spot on.

@@AudioPhil1 there are some US copies that do a better job than others. The Gilbert Kong mastering is a great attempt but nothing beats the UK. I have a Dutch copy that I really like too. The midrange saturation of the UK is toned down and there is a bit more top end life. It's not better, but different. Nights in White Satin really soars on that copy. Truly 3D.

Im from the US and we never got anything like this. I love this album, but the drums on my US copy just sound muffled and flat. The classical instrumentals sound good and the vocals, ok. I'm looking on saving up for a UK copy. But for now i'm happy with my copy! My setup is new and works just fine with other records, but my copy seems to have tape dropouts on side 1 (tracks 3,4) And has pretty much no high-end. But it was 3 bucks in VG+ condition, I can't complain!
