    If the reel doesn’t have a hook to use with a loop of chord, just attach the middle to the reel with a big zip tie. It works great.

    My reel has a hook on it already and I was having trouble getting it wound up on the reel, but when I saw what you did, I found the middle of the cord and hooked it on to the hook and was able to wind the two halves of the cord around and reel and came up with the two plug ends like you did with the knob that you glued onto your reel. Same concept! Works great!! Thank you!

    Brilliant idea. I have used my reel so many times and it has never occurred to me to try something like this. Thanks for the video.

    Be cautious when not using all of the cord with heavy electrical load as the coil will heat up.

      Good call! Always best when using cords for power tools to unwind entire length.

    I’m going to always wrap my cord this way. Wtf. Why did I not look this shit up before. I knew there had to be an easier, faster way. THIS is the answer

    Brilliant idea. It can cause problems (esp on higher current drawing devices) to only partially unwind the extension cord. At worse it can cause a fire due to extension cord heating up (a bit like a jug element).

      Indeed, Paul. As you know anything is theoretically possible. Consider the zillions of wall-mounted and hanging spring-powered cord reels that every serious shop has and have been around forever. No prob!

      I did have an extension cord catch fire once. but it wasn't because it was coiled up. It was because the cord was old and in bad condition and developed a short. Normally that would trip a 15 or 20 amp breaker but we were doing a remodel and the only breaker we had access to was a 100 amp main because the breakout panel had already been removed. So there we were in a pitch black attic and our light bulb popped and after a few seconds we saw a glowing orange spiral stretching across that attic. We didn't make it to the breaker before the cord burst into flame at the point where the short was.

      @Roger-qm4zh Před 8 lety +1

      But he is correct about problems caused by only partially unrolling a cord. I don't understand exactly but it causes the cord to be able to carry less amperage. In effect a #12 cord becomes #15 etc. One of the first cord reels I owned "back in the day" actually had a table molded into it that showed this derating.

      Great, David! I really appreciate a guy who thinks of better ways to do things. Could you share exactly how you solved this problem with your own reels ten years ago? I'm the inventor (and patent holder) of the Reel-It-In and, I too, rigged my reels, in a rather crude but concept-proving manner, several years ago. I loved the results so much that I just had to develop the concept into a patentable reality.

      Easy, duct tape and it's almost free and easily taken off. Have the original reel and tape still.

      I use my Sharpie to write on each connector end the length in feet and the wire gauge. I'll go mark the middle tomorrow...

    • @ob1coyote
      @ob1coyote Před 8 lety

      We started wrapping the middle with a bit of gaffer's tape. That added the ability to feel the middle and/or see it at a quick glance (our cords were striped black and orange). We also postulated that MAYBE that would add a little resistance to bending/breaking of the cord internals at that point because the middle of the cord was where the cord was most sharply bent the most...

    This is a great idea. (Yep, one of those: "Why didn't I think of that?" ones!) I bet it will last longer than the reel however! Mine break after a few years. But for 5 bucks - not bad. (Unless you sell additional adhesive lining?)

  • @gnormhurst
    @gnormhurst Před 5 lety +3

    Nice. But if you wind it starting with the female end nearest the hub, when you use it you can plug the loose male end into the outlet, then unspool up to where you need power, leaving the rest on the reel, and plug your tool into the female connector sticking out from the hub. I realize this doesn't work if you need both ends free, but usually my tool has a pretty long power cord.

  • @triffidgrower
    @triffidgrower Před 7 měsíci

    I wind the male plug into the centre of the reel so that anyone who uses my lead has to unwind the full length, thus reducing the risk of coiled flex overheating. You've got a reel to wind it up, be lazy at your own risk.

  • @noconz0727

    Why would you have to unwind the entire cord on the original design?

    • @FastCapLLC
      @FastCapLLC  Před 7 lety +1

      If you need the cord length at both ends; to use the entire cord.

    • @noconz0727

      0:27 - "Every time you wanna use it, you gotta unwind this entire cord."
      Why not just unwind how much you need?

    Mother#@%&#$!!!! I just purchased that $17.00 split donut thing for extension cords. Today is Aug 15, 2017... I just got the email, but this was uploaded to CZcams over two months ago.
    The video perfectly demonstrates the flaw in the Orange Wheel Product. Hard to believe people are posting questions not seeing the value of this product.
    Sometimes you only need to unwind a little bit of cord, but you also want the ends protected when in storage. Not all of us have super large vehicles with unlimited storage room. The cord reel gets jammed into the van, and often takes a beating.
    Thanks, NOT....for the late email.
