I certainly get why the filmmakers gave eohippus hoofbeats as he walks, but as a 'dawn horse' , each leg would have had three toes. So cute! I saw this in the theater when the film came out in the 60's.
Can we all just acknowledge how insanely real this thing looks. It looks more real than even modern CGI, just shows that stop motion ages even better than most CGI, absolutely breathtaking work by the legend that was Rey Harryhausen.
Its amazing Ray is à genius it is really amazing practical effect I agree it is à monument of cinema and creativity but it is not more realistic than cgi it looks fake it look like exactly What it is à dolls made with fake fur like and moved in stop motion it is less fluid less realistic thans cgi
As a stop motion animator myself although small and not as Skilled as Ray I agree with your statement and the manner of stop motion is absolutely beautiful there is so much heart and soul put into it and not only can so give it tons of personality and realism that is lost when developing CGI they stay within the "realistic medium" and they lose the creativity with it I'm not saying CGI is inferior to stop motion but I'm saying CGI has been losing it's purpose in recent years but it still has a charm to it one that stop motion once had before the era of CGI
I saw the ACTUAL MODEL at an exhibition (2021) of Ray Harryhausen's creations in Edinburgh Modern Art Gallery. Such craftsmanship, such detail. Harryhausen was a Titan and this little creation was perfect.
Some fun facts: I believe Valley was loosely based on a 1950s unused idea. VALLEY OF THE MIST was another Willis O'Brien project that put humanity in contact with dinosaurs . This time , a boy hunts down a giant lizard in a hidden valley . He intends to trade it for his prized bull , which has been sold by his father . Originally titled Emilio and Guloso , then El Toro Estrella ( The Star Bull ) , screenwriter William " Bill " Lasky created a new screenplay from O'Brien's treatment and gave it a new title : Valley of the Mist . Bill hoped to get his father , the legendary Jesse L. Lasky , founder of Paramount Pictures , to green - light the picture . The film was to have been shot in Mexico , in full Technicolor . However , no studio would agree to finance a movie that involved so much special effects animation after the perceived overspend on Mighty Joe Young . This was a film that Ray would undoubtedly have worked on had it gone ahead.
Ray Harryhausen....nice...Talos, Hydra, Skeleton army from Jason and the Argonauts, Griffin, Centaur and Kali statue from Golden Voyage of Sindabad, Medusa, Vulture, Dioskylos which was basically a dog like Orthrus and Kraken from clash of the Titans, Poseidon from Jason. Allosaurus from 10,000 B.C and this movie... dinosaurs from other movies. Great work.
