I recently watched this movie for the first time and it's now a favourite. When I'm having a bad day I sometimes just watch the ending a few times, the expression on Grant's face is heart achingly done.

lol A Bishop's Wife is my favorite Christmas movie! David Niven is just so awkwardly charming as he sneaks into this movie and steals every scene he's in, even with Grant! But yes, to each their own! This was a fantastic review, as usual!

Dunne and Grant also starred in another Christmas-themed movie: “Penny Serenade.” It’s a real hankie wringer of a movie and really showcases both Dunne & Grant’s dramatic chops. Co-stars Edgar Buchanan and Beulah Bondi.
The little boy on shipboard in Love Affair later played Grant/Dunne’s son in My Favorite Wife.

    Hi friend!
I have never seen this before.
You said it is a remake....kind if like Cecil B DeMille did a remake of The Ten Commands. The most known is probably 1956 movie but he had earlier directed a silent movie version first from 1923. Wow. Next year it will be 100!
Nothing wrong of showing emotion. I am a highly sensitive person and I have no shame crying...especially when it is deep stuff like...life.
Thanks for your prayers for my dad. So far he is doing okay with his treatment but tired..
If I don't see another video from you again..Merry Christmas!
I really don't have anything to comment on this movie as I haven't seen it but then again, hearing and watching a review is exactly what one would do to learn about movies and see if there is am interest there!
    Your reviews brighten my day!

Yes, the other big examples of a director remaking his own movie that I always think of are DeMille with The Ten Commandments and Hitchcock with The Man Who Knew Too Much. (I was actually going to mention this in the video but ended up cutting it.) Interesting that all three remakes came out around the same time...

Always great to check out your reviews! I've never seen this movie but anything Cary Grant was in is bound to be good. He did a comedy called "Walk, Don't Run" which was a comedy set during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, I believe. CZcams had a copy of it but with the image flipped. I realized this early on when Cary Grant walks into the British Embassy and the sign over the door is backwards. If I saw an important sign like that over a door that I was about to enter, I might wonder if I was being tricked like they ued to do on Candid Camera.

Good review. I ended up rewatching the film itself for the Christmas season because of your review. One of the best parts of the film was the eponymous theme tune sung by Vic Damone in the opening.
Did you know that Ingrid Bergman was considered for the female lead before that role was given to Deborah Kerr?
And I’m gonna disagree with you on The Bishop’s Wife (1947), which is actually one of my favorite Christmas movies. I don’t know why, but Cary Grant had a certain charm playing the guardian angel in that film.

A great review. This lead me to go and watch Love Affair (1939). I think 1939 communicates the story better than 1957. Plus, as I think you allude to, there is something to these earlier movies from the 30s and 40s; they have a touching feel. I felt this with The 39 Steps (1935), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, etc.

An awesome review. Very insightful. I just watched the movie yesterday for the first time. The hosts on TCM (I recorded the movie on DVR on New Years eve) said that the director made the remake because his career was in a slump and he needed another hit so he went back and remade his earlier success. The movie made me feel powerful feelings of romance. You said Christmas is about redemption, does that mean you’re a Christian ? Anyway I hope to see my ex Tina in the Philippines soon if God wills and this movie inspired me that things may go well if I see her again. ❤ please review more romantic comedies . How about my favorite, As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson. Please also review the Nicholas Sparks movies like The Notebook which are very romantic . I’m happy u also like Godzilla

replies to a fellow commentor gave me the inclination that this was in the works. So,it was time for me to move on to 1957.

Deborah Kerr with her magnificent facial expressions.I like them very much. The same story is told with an extra 28 minutes.

@@earthcreature5824 I'm sorry to hear that. I believe that CZcams has been testing a stricter filtration system, but I haven't been using it. It seems more likely that your comments/replies are getting stuck in comment limbo along with other peoples' comments/replies, including some of my own. I don't know what the deal is with that, and I wish they'd get their act together because I know how frustrating or disappointing it can be to type out a whole thing only to have it disappear. I will say that your comments often end up in my "held for review" tab awaiting my approval. I think it's because if there's a space missing between a period and the first word of the next sentence, the filter interprets that as a link, and links always get flagged for review. But when that happens, the comment should still show up on your end, not disappear completely. So I don't know what's changed. :/

I did see all of Penny Serenade, which someone below mentioned. Grant in that seems kind of unemotional and non-charming, I dunno. This was a very well constructed review, I enjoyed your take. I can see what you mean about Grant not being so charming in Penny Serenade. It's a change of pace from the more comedic roles he was playing around that time, and I think the re-teaming of Grant and Dunne could misdirect the viewer into expecting another screwball flick. I enjoyed the film, though.

Re movie 'A Night to Remember'; there was a picture with that title, released in 1943, starring Loretta Young and Brian Aherne. It was a murder mystery, set in New York City, a contemporary setting. The irony is that Brian Aherne played Edward Smith, the captain of the liner Titanic, in the 1953 American movie "Titanic'. I didn't feel that he was a good choice: apart from being much taller than the real Captain Smith, Aherne just didn't project an aura of authority, of a man capable of commanding an ocean liner.

The 1939 “Love Affair” is has been free on CZcams for 10 years (wish I’d known!) on the PizzaFlix channel. Richard Denning sans rolled up sleeves. A great loss. He pays for her wardrobe. She’s a wife in training and he’s obviously wealthy but won’t everyone in NYC know she was “kept” if only from the store staff (remember “The Women” 1939).
The second version’s grandmother was played by Cathleen Nesbitt who played Hayley Mills’ grandmother in “The Parent Trap.”
Her wardrobe is a dream for a redhead too. But I do really really love “The Grass is Greener.” Robert Mitchum!
I actually prefer “Love Affair.” Boyer is actually French, Maria Ouspenskaya is better I think. (Loved her in “Dodsworth.” “Have you considered my dear how little happiness there is for the older wife of a young man?”)
Old version-“pink champagne”? “Champagne cocktail please” which is champagne with a sugar cube.
I have to say, I prefer the first “Love Affair.” Dunne is just more naturally witty.
Best lines: “You’re very lovely girls, but you have very bad manners.”
“Do you ever think it’ll take the place of baseball?” “My mother always told me not to enter any man’s cabin in a month ending in R.”
Interesting too that both women had natural red hair.

Nora Ephron is wrong - guys can get this movie. I like this one a lot. Cary Grant is probably my favorite actor, so I'm natural drawn to this version. I've never seen Love Affair, aand I would only compare everything in it to this one because of that. Also, I've seen this several times - we're often swayed by things we've seen first. I also like Sleepless in Seattle quite a bit. That stars another one of my favorite actors - Tom Hanks. After watching your review on Monday, I decided to watch this movie again. I had your review in mind and I don't think this is a Christmas movie. That's fine if you, and other people, think it is. I don't get offended by people saying that Die Hard is a Christmas movie either. I personally don't think so, but everyone's entitled to their opinion. In this movie, I don't really see many references to Christmas except that he's giving her a present. By the way, Grant was NEVER given enough credit for his acting. Sure, he plays a similar character often, but he's just so darn likeable and good as that character. I never thought that in the final scene that Grant was rude or anything like that. Glad you changed your mind, I agree with your new assessment of the situation.

    • @JeromeWeiselberry

For whatever it's worth, I did see this movie long before I saw Love Affair. I saw An Affair to Remember several times as a kid and then saw Love Affair several times as an adult. I just can't remember if I saw Sleepless in Seattle before or after An Affair to Remember, but we had the tape kicking around, so I was at least familiar enough with the title to recognize the reference.
In a tongue-in-cheek way, I always joke that any scene featuring Christmassy elements instantly transforms the movie into a Christmas movie. In all seriousness, I probably wouldn't include this on a Christmas list. But I wanted to squeeze the review in before the end of the year, and since this is December and the movie ends with Christmas, it worked out nicely.

@@JeromeWeiselberry Yeah, I did say "often swayed". It's like that in music for me. Many times, it's the albums or songs that hear by somebody that you like best. Definitely not always, as in movies as well as music. You know, I may have seen Sleepless in Seattle first too. I can't remember. I have liked Grant for awhile now, but have really dug in deeper in the last 10-15 years. I started out with the Hitchcock/Grant pairings first and then I moved to other things eventually. Screwball comedies and such. Romantic movies aren't always my first choice. Shame you don't like Bishop's Wife more. I like it enough to watch every year. Not sure about his character being too perfect. He's definitely hitting on a married woman... to the guy he's supposed to helping. Pretty rude in my book. Also, I forgot to say the first time that your definition of "controversial" is pretty funny. You know, if the most controversial thing in the world was you thinking that Love Affair is better than Affair to remember because Cary Grant is rude to his love, then the world would be a much better place to live in. I waiting for you to review Suspicion in your Hitchcock reviews. His character's a lot worse than that. So is the movie, by the way.

I like An Affair to Remember a lot but I also prefer the original, I think the 39 film is a lot better. I feel Leo McCarey went a bit overboard with the awkward humour in the remake where the original had a more authentic feel, I thought the situations our leads were placed in were more realistic, scenes like the one during dinner where the other diners couldn’t help but stare forcing our couple to make their exit as opposed to the remake where the diners were laughing out loud at Grant and Kerrs characters, another scene I noticed a big difference was when our lead’s received their telegrams, in the original Boyer and Dunne open their telegrams and read them without any added drama, we can read the slight feeling of guilt and awkwardness on their faces, on the other hand Grant and Kerr have a strange interaction where the turn away from each other like spies from different sides of a Cold War holding information from one another. I’m a big fan of both Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr but in my opinion Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne did a much better job in the roles, more subtle, I even think McCarey made better choices in editing and direction for Love Affair, first kiss, even the interaction with the child on deck, I do prefer the scenes with Janou in An Affair to Remember, Cathleen Nesbitt gave a great and emotional performance, Oh another thing I like more in Love Affair is how the Chapel scene was shot with the light coming through the window onto Dunne creating a beautiful and almost angelic silhouette. sleeves down Denning was such an understanding guy, his character must’ve loved Terry with all his soul, her happiness is all that mattered to him and although he was obviously heartbroken he couldn’t hide the pleasure he found just seeing her happy or excited, the sleeves ruined everything for the poor fella lol. Although I like Love Affair more I do love An Affair to Remember also, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr have so much chemistry and charisma and Grant plays the realisation so well it’s hard not to shed a tear.
Off topic, I’ve managed to read Anne of the Island & Anne of Windy Poplars ( really enjoyable ) and have watched both Anne of Green Gables 1934 and Anne of Windy Poplars 1940, I really liked them also, great Christmas viewing.
Weiselberry’s log, viewdate June 2017, Kelly’s Heroes. The amount of time and work you must’ve put into your film and book spreadsheets is mind boggling, so impressive and they will no doubt be useful for those of us searching for something interesting to watch or read.
Merry Christmas to you and yours and Happy Holidays, hope you’re not bogged down with editing or filming and you have a nice and relaxing Christmas. Maybe I should’ve waited until the next video to say Merry Christmas 🤔 I’ll just say it again if you post another. Another Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to those who may read this.

I'm really happy that this review has inspired some people to look into the original 1939 film as well. You make excellent observations regarding little nuances and the differences in editing, lighting, etc. between the two versions. It's these seemingly minor things that can make a huge difference in how a scene plays out...
Hey, you did it! Nice. Good timing too, at least for the Santa scene. I'm glad you enjoyed all of that. :)
Oh, I hope you find the spreadsheets useful! I used it the other day when my mom was telling my uncle about the movie we watched with Bo Hopkins on a barge. Neither of us could remember the title, so I did a search for "Hopkins" and found it in two seconds (The Runaway Barge). I think it might be even better if I add more words in the tag column, but at the same time I don't want it to get too detailed, so we'll see how that goes.
Thank you, and merry Christmas to you too! And if you end up saying it again on tomorrow's video, I guess that'll be okay. :)

,, your voice, amongst many things I can't ever refrain from, after watching the documentary partially edited by , Michael Wadleigh, Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese, Yeu-Bun Yee etc of the 3days of love & peace,, Woodstock (1970) and featuring, among many,, Joan Baez, always makes me think if you were brought up on Staten Island or near the village of Bethel, NY ✨🕊️🤍 , you quite often also make me desire to be more with people of the 70s to the 90s and their nature than the misfortunes of the UK folk that after seeing their disenfranchisement during the boom years have then become the celebrated national treasures with their hatred disinterest and blank conformity,,
I once luckily spent the latter warm terms of middle school plaiting daisy chains, discoursing life's reasonings with intelligent brunettes, who seem to have evaporated ✨🤗🌼
,, I too feel, although , an affair to remember 🚢 also has its own stand up greatness 🌇 it's many flaws are not featured in the original of , Love Affair (1939) ,, the theme tune, overly repeated being one ✨🥂🍾💞 Merry Christmas, Jerome ✨🎄
    ,, you're the closest thing to heaven ✨🕊️🤍🤍🤍💐💋 x
