How to Prep Belts for Tooling

  • In this latest short video, I show you how to prep belts for tooling. When tooling belts, they will usually want to stretch some because of the stamping process. This is the method that I use on virtually all the belts that I make to help prevent this.
    Many leatherheads will use a heavy packing tape on the back of the belt blank and then remove it when the tooling is completed. I find the tape a bit hard to deal with so I use poster board strips in my belts. I find the added body that it gives my finished belts a nice plus.
    This is a short video just to show you how I prep my belts for tooling and should clear up some of the questions that I get concerning this important step. Thanks so much for checking it out and I hope it offers value in your shop!

    *Don Gonzales* I was nursing a couple of things I just wanted to compliment you on. Grape video, clear instructions and I also notice that you answer people's questions. Double thumbs up to that. Especially since I might have one later. Thanks for the video.☮

      Oh my goodness. I had to use text to talk and apparently my phone can't understand my hillbilly accent. Lol 😉 I'm not in nursing. I mean I was a medical assistant but that doesn't have anything to do with my comment. And your video isn't GRAPE.🤦🏻‍♀️🤪🤭 Obviously I meant that your video is great. Couple with the removal of the nursing and it makes better sense. How embarrassing. Anyways, thanks so much.🙃🙂☮

    On several belts I basket stamped distorted badly and ruined the project, I tried blue painters tape also and helped out some, I'll definitely try the gluing paper thing on my next one and hopefully it'll work for me also

    Looking to do an inlay of beads on a leather belt. Can you do a video on this or answer how this is done? Ive seen stitching around the inlay.

    Since I usually don't line my belts I apply two or three coats of Resolene to the flesh side (before any tooling). Seems to work.
    Thanks for sharing your expertise!

    Great videos! Do you use a splitter to make sure the leather is the same thickness all the way down?

    Really quick question. When you get ready to stitch what type of material do you sew to the rough side? I read below pig skin but wasn't sure

    WTG Don. the white paper that you use looks thinner and lighter than poster board. at least what I call poster board. can you give me some more info like thickness, where you buy it.

  • @jesuschrististheredpill9121

    Love these videos bro. One question....what is the surface of your tabletop? I've never seen anything like that. Can you buy that material?

      Vans Custom Leather thanks so much man! That is my glue table and it is cardboard with years of excess glue dried to it... don't worry it doesn't take long to get yourself a good layer on there from glueing projects together! Lol! Thanks again!

    HI Don if you got the time i would really appreciate if you would give some suggestions ...
    i buy my leather products from a leather shop owned from an old shoemaker who never used those products, i really trust your judgment thats why i ask you so much...
    i use fiebings antic and fiebings stain, but lets say i wanna dye the belt with only fiebings oil dye
    do you think should i first slick the edges from my belt with the edge gum and than with the fiebings oil dye?
    or vice versa? i also have some edge kote shell i apply the edge kote too on the end or before the gum?
    I am really sorry to ask you all this questions but i wanna make this belt before Christmas..in a good way.
    Thank you again for your time. ( :

    HI Don, one quick question the paper you glued on the back to improve stiffness, is only for belts with 2 face of leather i mean the belt, the poster board and another piece of soft leather? or do you leave the poster board always on your belts even on the one with no leather on the inside?
    I watched your belt on your web side they are Beautiful the job is Superb!
    Sorry if I sometimes cant explain myself clearly, I hope you understand. ( :

    Hello don I wanted to ask you when you put another piece of leather do you just sew them together or do you glues them first before stitching them? Love all your videos and all your pattern packs.

      Mariano Garcia thanks so much! Yes I glue them together before sewing. Usually one coat on each piece is enough.

    Don, what ounce leather do you use on the back of your belt? I thought it was a 2-3 ounce but I can’t find any 2-3 ounce long enough for a belt. I’m making my first belt and having a hard time finding that. I just got some in today but it’s about a foot short.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher Před 5 lety

      If I plan on lining a belt I make the belt out of 7-8 oz and for the liner 3-4 oz. After tooling the belt will be thinner like 6 oz so l end up with 10 more or less, but I don't use contact cement I use gorilla glue and then I don't have to sew the liner on. Problem with gorilla glue is it foams when it dries and I have to sand it off, which doesn't take very long on my disk sander. You can order utility grade shoulders of veg tan in 4 oz at Weaver Leather Supply which is more than long enough to cut some belts out of.

    Don, you said you leave the cardboard on after tooling? Then when you finish the belt, how do you finish over the cardboard? I guess the cardboard holds up well and does not wear out quickly?

    • @RobPolson
      @RobPolson Před 7 lety +1

      neilyeag he will line it with pigskin or some other thin leather, covering up the paper.

    Don, I am a complete rookie.. what exactly is the purpose of the poster board?

    • @DonGonzalesMaker
      @DonGonzalesMaker  Před 7 lety +1

      The poster board helps prevent stretch during the tooling and adds body to the finished belt... They won't stretch as bad with use.

    • @mattbarnett6632

      Joseph Wolf yessir. The poster board will stay in the middle between the two layers of leather.

      tanner marcos So it’s been 4 months since you bought the glue pot. Have you been tooling much? Was it costly to get into? Did you find it super difficult to get started and learn the basics? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for any info.

    Hey man, question please,,,, I guess you know by my stupid questions that I’ve only been doing this for about 9-months or so lol 😝 I wanted to ask if you can just use masking tape instead of gluing the cardboard? That’s what I was once told. I know everyone has their own opinions and versions of doing things, but I wanna know what you think as I admire you immensely. Thanks soooooo very very much Don. It’s greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely;
    Mark.

      Thanks so much for the support and for the kind words! Absolutely u can use tape... I recommend the blue painters tape... much easier to remove after tooling. I also use it occasionally on my belts recently.

    how on earth does a thin piece of paper add any strength or stop it stretching? really?
