Gooney Bird Mask Attempt #2- Rock-afire Explosion- Showbiz Pizza

  • My second attempt to lay up a Gooney Bird mask for Super Fan Patrick. You saw on my last video that there are substantial problems getting a latex mask to form inside a fiberglass mold. But that's how we used to do it in the 70's, before we discovered plaster mold making techniques. We made all our masks out of latex in fiberglass molds, but I just can't seem to get it to work.

    Hey Aaron the reason why you are having problems are the solvents in the fiberglass molds they prevent the latex from curing properly or at all.. usually epoxy is recommended these days.
    Look into getting a spray on sealant to prevent problems with the polyester solvents in fiberglass molds which can last for YEARS so I've heard.
    Keep up the good work. Love to see your passion still being there.

    The nice thing is that you're getting very close, look at how at least some of the features stayed intact when you pull out that mask! You could sell that on eBay and I guarantee someone would buy it.

      I can back that; I know a handful of people who would probably want it regardless of condition.

    The thing is that you did your best and you uhhh.... And you asked a friend out in attempt number 3 and he made a mold for you and when you put
    the liquid in the Looney Bird mood and let it dry and you pulled it out it came all together so congrats Aaron Fechter.😃

    Is there any way you can contact any of the old craftsmen that worked at CE? It looks like that's your best bet on getting that done cheaply.
    Also, sorry about the Wolf Pack not having a home. I was there when it got auctioned off last week.

    Try making a plaster mold like you said, or make the latex less watery

  • @VampireWestly

    Did you perhaps use a mold release agent? Something that the latex would stick to, rather than the fiberglass its self?

    aaron fechter, I have an idea, i would fill it to the top, let it sit for a week an a half and see what will happen, you said the plug was made from a 2 month period. I might be that fiberglass changes over time not making it able to sustain conditions for mask making

    the form rubber is the kind that expands look around you must of found an inside plug mold too!!!! that gos in side so when it expands the piece will come out hollow.

  • @Macabrecrypt
    @Macabrecrypt Před 7 lety

    I think one of the biggest problems was that Aaron dumped latex into the mould. It tore the skin that was begging to form. Maybe a gentle stream would have worked. Not sure! Just my opinion!

    Did you put in mold release before you put the chemicals in? If you are still having trouble write me back, I know a few friends in the toy industry that are more pro than myself at casting toy models in different materials that might be able to give you some tips for what they do. We work more with resin but maybe in swapping tips we might be able to help you figure out what to do? (I think I still have your email if they might know and you are still stuck.)

    • @TheLemmyCorper
      @TheLemmyCorper Před 8 lety

      the plaster molds have tiny holes in them that allows the latex to dry more efficiently, the fiberglass ones are pretty much sealed

    • @animatronicswarehouse
      @animatronicswarehouse Před 8 lety

      I don't think that's true. I make plaster molds and they don't have holes in them. if they did it would leak latex out.

    • @TheLemmyCorper
      @TheLemmyCorper Před 8 lety

      ShowbizPizzaFan I meant microscopic holes, they are large enough for air to circulate but not for the latex to leak out
