  • Karen Lee made an unconventional choice to become a female prison warden 20 years ago and played a pivotal role in steering traditional prisons in the direction of community corrections and rehabilitation. The example she set continues to inspire other female Captains of Lives such as Koh Zhi Mian, a superintendent in the Changi Prison Complex.

    Physical training aside but isn’t it very dangerous for a female warden like zhimian to be in a male prison. Especially when you need to do prison rounds at night time.
    Its like putting herself in unnecessary risk. I always thought female prison wardens are forbidden to work in male prisons. She should be in a female prison instead due to risk involved

    • @daral2863
      @daral2863 Před rokem

      could you elaborate? what exactly is this risk that she is putting herself in

    • @sarrahjohnwinters1729
      @sarrahjohnwinters1729 Před rokem

      @@daral2863 Well situations like physical aggression can happen or even those unthinkable ones like a sexual assault is possible. I mean its a male prison anything unforeseen could happen since they are women. I’m just concern thats all so they would be better in a female prison. Just my opinion

    • @daral2863
      @daral2863 Před rokem +1

      @@sarrahjohnwinters1729 Thanks for replying & respect your opinion. But there are many strands to your viewpoint. Wouldn’t physical aggression be a potential problem in female prisons also? Males can also be subjected to physcal aggression and sexual assault. And if male inmates as a group are thought to pose a risk of committing sexual assault, how can their release from prison ever be justified (since this theoretical risk will remain (& may even be greater) when they leave prison).
      If we operate under the assumption that all male inmates are potentially violent and should be treated with suspicion, this will rub off on them and they may follow this script when released from prison. However, one gets a sense from the video there is mutual trust and respect between inmates and the prison officers, which over time will increase their chances of long-term successful rehabilitation.
