Considering we were coming off a run that spent most of the time dunking on the idea of Wakandan exceptionlism (r*ape camps, Wakanda colonizing the Originators etc) and framing T'Challa as some authoritarian despot (seeking guidance from dictators, coup attempt etc), I really and truly fail to grasp what the point of Ridley's run was other than destabilizing T'Challa. There's just no interesting story here. Nobody actually buys into Jhai being this important person in T'Challa's life. Nobody who's read prior BP books buys into Wakanda trippin this much over damn sleeper agents either. You say Ridley was just "putting it to bed" but in reality, Ridley just dug up the deconstructionist themes of a story that was JUST put to bed (Coates run) and inartfully rehashed it. It's why there's a lot of criticism. The same ground got retreaded in a very contrived way and with absolutely no pay off, just a further decline of T'Challa's stature.
The run also forgets two VERY crucial story details, seemingly for the express purpose of shitting on T'Challa.
    1. T'Challa emphatically supported the creation of a constitutional monarchy. It was his idea to create a constitution (Black Panther Vol. 6 #12) In this run they have him acting like he was dragged into it.
    2. Shuri was queen and regent when Atlantis attacked and was the one who issued retaliation on Atlantis AGAINST T'Challa's advice. (New Avengers Vol 3. #7 and #8) This is what caused Namor to send the Black Order to destory Wakanda (New Avengers Vol. 3 #22) Nothing to do with T'Challa.
T'Challa's entire disposition this run forgets point #1 and Folasade's rational for blaming T'Challa for Namor forgets point #2. These are just two examples of inconsistencies, there are many more, but it's one of many reasons why this run is just amateurish. It ignores a lot of canon, and not for a payoff of a better overall story.

  • @AceTheOutsider
    @AceTheOutsider Před rokem +8

I think all of BWFs breakdowns have been fair, and at this point I’m convinced the fanhood is divided into 3 parts - A) the side that wants T’Challa the Champion, to remain triumphant in every circumstance. Then there’s B), who are enjoying the drama of loss and gain that appears to add depth to T’Challa’s experience and that of Wakanda as a whole. And then me in the middle, teetering both sides.
I think T’Challa and Wakanda are highly underrepresented in all forms of media. We don’t have ANYTHING where T’Challa is catching Ws. Not movies, not cartoons, not video games, and clearly not his own comic run (except maybe Avengers). He went from Emperor to Exile like damn homie, in 2020 you was the man, homie! Wtf happened to…
But I also think the comics are directing Wakanda with its flaws in mind. If we were Wakandan, after all the attacks, our king galavanting abroad, we’re warring with each other, we’d probably have some issues too (speaking generally). Wakanda just isn’t a utopia, though it’s given that impression a number of ways. I respect challenging its ideals, though I don’t agree with how some writers have done it, because it’s felt forced.
I almost wish this story was swapped with Intergalactic Empire, which seemed to put T’Challa back on the throne, a higher one at that (figuratively and literally). This story ran like none of that even happened - I’d of much rather seen some space adventures. But the man could use a break. Heavy is the head! Like E said, it’s taking me back to Man Without Fear days for sure. Street level, low tech, instinctual T’Challa. Perhaps he’ll uncover a deeper threat to Wakanda he otherwise wouldn’t have noticed. He is, after all, still King of the Dead, still Black Panther. I’m personally hoping Folasade is lining herself up for failure. Tosin seemed cool when he was first introduced, but he’s another hard headed angsty teen that I’m actually hoping can be groomed by T’Challa or another great hero figure. I’m looking forward to Ewing’s run!
S/O to anyone who read all this because I have NOT had much time to speak in an audience that wasn’t all on Side A lmaooo

Good points. I agree with a lot of what you said, but I disagree with your framing of the 3 camps. I don't really think there's a camp that needs to see T'Challa triumphant in every circumstance. I think most ppl enjoy seeing characters pushed to their limit, the stakes just have to be believable and the characterization has to feel true to character. I've said it before, but it's why ppl don't dog Hickman's T'Challa or Priest's, he gets pushed to his limit, takes some Ls but still feels like "T'Challa" the whole time. Miles Morales doesn’t want to be Black. Blade is too busy hunting vamps… so on and so forth. Jubilee has done more for mutants than any of marvels big name Black heroes have done for black people

Ernie I love your channel but your “Black Panther” analysis is way off base when speaking towards what other people don’t like about it. If you personally like it though, that’s fine, everybody won’t like the same things. But this book caught a lot of flack from a lot of people for a reason.

what you said about them realizing theyre both right and wrong, and T'challa growing to hate aspects of what he's become; that was really quite poignant and beautiful. But the way it was written and illustrated in the comic? boyyyy that was some hot trash. This version of Wakanda is a whole lot like a Wakanda that has been colonized and that defeats the entire point.

Honestly, this was a very different run. I'm actually happy we actually addressed some of the criticisms about T'Challa and Wakanda as a whole. I know folks are not that to tells not King anymore but 1, I could have sworn we all learned a while ago that monarchies are bad & 2, this really makes T'Challa a man of the people now. He's not in his palace in the Golden City. He now will love among the citizens, experience average... Well as average a life in Wakanda can be.

    • @oscrmc8496

He was always kinda like that. He was only really in the Palace when big things happened and/or he needed to be. Mainly because wakanda was almost crime free ( in the past, probably not so much recently). Yh it's great that monarchies are shown as bad but doesn't mean tchalla couldn't be the prime minister or president in the democracy. You don't need to remove him totally from power to remove the monarchy. Atleast make him the head of security rather than just kick him out.

Too many of y'all are acting like addressing flaws about Wakanda and T'Challa is some grand subversion and long time coming, but it's not. It literally happened for 6 years with the last run. Monarchy bad, sad T'Challa, was the entire thematic throughput of the Coates era. I do not understand why you guys keep acting like this was new or novel idea when BP comics have exclusively been doing this exact same story post Secret Wars lol, that's why ppl are complaining about the run cuz they're burnt out on that deconstructionist storytelling.

Not only was he losing to people he should've beat. But first John takes away tchallas masculinity in front of the woman who looked up to him(Dora Milaje, Storm, Shuri Damm near)
He gets his ass beat by jhai when tchalla would've dogged him with one hand.
TChalla telling storm "jhai was the only man I ever cared about"...
Despite this comicbook run not only being jhais first appearance, but then he tells this to storm his ex wife. Like u mean to tell me Shuri, Queen Romanda, TChaka, Azzuri, Storm, are less important then Jhai? 😂
TChalla basically being mentality weak going against Buffalo solider and completely gets his ass beat to a new character with no build up? 😭
Tchalla being king of the dead? Having 1,000,000 years of strenght, speed, fighting styles, fighting experience, Can Summon The dead, Can Summon his past ancestors to help aid fight him, having on-go technology with his necklace, and yet he's sitting back getting his ass beat?.
The entire store they keep telling TChalla "he's not king anymore" or "we won't follow u anymore tchalla since you aren't king"
Meanwhile TCHALLA IS AN INTERGALACTIC "EMPEROR" OF "5 GALAXIES".
And yet they're telling him he's not king anymore? 😭 this story was completely trash to me. It only had 4 good things I liked about the story and 2 of them were literally already told by Christopher preist. 😂.
