The chimneys at Ampere Way are the last remaing parts of Croydon Power Station, which was closed in 1990. The chimneys are grade II listed. The rest of the site was developed into the IKEA store and Warners Multiplex. The road that serves IKEA & Warners was named Ampere Way as a reference to the power station.

The older trams from 2000 are Bombardier CR4000s. 24 were built. 23 remain in service. 2551 was withdrawn after the Sandilands disaster. They are numbered 2530 to 2553. The reason for this is that the highest numbered London Transport tram was 2529. Money from the Network North HS2 plan has been given to TFL to order replacements for the CR 4000s. Tenders have recently been issued. The more modern trams built between 2010 & 2012 are Staedtler Variobahns. There are 12, numbered between 2554 & 2565.

Went for a quick look and I have to agree about it. The original CR4000's are basically Flexity Link trams, similar to the K4000 in Cologne and Typ T in Vienna. For back in the days, it is really cool rolling stock by means of design. Surprisingly there is a more modern version of the Typ T on the road in Vienna, namely the Typ T1. Also the Variobahn's are really cool trams. A little correction: The name of the manufacturer is not STAEDLER but STADLER.

Croydon born and bred but now living in Cornwall.I am old enough (born 1938) to remember and ride on the original trams in Croydon! If I remember correctly there were 3 different routes numbers 16,18 and 42.We used to have two trolleybus routes (630 and 654) as well. I regularly used the 654 to get to school. I also remember the all electric all Pullman "Brighton Belle" passing through East Croydon non stop London Victoria to Brighton.

In TFL's fare structure, the trams are classed as buses. The fare is £1.75, with a daily cap of £5.25. If changing to National Rail at Beckenham Junction, Birkbeck, Elmers End, Mitcham Junction, & Wimbledon, you need to touch your contactless card on a yellow oyster reader when entering the NR platform. When changing on to or from the District Line at Wimbledon, you need to tap your card on the purple Oyster validator on the District Line platforms.
There is one Out Of Station Interchange on the Tram network. Its Morden Road Tram Stop and South Wimbledon Station on the Northern Line. You are allowed 20 minutes between tapping at one & tapping in at the other. Or, thanks to the hopper fare (unlimted bus & tram trips in 70 mins for £1.75) you can get a 93 bus two stops.

Hey there G! Off on tour again? Croydon trams are a great way to use the old, disused railway corridors and open up the old tram routes again. A friend I had in Croydon hated them but I took to the idea better than she did, although she did get to like the accessability. I'm glad you've managed to do some more tram video recording as it's a much changed place since I was last there. At a lot lower cost than Edinburgh but hey, Brexstuff! Catch up again and take care. All the best. Cheers!

There is a rare reminder of good Network SouthEast at Waddon Marsh. On the footpath down the bridge under Purley Way, there are 5 red NSE lampposts, ending where Waddon Marsh Station was sited. The current tram stop was moved a couple of hundred yards closer to the Purley Way retail stores.

  • @kevinlucioni7256

Parts of the Wimbledon branch, at Waddon Marsh, and between Mitcham & Morden Rd actually run over the first horse drawn railway in the UK, the Surrey Iron Railway. It was a freight railway that ran along the course of the River Wandle from Croydon up to the River Thames at Wandsworth. One of the original freight station buildings remains by Mitcham Tram Stop. Station House at Mitcham is the last surviving Surrey Iron Railway building. There is a road by Mitcham Tram Stop called Tramway Path. The tramway referred to is The Surrey Iron, not the current one.

      @pras12100 Před 6 měsíci

      Regarding:
"...the first horse drawn railway in the UK..."
By the time the Surrey Iron Railway was opened in 1802 there were a number of other examples around the country. The first one to get an act of parliament was the Middleton Railway which opened in 1758. See Wikipedia for details.
"Station House at Mitcham is the last surviving Surrey Iron Railway building."
Several people have looked into this and have found no evidence that the SIR ever owned the building now known as "Station Court". It appears to have been built as a residence for a merchant at about the same time as the railway. I assume he saw a business opportunity in being next door to the SIR.

As for the 2 types of trams, the newer ones are the Stadler Variobahn which initially were part of an order for 24 trams by the city of Bergen, Norway, who only needed 18 of them when they opened their first line in 2010, so Croydon bought the other 6, which is why the front door by the driver is on the European side. The other trams in Croydon are all Bombardier CR4000 series, based on and almost identical to the K4000 in Cologne, Germany, where they are also used as underground trains.

Really enjoyed this one G, almost on my second home territory there with the trams. They are really useful to get to and from Wimbledon at one end but also Beckenham Junction at the other, for hopping on to Southeastern that way. Interestingly, the original Hopper Fare came about on the trams, as there were feeder bus services that linked to the trams at New Addington (they were numbered T31, T32 and T33) and meant you could complete your journey via Oyster on one trip provided your bus touch in was within 70 minutes of touching in at the tram stop. Today, only the T33 remains, renumbered as the 433. However, the success of the Hopper meant it was expanded to all buses, and as the trams are the same fare structure as the buses, I've often done tram from Croydon to Wimbledon followed by 93 to Putney, meaning £1.75 for the whole trip - pretty decent that.

If you bought a Bus and Tram pass you would have paid £6 for a day ticket
If you used contactless, you would have paid £5.25 maximum as that's the daily cap for buses and trams.
You can also get infinite journeys on bus and trams for £1.75 as long as the time between taping in on your first bus or tram and taping in on your last bus on tram is within 62 minutes.

well this has planted a seed, All the tram stops in Prague. If only i could find a list of all of them. it is complicated in that some named stops will have more than the up and down stop Nakladove Nadrazi has two pairs of stops on different streets. really before i start i would want a full list of all stations but my google foo is weak. On the plus side for 550czk a month. less than 20 of your british pounds it is possible to ride 24/7 so i could do it at no extra cost apart from coffee and snacks. so far best guess is over 600 stops including request stops.

I used to work on the network repairing the tickets machines which have now been removed when they went cash only and visited pretty much every stop weekly, sometimes doing a fare change check I'd do every machine in a day which meant telling the driver what I was doing, standing by the nearest door to the ticket machine, jumping off, checking the fares had updated correctly and jumping back on the same tram. If there was a problem I'd wave the driver on an fix it. This was a fairly typical encounter :-czcams.com/video/li8tQhfp6IY/video.html

How do you think these trams compare with both the Manchester Metrolink or any of the other U.K. tram networks, such as the East Midlands trams around Birmingham & Wolverhampton? Aside from the Metrolink here in Manchester, I’m the most familiar with the LUAS trams in Dublin when I go home to Ireland on visits

@@GLovesTrains if at all possible, I’d encourage you to visit my native Ireland and see our railways, not just in Dublin on Iarnod Éireann (Irish Rail) - I know that the Irish government is planning massive rail expansion and I hope that this will include the extension of the M3 Parkway line all the way to Navan direct from Dublin Docklands, which will make getting home off the ferry from Holyhead into Dublin Port (North Wall) so much easier, helped by a LUAS tram extension to the Irish Ferries & Stena Terminals - another private group is also planning to build a Metro train to Dublin Airport and this in addition to DART Underground will prove very exciting - already, Dublin Pearse Station on the DART and Wicklow/Wexford/Rosslare line has been massively refurbished and it is the terminus for services to Drogheda and Dundalk on the Belfast line via Dublin Connolly, where the Dublin DART runs as far north as Malahide and as far south as Greystones 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️
