    Today I realized you can teach an old dog new tricks! I have been sewing for years, and I never realized changing the tension could be beneficial.
    Thank you. I have always pulled the bobbin thread to form the gather, but the addition of the higher tension definitely helps.
    I think it is a shame that home ec is not pushed in high school these days. The basic sewing and cooking skills are definitely helpful in later life.

    I've been sewing for 10 years, and your tutorial was the first time that I have understood how to get the tension and the stitch length adjustments make the machine actually gather for you. It's not the first tutorial I've watched on how to make a ruffle, but it is the best one!

    Lisa can’t tell you how much I loved this it brought back so much to me. I used to sew all the time when I was young, learned from my Mom and Home Ec class. I had my Bridal Shower sewing machine for 30 some years till it broke and couldn’t be fixed and have not sewed anything in years. After watching your video I told my husband I have to get a machine so I can sew again I miss it!! Sewing is a lost art, thank you for highlighting it!

    Ive always used a ruffler foot instead of this method then sew the ends together. Done it both ways and like the attachment results better. Ruffles can also be created by running a zigzag stitch over like crocheting cotton then pulling the cotton to adjust the ruffles.

    Have a question in all my many years of sewing do you not mark your piece in quarters? If you mark that on each piece and match you wont find an area with more ruffle than another. Been sewing 50 yrs. I love your channel. Oh ruffles years ago not only sew ruffles on clothing but there was a time my curtain panels made them all f I'll r my home at the time when they all had ruffles. Learned how using sheets gives a wider width in fabric wears amazing. KEEP teaching your sewing hopefully more will embrace this skill. Now if fabric would back to decent prices it used to be cheaper to sew clothing than buy it. Sewed blue jeans,pjs,it all was my escape time

LOL I want to say that finally I took the leap... yesterday i used my machine (inherited by my grandma who mastered the art of sewing) and my first project was.... taratataaaaan... fixing my 2yo's batman cape! 😂😂 But I did it... I explained to my husband how to thread the machine, fixed the piece and voila .... now my husband believes me that I can sew.... hahahaha NEXT... square pillow covers! can't wait!

    I so appreciate these beginner sewing tutorials! They are giving me the confidence to tackle more sewing projects already. I'm wondering if you could talk about sourcing materials for sewing (fabric store, online, thrift store). For my projects, for example, I'm always looking for natural fibers (and organic if possible) and noticed that it is difficult to find natural sewing materials in stores. Thank you. You are always and inspiration! ♡

  • @pennylane36
    @pennylane36 Před 5 lety +6

    Hey Lisa. I don't top stitch a ruffle that way. The top stitch actually is not on the ruffle but on the skirt. After you serge the two pieces together, you fold it up toward the skirt not down toward the ruffle.
    In any garment construction even just a dress skirt attached to a bodice, the seam is turned up toward the bodice and the top stitches are on the bodice.
    The flat seem has to be top stitched to another flat surface. A ruffle isn't flat

    • @rld1278
      @rld1278 Před 3 lety

      I can see that applying to some items, such as a dress, a pillow case, etc. but some items you'd want to do the opposite such as for a dust ruffle.

      I wondered if she misspoke but I didn’t watch her that closely to see if she had done what she said. I was just sewing my valance ruffle on and went to do the stitch in the ditch I’m like wait while ironing first the ruffle seam edges lay best toward the top so I caught myself thankfully

  • @pescatarianwifelife2751

    l’ve always ran thread thru fabric manually to do a ruffle, so this was interesting.
    Would still like to see surging up close.
    Would like more on thread tension/stitch length .
    Please consider some kind of written guide that we could follow that would
    explain what tension and stitch length does when sewing -
    I always found that confusing......
    Great series!!!

    Serger? Make TONS of ruffles in SECONDS!!
    Settings:
    Left & Right needles: 7
    Upper & Lower loopers: 3
    Differential Feed: 2.5
    Stitch length: 4
    Use a test scrap of fabric of similar fabric content as your “good fabric” , increasing your fabric for the ruffle by at least 2”-3” as the gathering for your ruffles will “shrink” the yardage. Have fun, Ladies & Gents!!🥰🧵💖

    You’ve made me want to pull out my Singer my sweet mother bought me in the 70’s for Christmas one year. I took sewing classes in High School (70’s) and I’ve made quilt’s and such but it’s been 20 plus years. I want to make a blue jean quilt made with old and thrifted jeans complete with a few pockets and patches that’s already on the jeans. Not sure just yet if I will put ruffles around it but we’ll see. Where did you get the individual tall thread holder that’s holding your thread. What is it called? I always see the large spools of thread at the thrift stores. Maybe I’ll start buying them. Thanks so much!
