What downcountry bike would be top of your list for 2023? 👇
None
Canyon Neuron or Canyon Lux Trail.
I am thinking about the specialized epic evo.
Saying these bikes are “surprisingly good value” is honestly nuts to me. Bike prices have gotten utterly out of control. How any normal middle class person with a family can afford these bikes is a mystery to me. It feels like every year it gets harder and harder for average folks to justify and afford anything other than an entry level bike or slightly better.
I wouldnt say these are good value bikes at all. Most of these are cream of the crop, high end bikes from niche bike brands. The people who are buying these bikes have the money to spend on them and expensive bikes have always been this expensive. What they are comparing is these bikes to some bike from 2012 that rode like crap compared to how these new bikes ride and I suppose to them that makes these bike "good value for money". These arent good value, these ARE expensive. But people who have to have the latest and greatest dont care what it costs.
I doubt any “middle class” people would struggle to afford any of these bikes!
@@Mockle07 im middle class American and these bikes are not affordable in any sense. I dont even have kids, mtb is one of my only hobbies and anything over 5k is already an expensive bike. Let alone ones that cost more just because of the brand on the frame. That being said, you get what you pay for. A highend, niche bike is going to cost a ton of money as it should.
@@MTB_CRZY Ah maybe it’s a national thing - in the UK “middle class” is a term actually used for pretty wealthy people.
I don’t disagree that bikes are expensive though, and especially when there is absolutely no justification for it.
@@Mockle07 middle class here in the US is defined as a "middle of the road" family. An average income earning family, still finds these bikes expensive lol
I bought the Izzo Uncaged last year wanting to get into more trail-focused riding, but replaced my XC bike with it, so it can do both things. It was a no brainer with the spec of the bike. It would be difficult to even buy the parts specced on the bike for the price of the complete bike. Might not be the most well known or exotic brand, but damn does YT still deliver bang for your buck. Ridden it a couple of thousand miles, in terrain WAY over what its supposed to ride through, and had zero issues.
The Revel Ranger, in Greenjeans color - stunning and I just test rode one, and MAN does it climb well, and descend ridiculously incredibly.
We've had one on long term review and can confirm; it is awesome!
I've been riding the 2022 Scott Spark 970 for slightly over a year now and I've upgraded the front forks to the new 140mm RS Pike Ultimate. Right off the bat i could feel it being worlds apart from the stock 130mm and absolutely way more capable. I certainly don't need the front lock out but i like the rear lock out.
I think Scott makes really good bikes but they should leave a bit of space for consumers to custom their bike... their Twinloc didn't leave room for me to put my AXS dropper remote so i had to ditch the Twinloc levers and use Fox's CTD.
I think it's great that the 2023 Spark will have rear suspension that has a piggy back...i hope it'll fit the 2022 model cos if it does, I'll get it fitted into my bike.
Rocky Mountain Element for me. ❤
BC40 is just a beautiful bike 🔥
It really is! We (well our presenter Tom at least!) are gagging to try it!
@@bikeradar please do. Definitely going to watch the review 🏆🍺
What about the Transition Spur? An absolutely superb bike. Down country is a gimmick. These bikes are essentially short travel trail bikes and wish they would be referred to as such. I agree with the comments on price, but cycling is so popular at the moment the manufacturers can get away with their prices☹️ I’m fortunate to have a few bikes and can enjoy the local trails on my sub £1000 hardtail or my carbon FS. It’s just a different riding experience. You don’t need to spend thousands of pounds to have a good time on a mountain bike.
💯AWESOME LIST! 💯
Thanks 💯 Glad you liked it!
what is the assembled length ?
i get away from mtb 1 year and theres already a new sub category of bikes? what this down country stuff? i wanted to trade my rigid xc bike for a trail one but this might do the trick
You missed the Ibis DV9 and Yeti ARC.
Canyon Lux😎
Very nice SHORT TRAVEL TRAIL BIKES, cheers
Or long travel Xc bikes
Light trail bikes😅
How is the Scott Spark a trail bike? 🤷🏼♂️😂
@@Mockle07 is an ST 😂
@@Mockle07 when it has a 130mm Pike up front and 120mm out back. Its filed under trailbike on Scott's website
Great more bikes that sacrifice climbing. I notice on my rides way more time is spent climbing than descending.
These really aren't much slower than many XC race bikes on a smooth climb and some are actually way better on tech climbs too because they have better traction
This is a joke, right? Modern bikes like this climb way better than previous bikes
Definitely! Thank goodness we don't have 130mm stems and 500mm wide bars these days!
Spot Ryve 115!!!
Another USA bike that rips, super interesting design for sure!
Orbea Oiz for me.Greetings from Greece...
Yep... silly they didn't mention it in this video. The longer travel version is a masterpiece of engineering.
You can’t say headset routing dividing. It’s pretty universal that everyone hates it.
We have to be slightly impartial... but it isn't a trend most of us are keen on!
It's a shame to not give a shoutout to Carbon wasp truffle, 120/120, lightweight and aggressive
Another great bike! Keen to see how it rides and compares to bikes like the Spur and Spark, very similar on paper
Scott Spark wins.
Maybe you could focus on attainable bikes.
Can we just call these short travel trail bikes and be done with this down country business lol
DOUBLE. DOWN. COUNTRY. You heard it here first 😜
@@bikeradar 🤣
incomplete without epic evo
It's a few years old now, but still a great bike!
Another attempt by Manufacturers to re-invent something totally unoriginal and ultimately more expensive????? Surely these are just hard tail cross country bikes, if so I've already got one of these. In 1998, I bought a new now extensively modified Cannondale F700SL, chromillusionpurpleen colour!!! Even with mods it cost way less than some of the stuff here!! I'm happy even though I'm riding a vintage machine!!!!😁😁😁😁😁
Retro is cool, but these are a lot more capable than bikes from back in the day. The main thing, as always, no matter what bike you have, ride what you got and shred it!
Orange Stage Evo/ Five Evo you British Bozos!
Calm down Susan...
Awesome bikes, but a pain to mount a bottle cage on! Downcountry bikes need all the water bottles 😂💧
@@bikeradar wear a pack.
@bikeradar. So what about the Cotic then…minimal room for bottle there
One XC rider dies every time you say ,,JUST ~12kg" for a damn ,,lightweight" bike lol. Everything above 11kg is unacceptable !
Bikes sure are getting heavier! But when you can ride these bikes so hard, it pays to have a bit of heft to hold them together, particularly tyres!
Depends on frame size too, an XL is obviously going to be heavier than smaller frame builds.
@@robertthomason7619 yes, but 99% of data is in size L or M
You missed a lot.....
BH Lynx LT- Secialized Epic Evo- Orbea Oiz, Canyon Lux trail- Cannondale Scalpel SE- KTM Scarp MT .... and so on
@@roscoe40 and the top fuel
@@Sketchybackyardtrails also the transition spur!
We included the Spur in the our last Downcountry Top 5, and there or may or not be one in an upcoming video... stay tuned!
So many great bikes! It took a LONG time to narrow it down to these five, but all those mentioned are great bikes
This is another fad that needs to be stamped out permanently! There are way way to many bikes for different applications. It must be so confusing for someone new trying to get into the sport trying to chose the right bike. No wonder the bike industry is in trouble with rubbish like this.
Sad angry little man haha
@@_Conrad_ Sad no, little yes!!
