Fun fact, the white boat with the old man and 2 kids is made after the Sundowner, Charles Lightoller's boat, he was 2nd officer on Titanic and during Dunkirk he assisted in the evacuation, he saved 130 men on his yacht that was made for 21 people

338,000 men were saved at Dunkirk of that 123,000 were french and over 700 civilian ships and boats were used to help rescue everyone.
Pretty sure Tom Hardy set his plane on fire because the English Spitfires were more advanced than the German planes. He didn't want them getting ahold of the technology. Also, it would have been a trophy for the Germans to show off in newspapers, so he didn't give them the satisfaction.
Its not that its more advanced. If they have an intact one it allows them to fly it and find its flaws and train their pilots better against that plane.

It was their orders, no matter what they were flying, to avoid letting the enemy get hold of intact aircraft to research.
I consider this movie to be part of an accidental trilogy: Dunkirk, The King's Speech and Darkest Hour. All deal with the same events but from differing perspectives.
That's a nice thought, they're all excellent films!
My favorite fact about this movie is that Mr. Dawson was based on a man named Charles Lightoller.
Lightoller was one of the four surviving officers of the Titanic. His wiki page is an interesting read, he basically Forrest Gumped his way through the early 20th century.

Harry Styles had big shoes to fill at the end when he repeated Winston Churchill's iconic speech.
When it became apparent that the English would have to evacuate their army at Dunkirk, a lot of people worked around the clock to locate boats 30 feet long or longer, contact their owners, and get the boats in running order so that they could be used to evacuate men from Dunkirk. Movies make it look like they just used a loudspeaker at the water's edge to get whatever boats that happened to be there to join in the rescue effort, but lots of planning and frantic work was involved. The men on the "Mole" with blue helmets with a ridge at the top are French soldiers.
A similar but less known situation happened when German and Romanian troops surrounded by the Soviet army on Crimea was evacuated by all Romanian boats they could muster.
As a British descendant whose grandparents served in the RAF, even thinking about the miracle of Dunkerque is enough to get the tears welling. One of the proudest moments in our history, before so many years of darkness and suffering until the final victory. Loved sharing the experience with you and seeing how much it touched you too. Dunkirk lies pretty much on the border between France and Belgium, in a partly Flemish-speaking area of France, so there are a lot of different ways to write and pronounce it. Dunkirk is the English transcription of the name, but it can also be called Dunkerque (French), Duunkerke (Flemish), Duinkerken (Dutch) or Dünkirchen (German). Because everything is weirdly complicated when Belgium is involved.

The "Shepard's Tone" is the ascending sound that runs throughout and maintains the tension.
It's an idea that's easier to explain in pictures, rather than words.
Some random tidbits..
The song playing "When Home Arrives" is Elgar's "Nimrod". It is considered a song of Remembrance in England. I cannot watch that moment in the movie without being hit in the feels.
Michael Caine has a cameo in the movie, he is Tom Hardy's superior officer Fortis Lead. The dialogue however was taken from the role he played in The Battle of Britain Movie which came out in the 1960's. You should add that movie to your list of things to watch. It had quite a cast.
The reason why the RAF didn't have a huge presence over Dunkirk was that Churchill and the British were saving the fighters and Fighter Command for the future confrontation with the Germans in said Battle of Britain.
I will echo what one of the other guys said about Tom Hardy's character torching the Spitfire at the end of the movie. Up to that point, the German ME-109 dominated in Europe because it was a vastly superior machine to anything anyone else had. The Spitfire was the first fighter that was capable of going toe to toe with the ME-109.
The Spitfire had an interesting backstory. The man who designed the plane was a designer of championship racing planes. He was diagnosed with cancer and and went to convalesce in Europe. While he was there he got a close up view of the rise of Fascism in Germany and Italy and was convinced that another war was on the horizon. So he cut short his recovery and came back to England where he threw his energy into designing and creating the Spitfire. His cancer came back and he died just before the first prototype of the Spitfire flew.
I would say Operation Dynamo was Churchills masterpiece..I know it was a collaboration, but it brought out the best in people..I strongly recommend watching The Darkest Hour next..especially in this context
I saw that movie a few years ago. And I am always surprised by the scenes in the air, the very unique shots, and very realistic dog fights, the elegant Spitfire, and the stylized and fast German Bf 109. I loved this reaction, hugs Biss 💜
This is one my favourite movies and probably my all time favourite Nolan movie.
The way it's shot, the special effects, camera angles and not to forget the insanely tense music all hits a home run in my book.
I cried, too. I break down every time I see it. All those people who were willing to give their lives to save their soldiers. Thanks for letting us watch with you! God bless you!

Yes and today it's globally renowned for being the place migrants get stuck in when going in England so they build a mad max style society there. Really charming.
This is a Nolan film. You recognize Hardy as the one with covered lips😅.
The Darkest Hour covers these events through the life of Churchill - also very well done.
The civilian fleet is one of Britain's greatest moments.
The best WW2 fighter scenes ever..simply filmed..no over the top special effects. I wish there were more.

The little boats were not used to pick up soldiers and take them to England. They were primarily used to pick up soldiers from the beach and take them to bigger ships waiting offshore.
A small point but the UK had a king during WW2, George 6th; he was followed by his daughter in 1952, Elizabeth 2nd.
This film is the point where Natzi Germany took control of western Europe.
Dunkirk was one of the top 3 movies I saw in 2017, the others being Darkest Hour and The Death of Stalin. Glad you got to experience this brilliantly shot movie.
The evacuation was hugely important to the defense of these Islands. Without which we wouldn't have been able to defend ourselves from invasion. This along with the battle of Britain kept Hitler from our shores. Without which no platform would've existed for the launching of the D-Day landings, which given Hitlers invasion of Russia, would, as we know, eventually lead the collapse of the Third Reich. But Hitlers downfall started with this evacuation. The film is superb in it's depictions, and homage to those who served and suffered back then. It reflects the British spirit of that time well, and I am old enough to remember the spirit lingering across the long years after the war. Much of which has gone now in my view. No matter, a great film, and once again you show your humanity. You are very special in my humble view. A testament to your parents who raised you well. Though I dare say you have imperfections as do we mere viewers. A fine reaction to a fine film. Be well young lady. You, family, friends, and all.
Their is a "inaccuracie" right at the beginning: the French where waiting for their fate in this area. They were fighting hard to retain the Germans and allow the Brits to escape.
A German officer said "the British will fight until the last french" when viewing this fierce fight

You are forgetting the 15,000 brave British soldiers who remained to die or be captured, defending the perimeter to allow 130,000 Frenchmen to be evacuated to England.
@@ralphraffles1394 Maybe, the whole point was that the allied weren't just sitting on a beach waiting for rescue. Plus I'm and I preach for my church. That being said one of my close relatives was on that trip to England, obviously came back afterwards.

@@brunodelacolo1911 You are wrong. The British had to prioritise British troops, or they would not have had an army to fight the Germans after Dunkirk. But over 120,000 French soldiers were also saved, and served under De Gaulle for the remainder of the war until France was liberated by the Allies (including at the cost of many British lives). I think your obvious hatred of the British is blinding you to the truth. As a footnote, my own uncle was wounded driving a landing craft onto the Normandy beaches on D-Day, so I feel strongly that you need to do some research before you talk such nonsense!!!
This earned Christopher Nolan his first ever Best Director Oscar nomination, believe it or not. OPPENHEIMER was his 2nd Director nomination (and first win).
TENET (2020) is a mandatory reaction IMO. Crazy underappreciated. To be honest I think it is his best film, since the action sequences are much better executed and audio and visuals blend together very efficiently, not relying on exposition too much while keeping the movie going along.

After you watch this, I highly recommend you watch the film “Darkest Hour” starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill. It focuses on this event but on the political side of it. It’s a masterpiece and Oldman just absolutely killed it in his role as Churchill. One of my favorite movies of all time!
Love the opening. Building tension with little sound other than the rustling of the pamphlets and minor background noises to the absolute terror of the sound of an incoming Stuka dive bomber. _Chef's kiss_
The success of Operation Dynamo is largely due in part to Adolf's ineptitude. Göring convinced him that the Luftwaffe could wipe out the straggling British Expeditionary Force, and so the Führer ordered the 7th Panzer Corps under Erwin Rommel to stop when they easily could have overrun the beaches and forced a surrender.
Adolf was Allies greatest secret weapon against the Axis.
Another crazy battle was Passchendaele. The movie concentrates on the final stages of the battle, where the Canadians took over after everyone else failed. WWI

They just got this ship loaded. _To capacity._ It was all set to cross and then it was sunk and had to be evacuated. _All_ those soldiers got aboard in the hope of getting to safety, and now, suddenly, they have to bail out before they drown.
They didn't hire the smaller boats.
The smaller boats went because people needed help.

Christopher Nolan's illogical commitment to using almost no CGI in his later films really hurt the visual impact of the beach scenes in this movie... in real life it would have been WAY more crowded than what is shown here.
It's an aesthetic debate, but I would argue that attempting to get an accurate picture of the events on film is a fool's errand anyway, and therefore the intent should be to capture the feel of the thing. In that context, CGI can only interfere. ...And, as a side note, I think at best CGI would leave you trying to decide which disbelief you want to suspend.
I never noticed, but dang, Tom Hardy really does have distinctive lips. Not sure I'll ever be able to unsee that.
In WW2, UK by Winston Cherchil, prime minister, had not enough ship to pick 300,000 soldiers from Dunkirk. Then he asked English fisherman to help, picked soldiers up to UK without hiring. Otherwise soldier would be all die. And finally this mission completed by taking 270,000 soldiers back. Only 30,000 died there.
Please also watch darkest hour and kings speech. These 3 really go well together. You get to see how these events overlap and interact!
The British saved an entire army. When you compare this to the early part of WW2 on the Eastern Front what one realizes is for the Western Allies (Great Britain and the US) life was precious. By the time the first year of the War was over the Russians had already lost 6 million men and Stalin was not even concerned. The bloodiest battle of the War was Stalingrad where 650,000 Germans were sacrificed for Hitler's ego and Stalin lost 1.3 million soldiers and civilians that he did not allow to evacuate. Consider reacting to ENEMY AT THE GATES, about the battle of Stalingrad.

My thinking may be off, but I think you're not exactly correct there. The War began Sept 1, 1939. The Russians were not heavily involved until 1941 against Germany. While they had casualties invading Poland and in The Winter War with Finland, their casualties were not even close to a million (around 400,000 maybe?)
@@gregall2178 You better check your history. Prior to Stalingrad, the Russians had already lost over 6 million men. This is from June 22, 1941 to August 1942. Keep in mind that Russian survival rate in German POW camps was 3%. Stalin didn't give a crap about humanity only his power and Communism's dominance over the world.

Loved your reaction, i love this movie too. There was an annoying school of thought for awhile that Nolan was a cold and clinical director, that he was more interested in the technical and visual rather then story or character, but this is completely not true..his films are all about story and character, and he has the visual sensibility too. I love his films...arguably one of the best directors working in the industry now.

Although they were supposed to board the french ships to be taken to a port further west in France, many were evacuated to England.

Both my grandfathers were at Dunkirk, one on the ships and one was among the last to board those ships. My entire family was disgusted by this movie. If you read any of the accounts, the thing that every British survivor of Dunkirk will say is "where was the RAF?" - because like it or not , the guys on the beach were under constant air attack from the luftwaffe and the RAF's efforts didnt hinder them that much. And there were 300,000 plus men - French and British - who passed through Dunkirk who had - contrary to the common belief - just given the german army a series of bloody noses. In every engagement between british and french on one side and germans on the other side, the germans were stopped or the british and french fought until they ran out of ammunition, inflicting heavy casualties on the germans.
Instead of telling that story of 300,000 plus men who fought their guts out; instead of correcting the common perception that british and french forces collapsed in the face of the german attack in 1940, when in fact they fought an inspiring retreat in the face of a numerically superior force that had cut them from their supplies. Instead of telling the story of the french and british forces who were left behind and fought until the last bullet; instead of telling the story of how the germans - incensed at their casualties - inflicted massacres and mistreatment on british pows, instead of pointing out that the germans were committing war crimes from the outset even in france in 1940, this movie focuses mostly on the actions of people who were absolutely peripheral to these events.
I have heard a lot from others whose family members were at Dunkirk. I havent heard a single descendant of dunkirk survivors who thinks this movie is accurate or appropriate.
This movie is a travesty. Nolan's worst. Its like making a movie about D day and focussing on the cooks on board the ships. Yeah, ships' cooks are important, but should they really be the focus of the actual bigger events? This movie should have been called "Stuff That happened In and Over the English Channel in June 1940".

As a follow up to this film you should watch 'Darkest Hour' with Gary Oldman. It tells this story from the political and human side in Great Brittan.

That means the enboss would be "All quite on the Western Front" and "Das Boot"
Now I want to see you take on "Das Boot". Definitely som "prolongued" sequences in that one, but you'll see it's necessary for the storytellin. Emotional scarring along the way may occur. 😄

Hello Bisscute, do you think the Royal Air Force pilots should have returned to base to refuel and rearm then return to the Dunkirk area or continue to battle on as depicted in the movie? Also, " Mrs. Miniver " is another telling of the little boats story.
TRIPE! Watch Dinkirk starring John Mills, Richard Attenborough and Bernard Lee. The beach was bombed every day. The town was in ruins. Nolans film is a fantasy.

I saw this in the theater, and when I came out these Boomers were behind me and they were complaining about how loud it was.
You were saying Dunkirk just fine, although the C in Cillian Murphy's name is pronounced like a K. So it's "Kill-ian' and not 'Sill-ian'.
