What a treasure of talent Gordon has left the world. His music was, and is, a blessing .
I first saw Gordon Lightfoot as a student at McMaster University in 1967 or 1968. I was already a fan. We saw him several times at Massey Hall. His songs and lyrics captured the soul of Canada. Listen to the Canadian Railway trilogy or the Edmund Fitzgerald to hear his love of Canada. Thank you Gordon for providing one of the sound tracks to my adult life. Thank you for doing this tribute, Graeme.
Didn't know who he was until "If You Could Read My Mind" in the early 70's and after a few more years of great efforts, I never forgot him!

. I was going to go in Dec at the Canyon Club then it was Cancelled again . The Best .I only own Gords Gold .
I guess you can say his love for Canada in "The Wreck Of" is that it was fortunately an American ship that got sunk and not a Canadian one. Just joking. Canadian mariners take the risk as well on the Lakes, and Gordon knew Canada and so had to know the Lakes. It is a song like some other great composers make that seems to come easy, out of nothing. Nearly perfect on every level. Everything fell into place, it all made total sense. The lyrics were remarkable. The voice- fit. The version we all hear was recorded 1st take.

I remember the moment I first heard his beautiful sweet voice, swooned, went out , and for years, bought every single one of his albums. Then, of course, I downloaded every song he ever recorded. His music moved and calmed me deeply. Thank you, Gordan Lightfoot. You gave us joy and we loved you well.

I'm getting to that age where all my musical heroes are getting old and dying off. My children were lucky to have heard just about every kind of music coming out of my stereo/surround system whilst growing up. Lightfoot was one of those artists they never early on in their lives. I'm glad to see that Geddy Lee (and Alex) were on Gordon's documentary. Even hard rockers could appreciate Gordon's work, as I do.

I saw Gordon Lightfoot live in 2010, front row center. I met him and his band after the show. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian music icon. May he rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️🙏🇨🇦
A true Canadian legend. I shared the same birthday with him. He inspired many musicians and artists. He will be missed but his music will live on.
Along with Black Sabbath and Rush, I cannot go more than a week without listening to Gordon Lightfoot. His music offered a passport into parts of history and all of the human condition. His work is woven through the permanent fabric of Canadian culture and the global quilt of folk music.
His final record “Solo” can now be considered a beautiful closing chapter on a wonderful book of music.

I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, got teary eyed listening to your piece today.
His songs are ones I always include on any playlist I create. His album Gord's Gold is so amazing. His masterful storytelling and rich baritone voice made his songs iconic.
I was fortunate enough to see him in concert in a smaller venue about 14 years ago and it was like having him perform in my living room. He was a man small in size but his performance and heart he put into his songs was larger than life. He seemed like a humble man who really just wanted to share his love of storytelling and we as Canadians are richer for it. A true Canadian hero and icon😢
I always heard that he re-recorded all the songs for the Gord's Gold album.
I love this man. I attended more concerts than I can could count and my daughter has been hooked as well. A truly great man. RIP Gord.

I remember the first time I heard Gordon Lightfoot I fell in love with his awesome voice. "If You Could Read My Mind" and I've loved him since that day. When he released "Edmund Fitzgerald" my brother who had been in the Navy got teary eyed listening... He truly was, will always be a Legend.
Thank you Canada for giving the World some of the most phenomenal voices of our lifetime.

Gordon Lightfoot will go down in music history as one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. I first became aware of him in the mid-sixties, and he was no flash in the pan- his music evolved and stayed fresh and invigorating through our lives. He was an old friend whom one could always count on. His masterpieces- Stay Loose, Ribbon of Darkness, Beautiful, If You Could Read My Mind, Rainy Day People, Sundown , Canadian Railway Trilogy,etc. etc. were musical masterpieces, like fine paintings, or rare wines that one feels privileged to experience. Myself and my friends all take our collective hats off and pay a final tribute to you, Gordon Lightfoot!
I was at his last show on the 30th of October. Row 4, dead centre, my brother was with me, and we were only 15 & 17 at the time, when Gord came on stage and saw us, he just gave us a smile, I’ll remember that till the day I die, and I’m forever grateful that I was able to see one of my heros play live, at his very last show.
Whoa. Very lucky. My mother-in-law saw Elvis just a year or two before his death. She was only 17. Your story really reminds me of that.
From the time I purchased my first album (Don Quixote 1972) to when I was finally able to see him live (Kravis Center, West Palm Beach 1999) the musical journey you paved for us will always create a beautiful reflective state of mind that we will always treasure. I knew at ten yrs old, as I sat in our towns new library and listened to his records with headphones on, I knew he was an amazing & universal voice in music. A gifted story teller extraordinare . As a child I understood. I most certainly still do 👏

His musical style was original. You could not really label it; it wasn't folk or country or pop, it was just his own. R.I.P. Gordon, you were a treasure, an icon. You may be gone, but your music will live on forever.
I have been familiar with Gordon Lightfoot's songs for many years, but only became aware they belonged to him about two years ago. They have made up some of my absolute favourites on my playlist for the past two years, and for some reason I have been listening to them constantly. They are so incredibly beautiful and always make me feel great, and tug at my heartstrings. So sad to hear of his passing recently, and how wonderful that he left behind all this amazing music that we will continue to enjoy for the rest of our lives. My favourites are Sundown and If You Could Read My Mind.
I was born in '65. Gordon Lightfoot was on the radio during the happiest years of my life. He will live on in my heart until I take my last breath. Rest in Peace Gordon and thank you for everything.
I met Gordon Lightfoot when I was stationed at Reese AFB, TX in 1982. He came down to ride in a T-38 trainer and there was a meet and greet after that. I don't think that he was aware of people waiting to see him, but he was very gracious and I still have his autograph on his latest album at the time "Shadows." What a great talent : )
Gordon Lightfoot will remain my favorite artist of all time. I think that I only lacked 3 or 4 of his albums and certainly saw his superb concert performances. However, his death really didn't come as a surprise to me. Time and poor health were wearing him down... and the young and powerful master was no more. Sadly, I believe he should have stopped touring several years ago. He simply needed to rest on his laurels.

It's like the world has lost a family member. I know he was a Canadian treasure but he was more than that. Gordon Lightfoot was a GEM to the WORLD!! Thank you Canada for sharing him with us, we'll cherish him along with you for EVER!....
A thousand years from now people will still be listening to the many timeless songs from Gordon. Although he is Canadian, his music profoundly touched the world. His lead guitarist is an incredible musician who brought forth the classical influenced melodies that will live in the hearts of countless millions forever.

It's hard to believe that some of his songs are over 50 years old. But they are as beautiful and awe-inspiring as when I first heard them in the 70's. Thank you Gordon for sharing a bit of the Canada that you loved and for all the joy you gave me. From an Aussie fan.

I have loved Gordon Lighfoot's music for decades. I'm happy to say I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert twice at Massey Hall in Toronto and twice in Calgary. A Canadian Icon for sure!
This really hurts. I grew up on "Sundown".
I'm going to try to write some songs about him and his influence on me.
There were four big influences on my songwriting growing up (I think four):
Hank Williams. Waylon Jennings. Willie Nelson.
And Gordon Lightfoot.
I saw him in 1987 at the Stein Valley Music Festival and it will always go down as one of my top musical experiences. I was blown away with how beautiful and poetic his music was live. RIP Gordon

Loved Gordon Lightfoot all my life; his music was always so wonderful and so soothing, when you needed it to be. So sorry to hear of his passing, but so glad that he gave the world his talents for 84 years, what a wonderful long life he had. He was a great Canadian and one to be proud of. (from Sandi)

I found out that Gordon & his band had a concert near where I live here in Washington State about 12 years ago so I told my co-worker that he was playing here, he and his wife got tickets to see the show. My co-worker's wife was as giddy as a kitty after seeing him in concert. To this day I still listen to his music, sorry I couldn't go to the show..... RIP Gordon!!

Your neighbor next door in Michigan will miss him terribly...he was a real talent, right up there eye to eye with James Taylor and the other singer songwriters of his generation rest. I always thought he was so much MORE than just the overplayed Edmund Fitzgerald song....Early Morning Rain, For Lovin' Me, If You Could Read My Mind [probably his best], Daylight Katy, Minstrel of the Dawn, Carefree Highway [I always loved that one], Rainy Day People, Sundown, just brilliant timeless songs.
A Canadian treasure and gift to us all. He always made great music, but it took years to realize just how brilliant it truly is. He helped shine the spotlight on an amazing country and it's incredible music industry.

As someone growing up near lakeshore of lake Erie, I have always been fascinated with great lakes ports, their history and shipping industry's history. So I probably don't need to mention, my first introduction to Gordon Lightfoot was when studying the wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald, over the years I realized that he was much more than that, but that was my introduction. RIP Mr. Lightfoot, and thank you.🇨🇦

I was born and raised in the Southern US, and we had legends of our own, but Gordon fit right in with them. Elvis and Johnny Cash loved him, and covered his songs. RIP.

Painted many observations over the years. Canadian railroad trilogy was large part of national coming out parties of 1967. Made it okay for another Gordon to become tragically hip. Once had largest divorce settlement in Canadian history yet still managed to entertain from his home in the bridal path during covid lockdown.

He was wonderful. I got the sense that Gordon was one of the most sincere of the singer songwriters.
i had his 45's when i was little and played on my little phonograph. what is ironic and touching is i started playing oldies on utube couple months ago and his were some i played and smiled too.
As the interview continued with Gordon about being reflective, he talks humbly about things done that have had him in “a state of repentance for a long time. “ It was such an important part of who he was in his later years. I wish that part didn’t get edited out of so many of these tributes. Glad he that God reconnect because I asked the Lord to put all the great musicians on my block when I get to heaven. He was the man that multiplied his talents and weren’t they a gift-the voice, the lyrics, the musicality.” 🕊

Mr Lightfoot, had the voice that resonated with the everyday common man, his story telling, made you feel like you were right there in the midst of the song. His passing touches my heart, like few others have, because i came of age to hits like sundown and rainy day people and of course the wreck of the edmund friztgerald, RIP gordon, welcome home my good an faithful servant

Years ago, maybe 7, he had to cancel a show but rescheduled it a few months later. Gordon Lightfoot gave a great show even though it was obvious he was not well. His songs live on in musical history.

The Mariners’ Church of Detroit (A.K.A. “Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral,”) rang it's bell 30 times on Tuesday, 29 for the crew of The Edmund Fitzgerald and once more for Gordon. It is likely they will add a chime for him in their Great Lakes Memorial come November.
Sundown was one of my favorites.

I first heard "If you Could Read my Mind" when I was a child too young to understand the meaning of the lyrics. Even then I could recognize though that it was a masterpiece.
