Just me from a year ago being AWESTRUCK by Tears of the Kingdom. (That's it. That's the video.)

  • Okay, this is a slightly off-brand video calling back to the launch of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While I usually focus on forecasting and analysis, I also think there's space now and then just to sit back and be wowed. I've been sitting on this video for a year and it still makes me smile. It's easy when looking back with a critical eye to forget the sheer joy of something new. If this video isn't for you, I have some major deep-dive videos coming very soon but otherwise re-experience Tears of the Kingdom. #happytears

“So often we’re caught up in speculation about the future or obsession about the past that we can forget the inestimable magic of when a truly wonderful new game experience captures you.” This video may not receive as much attention as your other more timely ones. However, the reason we even care this much to begin with is because these franchises have touched our hearts or even shaped our character.

Tears of the Kingdom is to Breath of the Wild as Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy.
I personally enjoyed Tears more, but Breath was definitely more impactful.

      Kind of.
The systems in Tears of the Kingdom are a huge leap compared to the system changes in Galaxy 2.
Being able to seamlessly create constructs in the over world and the components being able to be put together in pretty much any way imaginable as long as there is direct contact doesn't sound like a big deal but it really is, the programming behind that and Fuse is something I can't even imagine how it functions as well as it does, specially in a device with the power the Switch has.
Yes pretty much all the elements that were present in BotW were perfected and improved, but on top of that, the new systems added would have been enough to do entire games around those systems.

@@imatiu And just think of how insane recall is. On top of everything else the game is already handling, every interactable object in a certain radius of you is constantly recording the last 20 seconds or so of changes that has happened to it on the limited memory of the the switch. HOW?

While I do think there are a few small but notable flaws with Tears (mostly to do with the main questline), it is still an example of iterative gameplay at its absolute pinnacle.

It's a shame that Tears of the Kingdom had to follow up Breath of the Wild, it would be such an unimaginably amazing game if the world was something totally new for you to explore. Also, I'm not sure what the 100% completion armour is hitting at, but I'm not sure if I like what it means for the future of the franchise. I'm in the weird position of knowing that TotK is a strictly better game than BotW in so many amazing ways but at the same time knowing that BotW still is the best gaming experience I've ever had.
Thank you for posting this video, I appreciate the purity and the enthusiasm. God bless you, brother.

they could do a cool compilation (hopefully) years from now that naturally sews the 2 games together, perhaps with a little extra content in between the 2 for a more natural flow? I think that would be super neat and would be a cool way to play the games in a whole new way after all that time!

I shared so many of your feelings when i played the game as well. Mainline Zelda games truly are meant to be savored, and Tears did not disappoint. Seeing a video like this once in a while is nice, so dont hesitate to share. Although obviously unlikely to gain as much traction as if published when the game came out, this look back at a reaction is both enjoyable and insightful as its clearly genuine.

This game really is something special, the story is beautiful and heartbreaking, the gameplay is innovative and fun, but I think the biggest thing for me that I will always remember is how much of a technical achievement it is, the fact that Nintendo not only introduced two entirely new areas alongside new stuff to do on the ground of Hyrule, but also made the transition between those areas so incredibly seamless will always baffle me for the hardware it’s running on. Happy 1st Birthday to TOTK!

What a fun look back! I’ve spent well over 1200 hours in the game and beaten it 8 times. Sometimes I replay without beating it, though, because, as for BotW, my favourite parts are early to mid-game and it takes just a little bit too much mental energy to prepare for the final boss.
I’m in the middle of a randomised run now that I might beat, but to be honest, I’m always trying to find other games that feel worth dragging myself away from TotK. I’ve tried several other older Zelda games, though mostly 2-D. Wind Waker was the only 3-D one I’d tried and it just didn’t click for me, even though I adore the art style and characters. But recently, I picked up Skyward Sword and it clicked with me. The most linear Zelda. Hopefully, completing this will make Wind Waker click with me, too.
I was never a gamer and am a little too old to pick up the skills easily, but Zelda really does have some kind of magic, and even the games I don’t enjoy playing myself have been fun to watch others play. I hope Nintendo continues to love making Zelda games, because as long as they do, I’m sure I will continue to gain great joy from them.

I’m looking forward to my second playthrough, currently on BotW again and despite 500hrs spent on my first game, having TotK’s Hyrule colour my memories has made exploring BotW’s Hyrule again fresh enough to not know exactly what’s round the next corner.

I am not a fan of either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. They feel so empty and boring to me. I wasted over 140 hours of my life trying to find the fun in Breath of the Wild. It's easy to lose time in these games, but it is hard for me to enjoy them. I have been playing Zelda games since the NES. I absolutely love finding an item that has multiple uses and opens the world up to me more. That system feels very rewarding compared to korok seed, spirit orbs, and weapons that break every few seconds. I confess, for a good part of my play through of Breath of the Wild, I felt confident there had to be a way to repair weapons. There just had to be a place where I could forge weapons, strengthen weapons, and most assuredly, there had to be special weapons that didn't break... right? Well, now we all know that those assumptions were faulty. I can't take back the time I lost to Breath of the Wild, but I don't have to lose more time to Tears of the Kingdom either. I will not be buying Tears of the Kingdom or any Open-air Zelda's like Breath of the Wild.
I miss traditional Zelda, and I am truly scared that Nintendo will never make another traditional Zelda. Why would they, Eiji Aonuma doesn't want to make traditional Zelda anymore, and Open-air Zelda makes tons of money. Sadly, at this point, I fear my only hope to see a new traditional Zelda is if a third-party developer like Capcom requests to make a traditional Zelda. Boy, those Oracle games were great! Thankfully, I have 26 years' worth of amazing Zelda titles I can play, and the indie scene just keeps getting better.

Sorry bro. Maybe they'll make a game that meshes the beat parts of both formulas. I'm a modern Zelda fan, but it would be awesome for as many as possible to enjoy the new games. Aonuma did say that the next game will not take the exact same direction as BotW and TotK.

TOTK is one of my least favorite zelda games and it's made me generally lose interest in the series' future. I really liked BOTW, but between recycled content, throttled hardware and a doubling down on shortcomings instead of improving them, I couldn't get behind this new one.

    • @mkjjoe
      @mkjjoe Před 26 dny

@@chunkymonkey7983 We always go back to that point and ultimately it's up for appreciation. But the issue many of us had was that just because it adds something doesn't mean it's an improvement. By design the pure discovery of an entirely new world isn't there, the sky and depths are cool but much more shallow. Changes on the surface are cool but don't change that I know the map like the back of my hand (some people blame that I played "too much" but that's a price of success, not my fault BOTW was so good). Temples have a cool approach/theme/boss but puzzles are fundamentally like Divine Beasts minus the ability to move them. Sage abilities are just overall clunkier than Champion abilities. Core mechanics are much more impressive though UI can kill the flow. And while BOTW had minimal non-lineary story telling, the exploration, themes and actual events all worked together. TOTK tells something much more epic and involves more important characters but it didn't get all the progression it deserved to guarantee that big moments build up in the best possible way, as the game still pushed non-linearity at all costs (except when it oddly didn't for secondary things that totally could be non-linear).
