- In this episode I show you two great jazz hi-hat fills, I like to call them "hat tricks". One is a piece of vocabulary from the great Tony Williams on the Miles Davis album "Four and More", while the other is a Philly Joe Jones lick from Hank Mobley's "No Room for Squares". Get your hi-hat together with these two great fills.

Chris you have no idea how happy I am to have discovered your Chanel, I love your content.
Very cool hi hat licks. As usual, a crystal clear demonstration and explanation. Thanks Chris.

Nice work man!
Thanks!
Discovered your channel today: great videos, thanks a lot. Would love to get a Magma/Christian Vander episode sometime!
Great lesson! Now im curious on what the other mount rushmore recordings are! :)
Hey Chris! Could you do an episode where you talk about that snare fill Philly makes during "No Room for Squares" at around 0:27. He plays this fast thing in his left hand while playing the swing pattern in his right hand
Sorry for such a delay! At that moment Philly Joe plays straight 8th notes with his left hand and it feels so out of the blue compared to his swing in his ride, along with the swing in the whole ensemble. But that's what it is, basically 2 bars of straight 8ths against his swinging ride cymbal beat!
Great lesson. Thank you. I'm curious: what ride cymbal are you playing in this video?
20" Paiste Masters Dark Ride
... and Roy Haynes?...
Oh yes of course. I should have said that or added Roy! Roy probably does it more than anyone. But I was stuck on these two examples. Got to do a whole Roy episode to make up for it!
Yeah I agree, Roy on hats all the way. Please do a little something on your favorite snap/crackle phrases.
