  • This video is on “Distillation Column Troubleshooting Part 1 ” The target audience for this course is working chemical and process engineers.
Distillation column is one of the critical process equipment in refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing plants and chemical plants. The performance of the plants depends on the ability of the distillation columns to function as intended. A distillation process running steady and delivering performance as per design can get upset by varieties of reasons. The consequence of these upsets depends on the nature and the intensity of problems. Such disturbances may lead to variations in finished product quality or reduction in capacity. Identifying the reasons for the problems and taking timely corrective and preventive action to reduce loss of production needs operational experience and engineering skills.
Problems in distillation column can be categorized into two kinds - Operation related and Hydraulic related. Hence the subject is covered in two parts. Distillation Column Troubleshooting Part 1 focuses on troubleshooting of the operation related problems. Watch the video to know more

What are the key parameters to be monitored to increase maximum feed in column to avoid damage in column

The operating parameters to be monitored when you are making an attempt to push the load to maximum, that is beyond the rated capacity are pressure drop across the column and column bottom level. Plot the pressure drop in rectification section and stripping section versus vapour rate separately. What is important is the rate of rise in pressure drop against the change in vapour rate. If the rate of change is as before when the column was operating within rated capacity, the column hydraulic is ok. If the rate of increase of pressure drop is steeper, then you have reason to worry. The column is beginning to flood. You have reached the maximum capacity of the column. Continued operation in flooded condition will lead to tray damage.
Other parameters to be watched are column bottom level, distillate and bottom product composition during this exercise. A decreasing level in column bottom will indicate the liquid is accumulating on the trays. The column is flooding.
