  • Micheal Martin, the Irish Prime Minister, says that the UK policy of sending some people claiming asylum to Rwanda is at least part of the reason for a surge in arrivals in his country.
Public accommodation in Ireland said to be full, with temporary facilities being built at speed on public land.
Sky News' Stephen Murphy has the story.

Just awful what is happening to Ireland. Uncapped , free for all immigration while the Irish have no where left to rent or buy an affordable house. Free homes handed to those entering from foreign lands while the native irish are put on housing lists or simply leave. It's sickening to see this happen !

Complete and utter political con job. Typical nasty political manoeuvre. There is no Rwanda policy. Not one migrant has gone. The plan is dead. The migrants are totally undeterred by this Rwandan policy. The leaders are just using it as an excuse to justify the large migrant numbers. They are trolling their own people. Ireland is under the exact same u.n. charter on free migration that most of the West is. The Irish government knows it can't do anything to ease the pressure so they spun a lie that suddenly they are,all going to Ireland because of this fantasy policy which hasn't even put one person on a flight list.

A major factor is that the Republic is struggling under a spectacular housing and homelessness crisis at the moment, so there isn't the housing and accomodation stock available to release the pressure, and support such people.
A government report last week underscored that there's a demographic ticking time bomb at play - more than 20% of people working away now do not own their own home, with no prospect of ever owning a home (I'm one of them), and with no means to meet rent payments when they retire - so in 10 or 20 years, tens of thousands -and then hundreds of thousands - of people in Ireland will finish their working lives, and have no way whatsoever to afford renting anywhere to live.
    So then what?
Against this backdrop, and the spectacular housing shortage, there aren't empty houses or hotels etc to send refugees to, who also have complex needs beyond simply a roof over their heads.
It's an issue, but I hope the government can find solutions to help those poor people.
