Billy Harper recorded the very first recording for the Black Saint label. Suitably, the album was called Black Saint. This recording preceded that record by two years. It was released on the Strata East label and is still considered one of the most important records of the Black Conciousness movement. Billy Harper was heavily influenced by John Coltrane without being completely tied to Trane's style (sound-and-fury-ron.blogspot, 2010).
