    Script:
    This is a state by state look at how immigration to America has changed over time.
    In 1850, the vast majority of newcomers were from Ireland and Germany.
    In the 1860’s the labor shortages during the Civil War created strong demand for immigrant labor, nearly doubling the foreign born population in a decade.
    1870 saw Mexico become the top country of origin in much of the Southwest, while British immigrants preferred the rocky mountain territories.
    The 1880 census showed that the Chinese were coming in large numbers. Many took dangerous jobs in the mines or on railroad building crews. For the next century immigrants from Canada crossing the southern border would be the largest group settling in many of the northernmost American states.
    In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act blocked the arrival of large numbers of Asian immigrants for much of the next century. Unfortunately the overall microdata for the 1890 census were destroyed in a 1921 fire at the Department of Commerce.
    So fast-forward to 1900, the turn of the century, when the territorial boundaries of the continental United States were settled. For the first time Norwegians, Swedes, and Italians were the largest groups coming to South Dakota, Minnesota and Louisiana, respectively.
    1910 shows us how quickly things can change, with large numbers of Russians and Italians arriving, the only state where Ireland was the top country of origin was tiny Delaware.
    With the American population exceeded 100 million in the 1920 census, there were equal numbers of German, Italian, and Russian born immigrants. Many had fled Europe to escape the horrors of World War I.
    By 1930 the industrial revolution was in full swing, and the country was growing rapidly from within, so the percent of foreign born fell. And, for the first time since 1850, Mexico was the dominant country of origin for new arrivals to California.
    By 1940, the quotas and other congressional measures passed in the previous decade to restrict immigration sharply cut the foreign born population to below 9%.
    1950 saw the effects of the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, as Chinese immigrants were finally welcomed back. Greeks were the largest group arriving in South Carolina.
    When Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, the year before the 1960 census, Canadians simply crossed the border to immigrate to The Last Frontier, but Filipinos crossed an entire ocean to become The Aloha State’s largest group.
    By 1970, the percentage of foreign born reached an all-time low. And with immigrants arriving from a wider range of countries, Italy was the only nation that had sent more than a million people.
    In 1980, after Congress began granting more visas to people from the Western Hemisphere, the number of states where Mexico was the top country of origin doubled in a decade, becoming the dominant foreign born population in the entire country.
    And in 1990 America began to look like the diverse country we live in today. Mexico was tops in 18 states, Dominicans were the largest group coming to New York, and South Korea and Southeast Asian nations were the leading countries of origin in seven states.
    In the year 2000 census the number of Mexican-born immigrants surpassed nine million. It’s also notable that India was the top country of origin in three states.
    And the 2010 census reveals exactly why America is quickly becoming so diverse: only five states - all of them bordering Canada - received the most immigrants from a majority white country.

      When I was born (US, 1959) diversity and inclusive meant honoring people from "all" nations in this country, be they originally from Croatia, Czechoslovakia or Canada. That has changed and expanded beyond white Europe; and remember, Irish & Italian immigrants were once as reviled and feared as the Syrian and Pakistani ons are today are today.
      People always feel a need to have someone to look down on so they can feel better about themselves. All that changes are the reviled people's origins.

      @edwrites Před 6 lety +13

      In my state everyone is not almost all Mexican. Neither in my bordering neighboring states. The “whites” are not just “whites” they are European and in the states surrounding my state of residence they are the majority although they derive from different nationalities- Canadian, Italian, Irish, Swedish, French, German, etc. I could go on and on. Mexicans are expanding at a faster rate and the map shows this within minorities not majorities. Let us not forget about African countries as well. Somalia, Nigeria, Ghana, Eritrea (barely became independent in ‘92, ), Ethiopia and many more. Also, people from what we were taught to be Asia, Laos, Vietnam, China, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines etc. It looks pretty diverse to me in inclusion of nationalities, but not plentiful in terms of numbers because they are minorities after all. The diversity is being acknowledged in the video because at first it was diverse but only between people of European ancestry and then the diversity grew exponentially to include different continents.
      That is my interpretation, but in social studies we were always taught to be cautious with maps that could be misleading. I think you are interpreting the Mexican shaded states as Mexicans being the majority within each state which is untrue. They may be the majority of minorities, but even then another minority may be behind the Mexican minority by a few million, but they are still present and growing along with Mexican minority.

Treating all these western Europeans as completely different people despite how they're basically the same culture only chronicles our Eurocentrism as we ignorantly generalize all Mexicans as "Mexican" while giving ourselves 15 different boxes for white people.

People are trying to escape the violence and poverty. Even spending a solid week crossing the desert to face millions of Trump supporters for minimum wage or lower is better than staying in Mexico for many people, and when you're that poor and desperate, it's impossible to go legally.

You had all these people from the massive pot that is Europe, with hundreds of ethnicities and separate cultures, all coming and being brought to the US. Just Mexico and only Mexico will effectively replace everything and will inadvertently mean the US is less diverse. In 2050 Latinos are projected to become the majority of the nation. If the United States is majority Hispanic all coming from one country, does that really quantify as “diverse”?

I went to school and was asked to fill forms out describing our ethnicity. We as children were told to select white as our nationality. I am brown. I knew that I am not white and mentioned that to my teach who said that I have to mark white as my nationality because I was white. So much confusion there for me being so young. My parents did not understand this either but were told that this was fact. Now I am hearing that this was to make it as if there were more white people in the USA.

      Frank Davis I think YOU missed the point. A room full of Mexican citizens will have one thing in common: they will all be citizens of Mexico. In that sense, they will be all the same. But diversity isn't just about what passport you hold. America is far more than diverse than Japan, by far, and it's not because we have a lot of people who are not US citizens living here and Japan has less Japanese nationals living there.
      You dig?

    • @Itsa_Me_Franman
      @Itsa_Me_Franman Před 7 lety +39

      I actually don't understand your logic. I just don't think that if we had nothing but German immigrants here people would be calling it diverse. Diversity to me it doesn't mean the color of your skin. It simply means different kinds of people. So if you look at the earlier Maps there was a mix of Mexican Irish Italian Chinese and Greek. That to me is diverse. If the map was all Chinese it would not be diverse. If it was all Mexican it would not be diverse. If it was all Greek it would not be diverse. Perhaps we are stuck on the definition of diversity, " the states of being diverse; variety".
      I think people maybe use diversity to describe a crowd that is not all white. I believe that's the context that he was using in the video. About if the video were about different professions of people coming here and the majority was Mexican but you had labourers doctors lawyers engineers stuff like that, then yes diverse. But the video was about immigration by country.

As I know that California gets many inmigrantes from Southern Mexico, meanwhile Texas historically had immigrant from Northeast Mexico. MrMetalHead1100 Mexican is not a race, it's a nationality. There are white, mixed (the majority of Mexicans), native (brown), black and Asian Mexicans. The ones who come over to the states are usually the Mexicans with more native descent because usually lighter skin/white Mexicans have a much better lives in Mexico. There is still somewhat racism in Mexican society. But when Americans think about Mexicans, they think all of them are brown because those are the only ones who want to come to the US.

      thank you for the lesson, but I was commenting on the guys definition of the word diversity. Its a little irritating that some people seem to think that diversity is basically the lack of white people. I grew up in a neighborhood that was mostly black and hispanic, and I can tell you, alot of people I knew in school thought that way, and it was frustrating. Thats the kind of thinking that makes so many white people defensive when it comes to immigration.

      I think he meant that since there were so many Mexican people, they were actually able to create a visible and important change the ethnic demographics of the country. Hispanics in general have become the second largest ethnicity in the United States. So while there were many immigrants beforehand that were from other countries, there were comparatively small minorities. For example, Norwegian people immigrated to the United States it is true that there was more diversity. Diversity in ethnicity, language and culture for example. However, they didn't immigrate enough to cause a major and important demographic shift in the US. To embellish this example, Norwegian was not an important enough demographic for there to be a push for many Americans to learn Norwegian in High school. They are there but they aren't that many for them. So there is diversity but its overall impact is small compared to the broader Anglo-Saxon, and German majority. The Hispanic population and impact on diversity is not small by comparison. So because there are more Hispanic people there is more diversity.
