I retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 2021 their mandatory overtime (daily) made me retire as soon as I was eligible.
So is it even worth to enter that career field.
@@geraldacevedo2003 Working for the BOP can involve working a lot of hours under sometimes stressful conditions. Line staff can potentially earn more than middle management and above if they’re willing to work overtime.
I also work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In today's environment it's I make 140-150K a year due to mandatory(mandates) overtime. This analogy may be offensive to some but imagine if someone put you into a cage with a hungry lion. Would you be stressed, yes you would. We house some of the worst human beings to ever roam this planet all while being villafied by the media and public thinking we abuse inmates on the daily. We deal with people that will bash you on the head with a bolder and hide their hands claiming they did nothing wrong. America better be careful pretty soon there will be no place to put criminals because there will be no one left wanting to work in our Prisons. While I do understand some don't belong in prisons there are many that do

@@geraldacevedo2003I work for the BOP. Good money, but you will work at least 60 hours a week if you are a corrections officer. I clear over 100k a year easily.
It must be a depressing crappy job.
Who wouldn't want to work with the worst of society? The low pay and high risk is surely worth it. 🤣 I'd rather work in a cemetery before working at a prison.
I was a c/o for 16 years. I was making well over 100k a year. Mandatory Over time used to be a every 3 or 4 months deal. Now its 16 hours every day almost. Morale is down because of who gets promoted and the practices they impose. My department was losing officers left and right, but they didn't leave the profession, just the department.
My career ended due to the staffing shortage. They had us, one officer per housing unit. I went to break another officer for lunch. I just logged in on terminal an was attacked by inmate who shouldn't have been classified to that unit. In the end my injuries were bad enough that the county doctor want to retire me. What dose the county do instead? They fired me, still fighting for my pension 8 months later.

Leads make like 40k a year
A manager could make like 50-70k, but they almost always need a degree
The equivalent in corrections with a degree and experience would be making over 100k
@@dylan8927 uh no, not in most places. In rikers island, a correctional officer makes up to $92k a year before overtime after 5 years of service. And all he needs is 39 college credit (something that should be dropped honestly). In Suffolk County NY, a correctional officer makes up to $124,000 after 11 years of service and he needs a highschool diploma. In Nassau County NY, a correctional officer makes up to $98,000 and he needs a highschool diploma. To rank up, most likely you need a degree but regular correctional officers make bank if they stay long in this job.

I work for Federal Corrections in Canada. A CX1 starts at more than $70,000 base pay, but we are taxed to death. Also with the housing and cost of living crisis the standard of living is shrinking rapidly. We are also having trouble filling our ranks.

The salaries quoted are base pay…most prisons you write your own check by working overtime.

Having so much mandatory overtime that everyone is a walking zombie is bad for morale and for security.
Most CO's quit because of bad supervisors.
If you're anything like me, its about the job security, I left after a year of working at a Maximum Security, its not the job that bothered me, I worked 12-16 on my days on and constantly got called in on my days off, on fathers day only 13 officers showed up for a prison of 2700 inmates , and the co workers were stressed out as well, what bothered me the most was the last minute no relief you gotta do 16 today, thats what put the icing on the cake for me
It's been this way since I worked there in 1979.
Would do back to back to back 16hr shifts as well as working weekends and holidays in Federal Law Enforcement. I quit and never looked back and I am now enjoying my 8-4:30 job with my weekends off. Nobody should be made to work forced overtime.
I'll tell you why. I worked at the state level DOC and tried to work at the federal level as well. Pay was good but you earned that money working 12-16 hour shifts and then I was cool until I was put on night shift and they didn't give a damn about my health, sleep or lack thereof. Not to mention alot of treatment to actual officers is very racially motivated. I had more problems with people wearing the same uniforms as me, than I did with the inmates. It's a very toxic environment but it's worse when you have problems with coworkers and leadership on the state and federal level. And the feds make it damn near impossible to get in especially when you wanna work
It's not hard to ger on with the Feds. Just pay your bills, don't have anything in collection, and have a clean record.
@thetruthhurts131 I do have all of that. The federal prison near me, let's just say they wanna keep everything white in there besides inmates. Trust me the staff and my "interview" made that very clear. I didn't get hired by them and they still need bodies in their but they were just affected by the recent government lockdown. I work at the VA hospital and we're protected against lockdowns and i work 40 hours, no crazy OT.......I'm straight where I am.
Here's an idea, decriminalize non-violent drug offenses, then you will have less prisoners to deal with. Yet the prison industry continually promotes legislation that criminalizes non-violent drug use
Lmao the days of heavy handed drug sentencings are over. Unless someone has an egregious amounts of drugs its rare they ever serve actual time. The vast majority of the clueless public doesn't know many of the current day drug offenders in prison are in for other reason such as gun enhancements or violence in commission of possession of drugs.

The upper management just wouldn’t have you relieved and you would be stuck for another shift. At least every other day. I was a Sergeant with 7 years when I left at 27 years old.
Clothing allowance is 700 NOT 400, it was 400 back in 2007, but went up to 600 and last year to 700

California pays one of the highest wages in the nation and we still can't fill the ranks. Nobody wants to work I guess.
