As someone who recently saw Lea in Funny Girl on Broadway from center orchestra, I'll just say that this cover is good, edging on great, but Lea's rendition now is magnificent. Her voice and acting have matured so much. As Kurt always said, "she may be difficult, but boy can she sing." She got multiple standing ovations before intermission.
mercedes was originally doing the solo but their setlist got stolen so they had to do something quick and rachel was the only one with something fully prepared so she had to do the solo. but i agree, it is always only rachel ( aside from santana once ) who does the solos. literally 😭

They literally explain in the episode that the set list was stolen so they had to create a show last minute, so they choreographed one group number and gave Rachel a solo because they knew she didn't need to rehearse it...
I wish youd react to some of the videos of her singing live. Theres lots of great ones from the LMDC tour (with darren) and her own tours. This song included. Those videos are more representative of Lea singing naturally than the glee recordings where shes singing as Rachel.

They had their song selections stolen by Sue .. and so they had to come up with this one their own Mr Schue wasn’t there so Finn took the lead and they followed up the Funny Girl song with a group number . They gave Rachel the song because they knew she could nail it little rehearsal
I liked Naya’s version better….. the whole package, she was so underrated on this show. Santana’s voice was thicker, fuller, more resonant and just as show stopping as Lea. Lea is good but her Rachel Berry voice seems almost shrill sometimes. Naya was just amazing.
There are typically three songs in a competition like this, one of them is a solo (usually Rachel) or Duet (Usually Rachel and Finn but once was Quinn and Sam). Also, this performances was done on fit fly when Sue gave their set list to the competing groups and they were third so they had like an hour to come up with a totally new set list.
On Glee, the competition were always divided into a solo/duet number and then the group number. I truly don’t know how it’s on a real show choir competition though. PS. Please react to more Lea (and not only on Glee!)
I've had the pleasure of listening to her sing this live many times and each time is AMAZING!!! You should listen to DROMP from her Christmas show! That has by far been her best! She sang My Man recently in her last three shows which I know is not in the musical but my god! HER VOCALS!

I've sung this dozens and dozens of times with instrumental tracks from both the film and from Glee, and they're the same amount of bars lol. I even checked youtube videos of both, and it's the same. I think the video you were watching might have been slightly sped up, maybe that's why it seemed shorter? (It might also be why Rachel's voice sounds slightly higher pitched than usual)
@@CP-mb3sn That would be even weirder, considering the only thing they actually cut out of this version is a small instrumental section right before the end that isn't included on any of the performance tracks and would have been super awkward at the climax of a live performance lol. I'm pretty sure she was talking about the note bc no one ever even mentions that instrumental section (it's just used while Fanny is getting on the tugboat lol) but I could be wrong.
i think the competition in the show has a category of a solo. they have 3 numbers to perform and 1 of the numbers need to be a solo, if i remember correctly.

I do agree with you that they should have done a bunch of harmonies and stuff. This was a show choir competition. Having a soloist do too much can lose points. Or they should have sang this in a competition that they lost.

To answer the question of why Rachel is doing a solo and why she’s only on stage and the rest aren’t yet is because in the show choir rules in the show they only have to have 12 members in 1 of the songs they perform registered, as long as they have at-least 12 members registered they can’t be disqualified for having solo acts
