Long time ago 😜 i think it was 3-4mm. You may also use two thinner wires side by side. Check the strengh of the branch before.
interesting you don't "clean" them up first before you wire. i have been told to clean then up then the shape will come to you. left a like
On most of my trees i clean up before. On the small spruces its to much work on the initial wiring. Thank you
Michael Bahr I thought the same thing. I cleaned up Alberta spruces prior and I don’t think they like it. I always have quite a bit of die off with the needles that are left. I will have to try wiring first and then letting them recover before progressing them and getting them looking nicer. Ahhhh, the patience required for bonsai

Spruce... ist das auf deutsch nicht die Zuckerhutfichte, sondern die Fichte allgemein? Ich habe eine Zuckerhutfichte von meiner Grossmutter gerettet, ein Weihnachtsgeschenk komplett mit Kugeln und Kunstschnee, hab sie mühsam sauber gefummelt und überlege als Bonsai interessierter aber nicht- wisser die ganze Zeit, was ich mit ihr machen soll...
Sie soll ja wesentlich empfindlicher sein als die gemeine Fichte.
Eine dramatische Form wie kaskade wäre wunderschön, aber damit käme ich wohl nicht weit.

Hallo, bereite seit letztem Jahr auch diese kleinen Weihnachtsbäume zu Bonsai vor, einer von dem ich mir am meisten versprach, ist für mich unerklärlich eingegangen, ein anderer wurde beim Waldspaziergang entdeckt, weil dort nach Weihnachten entsorgt. Dachte der wäre schon hinüber. Der entwickelt sich am besten. Wächst frei aufrecht, ohne Stammverbiegung. Siehe z.B. auch bei "Herons Bonsai" hier auf YT. LG, Klaus
