The Nymphalis Antiopa (aka the Camberwell Beauty) is a particularly rare species of Butterfly. Apparently, they like hanging out in Camberwell. Their first recorded sighting occurred here in 1748.
Camberwell is a district within the London Borough of Southwark, 3 miles from Charing Cross. The area is known for art study and display, the most prominent examples being the Camberwell College of Arts and neighbouring South London Gallery.
Each year, the long-running Camberwell Arts Festival takes place during the summer. It was part of the Parish of St Giles along with Peckham, Nunhead, some of Herne Hill and most of Dulwich.
There are various theories about the name Camber, but it is clear that the last syllable alludes to the clean, healing waters from the mineral springs and wells on the southern slope of Denmark Hill. "Treatment" was available from them by those forced out of the city if they became inflicted with a contagious disease like leprosy.
Rat Records has been a Camberwell draw for more than 15 years. They stock a rich variety and vinyl hunters queue outside it on Saturday mornings to get first dibs on that week’s 500 or so batch of new presses.
Archaeologists confirmed discovery of the original 2000+ year old Camber Well dug up from under a woman's garden lawn in 2009. 19th Century Ordinance Survey maps pinpointed its location as accurately as just two feet away from its original spot.
This little village green known as Camberwell Green has traditionally held an annual fair going back to the ancient period of the 13th century on this same spot. It rivalled that of Greenwich.
The Hill Bakery & Deli moved here from Deptford in 2015 from a guy who abandoned the corporate world of journalism to bake bread for his neighbours in Telegraph Hill. They use naturally leavened (aka sourdough) bread made with a wild yeast culture and proudly showcase other small-scale, local producers of craft beer from Brixton, pasta from Dulwich, jams and preserves from Hackney and cheese from Sussex. None of which you will find in any supermarket.
Denmark Hill, Maudsley Hospital and Ruskin Park were all named after prominent figures living nearby at their inception. Maudsley hospital, 1907, dates back to the foundation of Bethlem, or Bedlam Royal Hospital in 1247 as the first psychiatric institution on the planet. Liverpool Street railway terminus now covers over its original site.
Ruskin park also opened in 1907 to champion diverse green spaces. It stretches itself to Brixton and Herne Hill with facilities that include ponds, tennis and games courts, a kid's play area and paddling pool, formal gardens and a charming wooden bandstand. Most of these are dog free for the comfort and safety of children and their carers and to help protect the parks wildlife.
The park is useful to staff, patients and families travelling to and from King's College and Maudsley hospitals immediately adjacent as well as for exercise and escaping the pressures of ward life.

I loved this. I lived in Camberwell only for 5 years but I'll never forget them. It was a wonderful place. I lived in one of the high rises near Bowyer St. The neighbours were all wonderful. Once I locked myself out of my flat and this guy, huge fella, he busted it down and then repaired it for me! This was in the early 2000s.

Was raised here from 1976 to 1996. Back in those days it wasn't so gentrified, great pubs and cafe's though. I'm glad they cleaned up the Green, back when I lived there it was a dosser central and full of drunks. Used to drink in the Grove Tavern, The Silver Buckle, The Artichoke, The Hermits Cave, The British Lion and the Phoenix and Firkin. Great days I had there.

I lived in Camberwell in the 1960s just off Coldharbour Lane. I went through there a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t believe how much it had changed. I didn’t recognise where I used to live at first until I reoriented myself with the few places I did recognise. Also Walworth Road between Camberwell and Elephant and Castle has changed a lot. I didn’t recognise that at first either. Thanks for the video.

Hey DeWyne! Great series! I enjoy watching property/location type shows as I find them weirdly relaxing, and your "London travelogue" is a sleeper hit imo.
I especially like how you show regular streets that people _actually_ live on rather than end to end landmarks.
One thing- I caught the Mottingham episode on London Live the other day, and had to smash Shazam on that "Thaaaat way thaaaaat way thaaaaat way thaaaaaat way" (I call it!) riddim.
Found out the sample is from the Frightnrs, but I can't find your version on your bandcamp, would you please upload it here? It's 🔥!

I like this. Very much but it’s missing my favourite park, Myatts fields and could have touched on Burgess park? Another video opportunity perhaps. And I suppose there are so many different angles that you can focus on around Camberwell

  • @johanrijhkelaar3627
    @johanrijhkelaar3627 Před 3 lety +3

Camberwell was the first district I lived since I arrived in London, lived there in a room for about 6 months just around the Burgess Park, eventhough people say that’s a kind of rough area I never had any sorts of trouble during my time there, but the irony of things😂 a year after since I moved on I was working as a fibre operative , just in the estate where that hill bakery located where you can see the gate next to it, the company’s van which I drive had a problem with the filter so it got stuck in there for more than a day before a technique from AA came on Monday afternoon to solve the issue , nothing happened during night, the next Monday van was parked just in front of the bakery as they’re closed for that day, me and my mates continued to work, suddenly I went to the van to get a tool and some thief splashed the doors lateral window in plain daylight and took my bag ( only had food inside) as we work with fibres and electrical tools and we was inside the 2 block estate we couldn’t hear anything. There’s a pizzeria just metres away from the bakery with outside cameras but the angle couldn’t spot that part o the van which was broken, but nonetheless I’ll always have a fond memory of Camberwell as it was the first place where I lived as I was getting settled in London and I quite enjoyed it. Love your videos man, as I work for a fibre optic contractor company our work is 100% done outside so we get to work in various areas of London to get fibre to the housing estate and main roads as well, so I connect with your videos as I’ve had a taste of being in the area of most of them you had covered 😀
