One of the best scenes from the brilliant Father Ted. Tommy Tiernan makes a guest appearance as a suicidal priest whom Father Ted is trying to nurse back to mental health.
What's interesting is that for once Ted is, in a strange sort of way, doing his job as a priest by consoling a person in distress (despite not listening to a word he's saying).
@@cadieux.5741Ah well, as Father Liam Finnegan (the dancing priest) once said, "Prayer isn't the only way to praise God, and it keeps you fit as well."
Growing up watching Father Ted as a teen in the 90's, it feels weird now to be not far off the age Dermot Morgan was when he died. He left us way too soon and I'd imagine he'd have had an amazing career after Father Ted had he lived on. The fact that he died a day after recording this final episode has always stuck with me. He's up there in Craggy Heaven giving Father Jack some Dreamy Sleepy Nighty Snoozy Snooze to chill out.
Apparently when filming this scene, Tommy made a lot of mistakes, which required this scene to be filmed a couple of times, forcing Dermot Morgan to dance a lot. Considering that Dermot was not well and he died the day after filming from a massive heart attack, Tommy felt his mistakes and the constant retakes killed Dermot.
That's desperately sad to have been wracked with all that guilt. Highly unlikely to have been a cause, even if only indirectly. Tommy is a fantastic guy
Ardal O'Hanlon leaned over to Tommy at the funeral as the coffin was coming up the church and said 'You killed Father Ted', causing Tommy to burst out laughing.
The reason why the studio audience applaud Tommy at the end here at 2:50 was that he took so long to complete this scene, making mistakes, which made this short scene aged to film.
@@SneedEnthusiast In fact this was the day before he actually died from a heart attack. Yes, this is 100% true. This scene was part of the very last ever Father Ted episode. He recorded it on a Friday night, and he dropped dead of a massive heart attack at a dinner party at his home the following evening. That is scary! I remember it breaking on the news the following Sunday morning.
It’s funny the way Father Ted is so excited at the thought of going to America, along with everything it would involve, that though he’s keen to hear what Father Kevin has to say, Ted just simply can’t stay on task and give it his all. Heck he even puts on Shaft!
There's this band from Manchester who used to exist called The Smiths. Their lead singer is now an overly opinionated fascist pr1ck called (Stephen) Morrisey..... To be fair, Johnny Marr is a pretty fcuking brilliant guitar player...
Pauline McGlynn was beyond brilliant in the role of Mrs. Doyle. Everyone in the show is superb, but Pauline's transformation into that character is so complete that it becomes almost impossible to believe she was only in her early 30s or so when the show was on. She was so good that she's basically had to carefully work the rest of her career trying to get out from under the shadow of that performance.
'While filming the scene in which Ted dances to "Theme from Shaft", Tommy Tiernan continually flubbed his lines. As a result, Dermot Morgan was required to perform the dance repeatedly, despite pains in his heart. In a 2009 interview, Tiernan speculated that this contributed to Morgan's fatal heart attack the following day.' Feel quite sorry for Tiernan now, if he truly believes it was his fault then :(
@@sirprintalot also just realized my comment might be misinterpreted as an attack (you never know on the internet) so this is to assure you any disgruntlement is towards the director, not you.
Sad thing is the 90s were a much better and more optimistic time (apart from the whole mirror pension fund thing of course). Poor guy would be in an even worse state now with the state of the world! Anyway .. isn't "the long night of the soul" the name of a themed music evening? :P
Father Ted was one of the greatest comedies of all time.
R.I.P. Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly. ✝️
What's interesting is that for once Ted is, in a strange sort of way, doing his job as a priest by consoling a person in distress (despite not listening to a word he's saying).
Spot on! Such a perfect scene for his final appearance, he's accidentally done his job without even properly realising it.

😂
Read this in Ted's voice.

He managed to get over it, settled in Derry and had a lovely family. M.
The only issue being he has to suffer constant roasting from his father-in-law
