- MINI OS9 and its integration of CarPlay and Experience Modes is unlike anything we've see from MINI or an other automaker. We recently had a chance to go hands-on with the new operating system at the debut of the 2025 MINI Countryman JCW and found a lot to love along with a lot of new functionality not yet talked about. Watch above as we walk through it all and head to MotoringFile for an exclusive in-depth view on MINI's next generation cars.

Thank you for this video.
The experiences are strange. I understand them as “themes” but do not care for them changing functionality of the car, auto playing music, etc. If they’re customizable, great.
I don’t know what was ever wrong with a good ol drive mode selector. I feel strongly that drive mode and overall theme should be separate.
In my fiat500, the cluster TFT display (what I believe is one of the most under rated and unknown really good software gauges out there) subtly changes its font/character when in sport drive mode. It doesn’t scream “I’m a race car” it is just enough of a nice screen transition to allow the driver to know you’re in sport driving mode.
The “app” menu is too “on the nose” with resembling the app launcher of a galaxy model phone. Core functions such as HVAC shouldn’t be an “app” but rather something consistent in the UI and easy as ever living possible to get to, such as physical tactile knobs on the dash. Sure, Samsung has their hands on Harmon now (who makes this system) but that app launcher menu loses all of the fun menu navigation character of previous mini OS interface. The old interfaces were very interesting and almost sci-fi like without being gimmicky at all. The old interface gave you a glimpse of the next and previous menus to avoid making mistakes when searching for a function. Loved that. This new interface is a whole lot of love and hate.
Massage seat on a mini cooper. Oh how far we’ve come
It is a countryman barely a mini
@@ponderatulifyvent somewhere else
@@ponderatulifyit is also on the cooper, educate yourself
How do you change the temperature and radio while driving without crashing??
Tbf 90% of manufactures are doing this now 🤦
Voice commands!
Several near death experiences will teach you either using it blindly or on a stop
Couple of questions: Can you set the re-circulate air cabin to on all the time? I hate it in my current Mini where it closes the outside air but only for like 10 seconds and then it opens back up. I hate smelling the exhaust from other cars while driving my EV. 2nd question, is the J01 still not coming to the US until 2027?
Luckily native MINI Maps finally looks good because CarPlay got neutered hard. 9" screen with approximately a 5.5" square for CarPlay - that gets even smaller when a notification pops in - WTF were they thinking.
I fully understand circles are part of the brand (despite replacing nearly every circle with an rounded off rectangle) but circles are terrible for modern information display. Your video proves it with CarPlay and any other "windowed" type content. Some peoples phones can literally show more information.
Common misconception: The adaptive suspension is NOT sharper in Go-Kart Mode!
The dampers are *self-adapting*, but can't be adapted by chosing a drive mode.
This is the same for all current UKL2 platform cars: BMW X1 U11, BMW X2 U10, BMW 2 series Active Tourer U06 and the Mini Countryman U25.
I'm excited for it, looks, fresh, modern but not something that will feel outdated quickly, and responsive (particularly for pre-production software and firmware). Are the experiences customizable? Or, for example, are some of the settings tied only to the different experiences? I think the experiences are cool and all, but custom settings are where it's at (for all vehicles) in my opinion.
Yes they are to a point. However the Personal model is fully customizable.
@@MotoringFile Perfect, that’s what I wanted to hear!
@@davidc-l9174 it looks completely unsafe to use and total distraction while driving
@@ns4529 I disagree 🤷🏻♂️ There appears to be a logical layout, the most frequently used things (e.g., heated seats, temperature dials) are persistent no matter the screen and are easily accessible, even more so than the current physical dials that require you to look down to see/read, there’s still a physical volume knob, and I’m sure voice commands will allow users to access quite a bit as is common with modern vehicles.
@@davidc-l9174 USA does not have the personal model as of June 2024. Customizing is very limited, massage seats are only available with one of the experience modes.
The CarPlay makes those controls almost part of it. I love it. I wonder if MINI will get Apple's Next Gen CarPlay because of this alone.
I hope so. Apple was supposed to announce supporting brands at the end of 2023 and that didn't happen. (Nor have they updated the site for it.)
Do you know if CarPlay works with the heads-up display now like Navigation?
We can confirm that Apple Maps does. Not sure about other mapping apps.
@@MotoringFile thank you.
While in all these different modes, were is the speed, engine speed, and gear position info?
looks like there is a heads up display on the windshield.
you can see it pop up at 6:51
This new dash is a joke. The new F66 is no longer a fun spray car. It's just a stepping stone to self driving cars. AMEN@@AlexanderJew
What does it look like when you have full navigation working but you have music playing and want to skip/change album etc… ?
The song shows to the left and is controlled by the steering wheel or by pressing the volume knob to the left or right.
@@MotoringFile what about when you want to switch an album/new artist? Do you need hide maps temporarily and then go into Apple Music or is there any sort of multitasking?
Would options be available for the fabric dashboard?
If not for the JCW, for the regular models. Aside from those already revealed..
I was thrilled when I saw the concept aceman's. It'd be sad if they only stick with these very inoffensive designs. 😬
Yes - you can see this on MotoringFile.com
I don’t like the squared CarPlay interface, especially for navigation via Google maps/map. For the full screen view you have to buy the mini navigation package and use it instead the phone..I think.
Pricing depends on the country. In some regions it'll be free.
I hear you say it is very quick just before the screen takes 4 hits with your finger to change the profile. The software is very laggy and will freeze if you touch it too many times or too quickly, that is from my ownership of this mini so far. I hope BMW will fix this soon, it is getting very tiresome.
Have you tried using this while driving? Seems too distracting.
Yes - can't talk about that until next week due to the embargo however.
Is the touch so laggy? Or is it the video?
This is pre-release software.
@@MotoringFile so it is that buggy… this is gonna be as buggy in the release too
the last version of the software we used in February was much quicker. Over the course of a day it had one app crash. Still not perfect but MINI told us that the final 1.0 would be released soon and should fix the issues. We haven’t it confirmed that however.
Lol, my 2024 jcw has os6, somehow jumped to os9 haha. Mini just been doing nothing for their customers for 10 years
They have infinite amount of space to fit a faster CPU, a faster VGA, more memory in a car versus a smartphone .... and still, the infotainment is laggy. Why???? Just buy the tech from any phone manufacturer, make a partnership with Apple, Samsung, etc.
It’s the fastest Snapdragon processor available. The issue is more about the pre-release software.
Too fast! Screens make no sense because you change the screen to often.
Ugly interior
Toggle switch was way better.
