I Flew on Hawaiian Airlines' Airbus A330!

  • Hawaiian Airlines operates 24 Airbus A330-200s for their long-haul flights across the Pacific, serving destinations as far away as Australia and the northeastern United States. They’re also used on busy routes to the west coast in conjunction with their smaller A321neos.
    Hawaiian has also been seen as one of the best domestic airlines in the U.S., offering what they call authentic Hawaiian hospitality on board.
    As the final stretch across the Pacific coming home from Japan, Hawaiian's A330 seemed like it was worth trying out!

    One of my old friends is a captain for Hawaiian. I’ve flown there with my adult children four times and, despite trying, my friend and I weren’t able to coordinate our schedules. But we finally did - on the eighth try - and he flew us from Honolulu to New York. We were “guests of the captain,” so we got a few perks. And his landing was incredibly smooth. Later that same day, I took him to a concert at Lincoln Center. Hawaiian really is a unique airline.

    Hawaiian Airlines is imo the best domestic airline. They have the best service, nice planes, and the only remaining domestic full service airline serving a meal and complementary alcohol. It's rare to see that here in America. Cant wait to fly on their 787-9 next year

    Having been born and raised in Hilo, I always flew Hawaiian on interisland flights. Now living in Bellevue for 30 years, HA is our carrier of choice when we visit the islands. It is wonderful to experience meal service in economy on Hawai`i - U.S. flights and trans Pacific flights, in addition to complimentary juice on interisland flights.

    Being a kid who grew up in the islands in the 2000s, I always liked flying Hawaiian because of their brand new 717s (though I did occasionally enjoy the engine view seat on Aloha's 737-200s)...their product isn't necessarily at the quality of airlines in alliances (especially on ground), but I do feel at home whenever I fly on their transpacific routes. Not to mention their impeccable safety record (for fatalities) since their founding.

    I'll be flying on this very jet and airline this October. For my 2 week 50th birthday trip to Honolulu. I'm going first class non stop from Boston Logan to Honolulu. Hopefully my 11hr journey will be well worth the money i paid for the ticket. However, i bet Hawaiian is regretting that 787 purchase now. Especially with all the issues Boeing has been going through as of late. I would have gone with the A350-900 or A330-NEO. Maybe it won't be to late for them to cancel their order or change a few to Airbus instead.

    Glad to see this Alex, we are are driving from New Brunswick to Boston and flying Hawaiian in March (BOS-HNL-SYD) and chose them over UA for two reasons. The first was the 2-4-2 of the A330 and the second was both legs are +/- 12hrs as opposed to having one of the legs 20hrs +. Currently booked in Main Cabin and mulling moving to Extra Comfort but they want $200USD per leg and I am not sure it is worth the extra. Neither of us are taller the 5' 10".

    • @wakeupcall2665
      @wakeupcall2665 Před 8 měsíci +1

      On the Airbus 330/340s series my favourite seats are at the back where the fuselage slims down towards the tail, and the 2-4-2 turns into 2-3-2, with the aisle getting wide and roomy. I am 5‘10‘‘ and I am sitting very comfortable there.
      The only downside to be considered is that you’re gonna be last at immigration.

    • @marcusdamberger
      @marcusdamberger Před 8 měsíci +1

      I must say the A330's 2-4-2 layout is superior to the 787's 3-3-3. I once flew with Thomas Cook Airlines on a A330 and had a row near the front next to one of the right side doors, I had extra leg room and was able to get up and walk straight ahead because of a gap they have between the next row of seats in front of the door that had room to the right side for door access I believe. It was awesome. I could stretch my legs, but I'm not tall, but it was nice. I don't know if any other airlines with A330's did this. Thomas Cook Airlines of course has since gone belly up. I took a Norwegian 787 (before they pulled out of transatlantic route) on the way back to LAX and that was packed in with the 3-3-3 layout, I hated it. The seats were more narrow and not nearly the legroom. I also felt like I had less arm room on the window side than I did on the A330. The gap of the armrest against the wall seemed a lot closer, and of course the armrest was rather narrow already. If I have a choice, I'm taking the A330 for it's 2-4-2 layout.

    • @TheMaartian
      @TheMaartian Před 8 měsíci +2

      The open terminal is very cool. During the day. On the first of three business trips to Sydney, AUS (where the software vendor was located), I decided to save my client (city and country of Honolulu) $1100 on Qantas, connecting through Honolulu to Sydney. Business class direct was $6200, but only $5100 when connecting. The only problem was that the flight from L.A. landed at 10:30 pm and didn't depart until 1:00am. We had to deplane and spend two hours in that open terminal because EVERYTHING in the airport was closed. It was hot and humid and pretty darn miserable. And then Qantas decided that the meal service at 2:00am local should be bangers and mash. I highly recommend NEVER eating bangers and mash at 2:00am. When we finally got to Sydney, it was fogged in and we had to divert to Cairn, where we sat on the ground for 2 hours. So much for saving the client $1100. The next two trips, I flew direct and paid the extra.

    I can see a 787-8 order eventually to replace their A330-200's. Their 787-9's will have a boost in capacity once delivered, the -8 being good for those lower density routes. I do not see why they have not gotten to Canada yet.

    • @AndrewSephiTV
      @AndrewSephiTV Před 8 měsíci +3

      Probably just their Business Strategy. They have a focus on Asia and less dense US Cities, removing LAX and JFK, they most fly to more medium size cities. I suppose they just do not want to compete to flagship airlines and focus more on the leisure traveler instead of business one. Since canada have most of its airports dominates by the flagship carriers I suppose they just do not see a reason to compete. This for me would make the most sense on how they operate.

    The a350-800 was actually the main look on the past, but at it never happens. They changed to 330-800, nonetheless because if kt popularity, they changed it to the 787 but also other things in mind. The 787-9 is really the a350-800 in in the work, and it have range, performance, while having efficiency and less weight (something the 330-800 lacks). At the end, the best option that suits them was the 787-9. Can't wait to fly in tjem though!

    THAT was your meal? 🤦🏻‍♂️ Once upon a time HA had really good food and you didn’t have to pay for it. Last time I flew with them they were just beginning to phase out the 767 for the 330 and by that time they were going downhill in quality of food and legroom. I really used to like them.

    Always flew in their A330’s when going to the west coast of the US but it’s clearly showing its age. Looking forward to the 787’s. SFO supposedly will be their first destination with the 787’s.

      It didn’t bounce, the A330 has many wheels on the main gear so that’s why

    PrimeAir (flown by another American carrier) also flies cargo A330s, but they’re not passenger. Not just Hawaiian and Delta

      Prime air 330 is actually contracted with hawaiian. Hawaiian is responsible for flight and tech ops

    That's an extortionate amount to pay to pre-book a seat! Yikes! I hope at check-in, all those fees are waived or at least heavily discounted, so Hawaiian can ensure healthy load factors. Asiana Airlines of Korea has similar extra legroom seats on their A350 that they charge I think 65 USD to pre-book. They don't waive the upgrade fee at check-in and when I flew with them, that section was almost empty, with rest of economy full. I'm sure they lose a lot more when the seat is empty, so this pre-selection fees should be waived at check-in in an ideal world. Also, I've been on 787s many times and never had issues with the seat width and I'm a reasonably large guy. That said, any configuration with just 2 seats on the window side is always nice to have.

    Their so-called 2-2-2 first class is very dated compared with most longhaul business class products these days. It is much better on their soon to arrive 787s with 1-2-1 in separate cubicles and direct aisle access for all passengers. It looks about the same as AC's current business class product on their 787, A330 and 777 fleets.

    I flew on their A330 from Auckland to Hawaii in 2015 , even got conned into extra legroom for$180 which ended up being the exit door seats half way along plane, horrible aircraft, crap service and very outdated decor . Never again .
