    You're not being petty, I promise. I'm disabled, and some annoyances you're talking about create accessibility challenges for me. I have a hand tremor, and small pans of product that need a larger brush are iffy for me. Certain eyeliner textures create an application problem for me, too. As for your favourite design features, easy-to-open lids and magnetic closures are a huge accessibility plus for me and many others. I was so glad to hear you mention disabled users! So many people don't realize how many disabled people use cosmetics, and it's frustrating. These are not little things. Rather, you're highlighting extremely helpful design features. If a makeup brand can sell a lipstick at $25 or more, they can have their packaging department consult disabled makeup users and make these kind of adjustments to their product. There are more disabled people out there than ableds think, and what benefits us will benefit many ableds, too. Thanks so much for this video!

      I am disabled, also totally blind and I agree with you about your comments here. Certain design features definitely add to or detract from accessibility. Also love a magnetic feature because then I am not accidentally dropping or losing something. Plus I also feel like heavy order or magnetic packaging. It feels especially luxurious. I also really like lots of cool texture on packaging because then I can appreciate it since I can't see it, visually.

      Yesssss I really wish they’d make changes!! I take care of elderly and most of them have issues with their hands. OA causes their hands to be deformed, stiff and they’re also weak so it’s very hard for them to do simple things that we take for granted. But especially my pts with tremors! It took months for my patient with tremors to be able to use a continuous glucose monitor due to tremors. I wish they’d consider these things when creating products. Like not everyone has people to assist them!
      Oh and neuropathy in the hands also

    This entire video SPEAKS TO ME. Let me add one to the list of “hates”: Bottles with droppers. Especially ILIA’s Super Serum Skin Tint. There is just SO much wasted product all over that glass dropper and leaking out under the cap! What is even the point of squeezing drops out when I have to wipe product off of the entire dropper and lid???

    My packaging pet peeves (some overlap with Kelly):
    -Squeeze tubes for liquid blush or bronzer (Glossier cloud paint). Easy to waste product by dispensing too much.
    -Too small pans (Elf putty blush)
    -Droppers for foundation (Beauty blender skin tint). Too messy.
    -Huge mascara wands. I find them hard to use/be precise with, personally.

    • @elizabethb.8599

      Omg, huge mascara wands. Just this morning I got the giganto YSL brush too close to the base of my lashes, hit my eye, blinked, and deposited a 1 1/2 inch line of mascara across my fresh undereyes

      Mine is the click lip products. I like the e.l.f. Clout Pout but it drives me crazy that I can't just roll it back down if I click up too much. My hands shake a little and if it's sticking up I'm likely to scrape it with the cap while trying to put it back on.

    • @LunarEleven
      @LunarEleven Před 2 měsíci +2

      Also agree about squeeze tubes for the same reason, it's inevitable you'll waste some. The opening on the Cloud Paint tubes is large and it's hard to get a tiny amount, like if I didn't get enough on the first try and just need a smidge more.

    • @CatFurniture974
      @CatFurniture974 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Agreed on the huge mascara wands! Real humans don’t have anime eyes, why make an anime-eye-sized wand for something that really requires precision? Lancôme used to have these giant Christmas tree shaped wands which were a giant PITA.

    The packaging I really like is clear packaging, when you can see the product through the container. I like to see the used product through the bottle or compact, it makes me feel like I am using my products and money is not going to waste haha.

    I don't like the click up lip packaging. I do not like not being able to put it back if i clicked too much, if that makes sense. Plus the tarte one i have is too gushy to be a stick or something lol. It just smooshes down and i get too much product gooping on my lips, yet the plastic is scratching at the same time. Idk just don't like it.

    It's crazy how much bad packaging affects my use of a product. With the doe foot applicators, I have the opposite preference. I HATE when it picks up too much product, especially with lip products. I'd rather double dip any day than deal with the mess that results from using half the product that came out, and putting the applicator back in only for the rest to gloop up around the top. Especially with lip gloss- I just want a light sheer coat. So many glosses pick up way too much product for my preference, and I have full lips as well. Such a pet peeve.

  • @handsoaphandsoap
    @handsoaphandsoap Před 2 měsíci +16

    So with you on the poofs, I would rather have a pump or doe foot with any liquid product. The sponge poof just gets so messy as it gets filled with product and then the product on the sponge is more likely to dry up, making it harder to actually use the sponge or get product out of the packaging.
    My personal pet peeve with packaging is squeezy tube lip products. It’s so hard to get the right amount of product out and they always, without fail, get clogged. Also hate hate hate acrylic plastic packaging. Not only is it ugly to look at, it also breaks so easily. I feel like every single person I’ve seen that owns the Clionadh Dragon Fruit palette has had the lid joints break on them. Has happened with every ColourPop quad I’ve owned too.

    Doe foot applicators for lip gloss: I was trying to finish a lip glass that I'd had for awhile and got to about a quarter of the tube left and out of nowhere thought: the applicator has been dipped out, touched my lips and then put back in the tube several times a day for over a year. And now that you only have a small amount left it's basically the spitty backwash. I was so disgusted I threw it away right then 🤢

    I agree about the packaging! The amount of times I've had to crawl around under my vanity for a mascara or concealer is hilarious but I've come to accept that since it's me whose knocking them off lol. It's when I have to struggle to even use the product that I get fed up and the product gets tossed into a drawer to gather dust. When you held up that colorpop compact I cringed lmao. I have one of the most unique and beautiful highlighters I own in that compact but I never use it because fighting to get the darn thing open is a nightmare! It has that weird angled bottom edge so there's nowhere to get a solid grip!

I got so tired of the plastic hinges on compacts that broke & had to be rubber banded together, caps that came off eye & lip pencils as well as lipsticks. Aargh, it made such a mess in my purse & makeup bag. I don't expect luxury, but at least make it sturdy.

    Thank you for this video, Kelly! I too am super conscious of packaging design and the user experience, so I can relate to all of this. (I'm constantly reimagining better packaging choices in my head as I use products, lol) Oh the doe foot issues......yes, yes.
    I recently had quite the back and forth with the folks at Saie about their new Slip Tint concealer I purchased (LOVE the formula, btw). I discovered that the inner plastic piece that is supposed to prevent too much product from being distributed on the doe foot wasn't doing that - when I would pull out the wand, it was like it was coming straight out of an open tube - waaaay too much product on it. I sent photos with arrows showing where I meant - this wasn't the plastic ring stopper at the top of the tube, but the piece further down inside it.
    I didn't know if that was how it was designed or if there was something wrong with the one I purchased. They kept saying it was normal. And I kept telling them that there was zero resistance on the doe foot as it came out of the tube - I even tested it out on a handful of other brand concealer tubes, as well as lipglosses, to be sure my Saie concealer tube was behaving differently (it was).
    I even researched how these types of tubes are constructed and what all the pieces are intended to do. (I know, I know.....but I HAD to be sure I wasn't missing something 😂) There definitely is supposed to be a slight resistance on that mid-way piece as you pull the doe foot wand OUT of the tube, so that the correct amount of product ends up on it. And mine does not do that.
    All this to say that Saie insisted that there was nothing wrong with how my tube was working. Sigh. So now I have to decide - should I repurchase this, especially because it's one of the best concealers I've ever used? Or not, because the way the tube functions is just too much of a hassle with a ton of product coming out each time? OR........is my tube simply defective and all the others work as intended? (even though Saie wouldn't agree).
    Kelly, do you have this concealer? How does your wand and tube function? Anyone else who would be willing to test theirs out and let me know? Thank you! Sorry this is so TL;DR, but I love Saie products and think they are a great company....but man, this was a frustrating one. ❤

    any applicator where i need to pit product onto a different surface, dip my brush in, wipe the brush off on a second surface, and THEN go on my face is an automatic NOPE from me. It's fine when i'm doing complex looks at a desk, but doing quick touch ups is the name of the game for me

    I think u got a bad ND concealer. Both of mine are fine. 🤔 I skip divided pan products 100%. Also the sponge ball applicator. Hard pass! I like a doe foot, so decluttered my NYX bare wirh me with me concealer because it was a pump. Yeah, hate having to get oht tweezers to get into a compact. The new NYX butter bronzer/blush are like that. They may be passed on to a friend soon. You are right to have a petty rant about ur preferences. There are too many products/brands to put up with crappy and annoying packaging. 😂😂❤❤

    Have you tried putting the puff over the sifter and then flipping the jar over so it dumps product onto the puff? My absolute favorite product format, whenever possible, is a bullet in a standard twisty tube―foundation, concealer, lipstick, blush, bronzer, highlighter, etc. It's hygienic, it doesn't get messy, it allows me to apply everything directly to my face (I don't *have* to put it onto my hand or use a separate tool), it doesn't require sharpening, and I can dig out all of the product (scraping out a tube of lip gloss/ concealer is so messy). I'm not *super* picky, I still buy pot/ pan/ doe-foot/ squeeze-tube format products (and I can appreciate a pot or a compact/ pan), but the bullet lipstick format is my holy grail. Doe-foot packaging is gross, but for a really great gloss, I will suffer it―looking at you Fenty.

    The scoopable doe foot that works for me is the peripera glasting gloss. It is a larger doe foot with an almost cup like cavity. The unfortunate thing is it is so big I get too much gloss so it is likely better if you like to apply to a middle space between applicator and face like back of your hand or metal palette then use fingers or brush.

    I just ordered a Patrick Ta blush. I’m so happy it has a convenient opening. I also agree with you on packages that have a flat edge and don’t roll. I will look for those in lip gloss, mascara and other products that usually will roll away! It makes a HUGE difference!

    I have that exact hourglass palette and agree with the bronzer! I take my brush and with the other hand wrap around the brush and scoop down to make the bristles as condensed as possible. Then I swivel the brush on the bronzer pan like a screwdriver to pick up product 😅

    I agree with you on most of these tbh. I'll take the doe foot one further actually. I'm not a fan of them at all in concealers and eye primers! I get them for lip products, that's fine. But ever since I got the NYX Serum Concealer, I've decided that a pump for concealer is freaking genius! I can pump out the tiniest amount and I know that I'm going to be able to use up the products without having the mess of removing the stopper and scraping out what's left. And eye primer needs to be in a squeezy tube, though I'd love to see that get put into a pump too. I blend it out with my fingers anyway and this way, I'm going to have a much easier time getting all of the product.
    Oh yeah, and dropper foundations or the literal pour it out foundation bottles. WE WANT PUMPS! LOL

    The worst offender of all of the concealers I have ever used is the Tarte Extra Creamy Shape Tape. It's CONSTANTLY making a huge mess every time I use it. Whenever I want to put it in my travel makeup bag, I need to wrap it in paper towels or put it in a bag & hope it doesn't somehow manage to smear all over everything. It's wild.

    I don't consider this rant petty, I think all of this is fair criticism that brands should pay attention to, bc you are not alone on a lot of them. I'm a graphic designer and there are some design things that annoy me for petty reasons, like several fonts that I hate, not bc they are bad, I just don't like them...and it is petty. But some design choices bother me bc I think they impact the actual product negatively. For example I hate the packaging for The Ordinary bc it is so difficult to tell the difference between their products. I wear glasses and my eyesight is really bad, so when I wash my face it is a real pain trying to figure out which of their products I need to use. I don't buy their products for that reason and it might be a little petty to write off an entire brand for that reason but honestly I don't like that the company is so unconcerned with this. I know why they made this design choice, it appears to the consumer as though they aren't spending money on expensive packaging so they are saving them money. But the cheapest form of production for labels is digital print which is CMYK, so they could easily use color coding to differentiate their products without any additional cost. Good Molecules is the same price point and their packaging is so much better so I switched to their products instead. I don't think any complaint that is driven by user experience is petty.

    I think I know what's causing the different doe foot applicators to have different amounts of product!! So the opening within the tube is circular, and so when the doe foot is flat (like tower 28), the product isn't being scraped off the flat portions. When the doe foot is circular and the opening is also circular, the product is being scraped off most of the doe foot, except for the tip of the applicator. So I think it's less about the hair size, and more about the opening shape and doe foot shape!

    Personally, if there’s a type of packaging I really hate it’s the big doe foot applicator of most lip oils nowadays. I have a couple ones in my mind like the elf glow reviver, the super popular dior one or also the nyx fat lip oil… the thing that I dislike is how much product they take but what I hate the most is where the product stays on the doe foot: basically it’s either all on the point of it (so usually you end up applying way too much) or it’s on the thinner part (and you don’t get to use it because when you put it back it makes a mess with the stopper and stays in the cap). I don’t know if it’s just me but one thing I know for sure is that there are other doe foot applicators and I don’t have a problem with them😂
    By the way great video as always, I really enjoy this series!❤

      I feel like on the brand’s website is where you’ll find mini bronzers. Maybe Sephora and Ulta.
      NARS, benefit, tarte, physician formula, the balm, too faced, Colourpop in the white twist off packaging has some smaller pans in general, and maybe the newer NYX bronzers are a smaller pan.

      @tabithak5943 Oh, gosh I so appreciate this list! I only purchase cruelty-free, which knocks a couple of those off, and then I'm pale and pinky, so I'm looking for a very, very sheer or very light bronzer, so I'm difficult haha!
