You gotta love to this day V DUBS still one of the most popular cars. Still holding it down after all these years. My favorite part of being a member of the best Car Club in the World, if you ask me is us VW family never trash VW ANYTHING! Yes from time to time the Old Lady has enough of tripping over VW parts and forces a liquidation of them but whatever it may be you can guarantee it has a new home and won't be lost and wasted forever. If it's rusty and has a VW on it, it's perfect.

BLC is short for Brown-Lipe-Chapin Co. Starting in the 1936 they made headlights, bumpers, and hubcaps along side Guide Lamp Corp. They both had heavy association with General Motors and eventually became divisions of GM.

I found that removing the plugs and putting a squirt of engine oil in the cylinder and cranking it, then putting the plugs back in, made it much more likely to start quickly. It temporarily improved compression. Try it!

Brotha, I'm sure you don't see yourself as a "celebrity", which is one of the things that makes you great... that friendly humility, but you're quickly rivaling Mike Rowe as my top "famous dudes I'd like to buy a beer." Love your common sense approach and the way you talk yourself (and us) through things in your garage... reminds me a lot of my own approach... with the exception of the fact I don't have the luxury of telling folks I'm making a CZcams video when they catch me talking to myself 🤣 At any rate, thank you for so freely sharing your vast wealth of knowledge in such an easily comprehensive way.

V.W. bit the dust in my part of the country because of emission testing, I drove a 74 Thing that drove me nuts trying to get it to pass emissions, Horizontal engine configuration left hydrocarbon emissions too high for state requirements. Before emissions killed them I had a dune buggy (6 volt electrical system) that I drove the beaches in Mexico, had implement tires for flotation and gave 30 miles to the gallon. Sure miss the ole days

Loved my '57 bug. Bought it for $350 in 1969. Even a clutz like me could keep it tuned, which was a must. The carb manifold would be coated with ice as it idled to warm up. Had to have that new exhaust, what was that called? Wide wheels and tires. Later put Porsche front brakes on it. Such fun.

    Hi Mustie,
what you called a "sway bar" is actually a unique VW feature and is called "Ausgleichsfeder" in German. It works exactly the opposite way a sway bar does. It makes the suspension of the outer rear wheel softer when taking a road curve, thus somewhat reducing the risk of oversteering.

What is B-L-C? In 1936 the Brown-Lipe-Chapin Co (B-L-C) came into being. The Syracuse, NY company turned out lamps, bumper guards and hub caps for GM's eastern section of the United States.
The four varieties of headlight for hot rods are model numbers; 903-J, 904-A, 682-J, and 682-C. All use the standard 7" bulb with the three prongs on the back.
Similarities over all the models are the trim ring, bulb retainer ring, and threaded mounting stud. Over the years there have been minor changes to these parts. But they almost always interchange over all the different models.
Differences are the obvious headlight bodies, and the riveted on lower mount. 682-C & 682-J share the same basic body shape, but 682-C has the parking light mounted on top in an indent stamped into the metal.
Wiring is also different over the model lines, with exception of 903-J & 682-J which share the same basic design. While 904-A and 682-C have unique wires for each of their parking light component. The earliest buckets had wire sockets underneath, rather then the loomed wires exiting the housing that is most commonly seen.
Paint was always black. A chrome trim ring was an upgrade from the painted one. 904-A was the only headlight model, that I have observed, that was chrome optional from the factory. But the majority of the 904-A were still painted black.
Tags (pictured above) were not on the very earliest headlights. Before tags, bodies were stamped with the the maker's name, model number, and "MADE IN USA". ALL riveted on tags were silver (nickel) color when new. The brass ones you might see today have had the silver polished off. Tags could also be made of aluminum, the one second from the top is one.

when you get one of these running, you could totally make a jump cart out of it using a big battery, a bass competition alternator, and long set of cables with a big anderson connector on one end. it would be quiet too since this engine is big enough that you could just put a big pulley on it and run it a little above idle.
