  • Anyone who has worked on this era truck knows that the fit and finish is mediocre at best. My goal on this truck is to make it somewhat less mediocre!

Good job. These are trucks and you can go crazy keeping lines even somewhat perfect.

A friend of mine once did very much what you’re doing on a ‘48 Chevrolet 3/4-ton pickup, and learned that, at the factory, lining up panel lines was not “Job 1”. It turned out well, but some compromises were made. Good luck.

I feel the pain. When I was getting my Skylark ready for paint I did new door pins and wow it took forever for me as a first timer to get things all happy and the way I wanted it. Good job

This is the level of detail it takes to do a quality restoration!

Not many people realize that you have to do some fitting before hosing panels down with paint. If I hadn't done this, I would be in trouble when I went to install the doors.

close door use paint sticks to set gaps and hold in place, tighten from inside.

As an owner of a 56 panel, I feel exactly what you're saying

LOL! Getting that front clip to line up was a totally different set of challenges. I wasn't allowed the opportunity to do it before it was painted. So it was extra fun just to make it somewhat presentable.

doing my first restoration on a 1969 3/4 ton truck... previous owner had transplanted a cap top by cutting the a-pillars and 4" below the bottom of the rear window. I don't think I'll ever be able to get a good fit. I'll be happy to get the doors to close without scraping paint off somewhere.

Has that door skin been replaced? The bottom back corner looks like it needs to be peeled off and the door frame readjusted (cut back).

No, but the quarter has been really monkeyed with, which required a bit of extra work to square up.

My goal was to get it to the point where it wouldn't chip paint if someone closed it wrong or in a bind. The factory fit on these was terrible.
