Actually, that shield was featured in an old video of his back when he did his standard of pick a target and see when a bullet goes through, I recommend the video as there are two, one with this shield and I believe another maybe weaker shield he did before, I think Irving is also featured in one of or both of the videos

Very true. It often gets so bad that by time you change it out it just dumps the transmission because it was using the coarseness of the metal shavings in the old fluid to help give the transmission friction and now that it's working properly, the transmission starts to slip

How well held the target is, matters. The same plate on string might survive when it wouldn't when hard mounted into the ground. Because when isn't soft mounted it can move and turn some of the bullet kinetic energy into kinetic energy in the movement of the plate.

The barrel rings while it's on the rubber because the rubber is elastic and it causes the vibrations to be sent back through the metal with a very low energy loss coefficient. It would work better on a rubber balloon. This is the same principle as to why windchimes work, there's not much energy getting transferred out of the chime through the string so the most efficient way the vibrations (energy) can leave the system is through the air.
Similar to how the plates are mounted in a glockenspiel or a xylophone

The reason the barrel part rings is because when you're holding it, the vibrations of the impact get absorbed by your hand. When you're not, there's nothing fleshy to absorb them so they turn into sound waves.

So on the ringing sound for those wondering. My best guess is that when the barrel is hit or dropped it starts swinging in a certain frequency dependent on the material and length of the barrel section. The reason why you don‘t hear it when in your hand or on the stone slab is, that your hand or the rock stops it from vibrating similar to when you touch a ringing cord on a guitar. The material of the table might be worse at absorbing the vibrational energy and therefore the barrel rings for much longer and can be heard.

@@davetremaine9688 I don‘t think the irregularities play much of a role. On most instruments only the length of the vibrating tube, string or other sound producing medium plays a role. With drums, I think it is called a snare that you attach, you can change how the instrument sounds but the frequency stays the same (Not 100 certain on music stuff). The frequency you get from a vibrating object is dependent on the speed of propagation (material property independent of shape) and the length of the vibration. On the vibrating object you get standing waves which depend on the shape (opening on one or both sides of a tube). If you cut partial slits into the tube it might affect one side a bit but my best guess is, that the entire tube would still have those fixed vibrational modes even if parts were cut out as it is still a solid tube.
