  • How difficult is it to burn off a big mac? And is it possible to out-exercise a bad diet full of junk food? To find out, my friends and I are eating our favorite meals from McDonald’s. Then we’ll attempt to burn calories off the meals and see who’s the fastest at burning calories.
Take the quiz below for a step-by-step training and nutrition plan to transform your body:

Nicole: "I am very shocked that my 2 small burgers and my root beer is 900 calories. I'm going to do a leg day. That is my usual go-to, so I'm confident I can burn calories."
Cam: "1,063 calories for some nuggets. Dude, I felt like I was eating a kids' meal! My approach to burning calories? I really like playing basketball, so I'm hoping that this takes some of the pain out of just mindlessly doing cardio."
While Nicole and Cam are almost certain I’m gonna win, I have over 800 more calories to burn than they do, so a day before the challenge, I spoke with Dr. Eric Helms, who introduced me to the Compendium of Physical Activities.
I combed through the list and chose the most energy-demanding exercises to guarantee my success. I kept what I learned to myself, which was unfortunate for Nicole since Eric said:
"You really don't see great energy expenditure from resistance training. You wanna burn the most calories possible, cardio wins hands down."
The first exercise of my master plan is vigorous uphill biking. After the first 20 minutes, I was gassed. And Eric had warned me of this:
"It really does just come down to finding a way to not red line it to the point where your intensity goes down and you can maintain it."
But I’m competitive. So I kept pushing through and after an hour of giving everything I had, I'd actually burned 1,002 calories!
At the 60-minute mark, Cam had burned 595 calories, and Nicole 313.
Now, this doesn’t mean lifting weights is pointless if you want to burn calories:
"The resistance training tells your body to hold onto muscle mass. The cardio helps your energy expenditure to create the deficit to make sure that deficit comes from fat mass. A combination of energy deficit cardio and resistance training is probably the best way to go."
I still had almost 1,000 calories left to burn, so I switched to axe chopping. But just 10 minutes in, my hands were blistering. But I couldn’t let this stop me from the win. I pushed harder and faster for the next 30 minutes. After, I still had 340 calories left to burn.
Nicole: “After that first check-in, I brought Tahnee in. So it was almost like a boot camp.”
Unfortunately, Nicole once again did exactly what Eric warned me not to do when trying to burn calories:
"The average person doesn’t necessarily have the cardiovascular conditioning to make high-intensity training really effective. You're most of the time going to see higher energy expenditure just doing moderate-intensity training."
Cam: “I figured I could do a little bit of jump rope."
I still had 340 calories left to burn. I went with the basics, the stairmaster. I added 25 lbs to a backpack to speed things up. But the extra weight made it a lot harder than I expected. Out of pure exhaustion, I went against Eric’s advice and leaned my body onto the handles:
"So you commonly see people on the StairMaster, they're just like fully on top of it, and they're basically only moving maybe 60% of their body mass. And, of course, that's gonna drop calories."
So I lifted myself up and gave it my all for the final push. In the meantime ...
Nicole: I went for a walk. Then I came back and found out I had another 180 calories to burn, so I jumped on the treadmill and tried to do some sprints there."
Cam: "After the jump rope, I realized I was having a much better time playing basketball. So I opted to go back out into the heat and did some shooting and some dribbling drills."
Before you get the wrong idea, and think that you should always burn off your Mcdonalds calories or can never eat fast food again, know this. The average male already burns around 2,000 calories doing absolutely nothing all day. But nowadays, it’s easier than ever to gain weight by eating more calories than your body needs, and while it is possible, it’s very difficult to reverse it through exercise alone.
Don’t get me wrong. Exercise is amazing for you, and everyone needs it, but if you want to lose weight and get in shape, you’d be a fool not to prioritize your diet.
So, who won in the end? Cam did. Watch the video for more deets.

Hello jeremy. I hope you see this. Your videos are what I follow for all my plans. I've watched all but I haven't come across any info on this and I'd really like it if you'd respond. For hypertrophy, is it necessary to match the total number of reps on the first set with the rest of sets? Say you do 12 reps of bicep curls, 1 rep short of failure, for your remaining sets, should one aim for those 12 reps as well or just do the number of reps that would also be 1 rep short of failure for the second set?

Weight isn't the full story too. Two people with the exact same weight but one guy is muscular with 10% body fat and the other is obese with 35% bodyfat. If they were to both lie down on the bed for an entire day, the muscular guy would still burn more calories because muscles expends much more energy even when at rest. This also means that a lighter person who has more muscle mass can actually have a higher basal metabolic rate than a heavier person with less muscle mass.

It took me like 1 year and a half to get rid of 22 kilos and build some muscle because I was losing weight and then gaining it again. But overall I feel better with myself and don’t feel bad if at some point you get a few more kilos. You do everything at your own pace I believe you can do it. I will loose some more kilos of fat to get to a 13 or 14% body fat, I want to get my face lean. Now is still chubby and I still look fat when Im wearing a lot of clothes. But you got it bro

Few months as in like 3-4? You might want to give yourself more time. Say you're 175lbs, you currently have 49pounds of fat. Let's assume you gain enough muscle from working out to still be 175lbs when you reach your body fat of 15%.
You're looking at losing 26.25 pounds of fat. That's actually a lot. It's 6.56 lbs a month. Sure it's possible, but the more you push yourself the less likely you are to continue to workout and keep to a healthy diet after you lose that fat.
On top of that, losing fat quickly means your skin doesn't have the chance to adjust and you're more likely to end up with excess skin that just never goes away.
I just started working out again and probably am also around 28% body fat. I'm not even bothering giving myself a deadline. My goal is to feel good after working out and not be overly hungry while eating healthy and at calorie deficit.
My rule with resistance training and even cardio is that if my pain level is above a 2-3 the day after; I've over did it. I want to go do a full body resistance workout 2-3 days a week along with a 10 min cardio warm up and 20-40mins of cardio after lifting. And possibly some cardio mixed in on non resistance training days.
I know myself well enough to know that if my pain level hits above a 3 from a workout, it lasts for 2 days and I just will NOT go every other day which means that I won't hit the gym 3 times a week like I'd really prefer to.
It's different if you're not doing a full body workout like I do when you lift but eeh.. if you're trying to lose fat, doing a full body workout is much better then splitting up body parts. .. thats really just for getting big muscles.
Functional fitness is about FULL body workouts at all times.

    • @OgdenM
      @OgdenM Před 6 měsíci +5

@@mingchuanzheng9659 , it's a lot if you current standard is 0 minutes. It also depends on your intensity.
Like, if you're just starting, doing an hour workout is a big no no ... unless you know what you're doing. Even if it's a mix of weight and cardio.
It can be ok if you're keeping your heart rate low and are not lifting heavy weights.
The higher your heart rate goes, the less time you can workout. The higher the weight you lift, the more sore you'll be the next few days and both mean you're less likely to workout / be active in the following days. Which, that will just end up stopping you from progressing.
I used to be super active, probably 18% body fat when I was in my early 20s. I'm now in my 40's, probably like oh 28% body fat and just started back at the gym.
I flat out have to watch my heart rate so I don't get dizzy while doing cardio. Younger people can have the same issue. I did when I first started becoming really active in my late teens.

Very visually helpful video, showing exactly how hard it is to "burn off what you eat" - because in the real world (non-fitness world), people really do believe that that's how it works. I've seen people first hand relying on the calorie counters on fitbits and treadmills and doing cardio thinking they're somehow losing fat when they're barely working off what they've (over)eaten. I don't think a lot of people truly understand the 'BMR' part of the equation either, with people thinking they have to physically burn off their entire days' calories with exercise. So, thank you Jeremy, this should be shown in schools, colleges and workplaces!

    • @imnotmike
      @imnotmike Před 5 měsíci +5

The problem with those counters is that they include your body metabolism. So the counts they give you is not just the exercise. They also include the calories that you would have burned anyways even if you weren't exercising, just through the process of living. I imagine they do it for motivational purposes. If you saw how few calories your exercise is burning compared to just sitting around doing nothing, it would be very difficult for a lot of people to convince themselves to get off the couch.

I stop off at various parks to do pull ups, chin ups, leg raises, dips and trunk twists. Just part of my routine. Eat smart and in moderation. 68 years old, 69 in two months. 5'6", 145lbs., waist 29" and natually ripped. Most important that I feel really good everyday. Sleep is important too. Consistency is key. Enjoying life is more important to me than being at a perfect body weight. I’m 65, slow jog 3 miles every day, do fairly heavy isometric resistance training 3 days a week, play golf (without a cart) twice a week, cut my grass with a push mower, and occasionally just take a nice relaxing walk. I’m 5’10” and have maintained a body weight of 205 for the past year with this routine and I pretty much eat whatever I want within reason. I’d say my diet is about 70% clean and 30% crappy and I don’t count calories. My goal is 90/10 but I’m not there yet and may never be. I exercise plenty so the only way I’m going to get rid of my moderate love handles is with diet. I’ve tried but I don’t have the willpower and just wind up miserable every time. I just don’t worry about it anymore.

This has to be one of the top videos based on practical advices and insights from Dr Eric Helms. I didn’t know cardio is the better calorie burner as compared to resistance training if you are not really strong at lifting weights yet. For someone like me who watches, reads and applies a lot of these tools to test, that particular info was new to me.
Feeling great about it already. Time to ramp up my cardio sessions for my fat loss journey!

    • @several.
      @several. Před 3 měsíci +1

I feel like one thing they skipped over on resistance training being that muscle has a higher energy draw per mass to fat, so converting your fat to muscle increases your resting energy expenditure, essentially investing for future weight loss. It's also why people plateau, as they lose fat/muscle from pure cardio, they are reducing their natural energy expenditure, but doing similar levels of cardio, causing diminishing results.

What im trying to get to is its totally possible to burn off unhealthy food.

The difference in time - is not a big deal (like 10-15 minutes), but you didnt count the CAL/TIME effects. Jeremy = 14,6 ccal/min, Nicole 7,3 ccal/min, Cam 9,93 ccal/min. So Jeremy made the most burning excercises. But there is a huge remark here. The more intensely you train, the higher the chance of burning your muscles! If you are doing simple walking with BPM lower than 120~ (for each man its different), you loose only fat. When you get aerobic BPM - you start to loose muscles. When you get anaerobic BPM (140+) you highly start to loose muscles. To prevent loosing muscles - all those TIMING should be controlled.
You should fim something for those pimples, who need not to burn calories, but have to build muscles and get the weight. Thank you

Wow. That was a very impressive set of examples, not only on how to burn calories but also just what a mistake it "might" be to eat fast food too often. I tried swimming often to burn calories, and although I was having success (45 minutes each time), and I was losing about 1 lb per week. However, when the pool I was using was shut down for a month for maintenance I switched to jogging every day (also for 45 minutes), and I started to drop more weight at a rate of about 2 lbs per week. I'm surmising that this weight loss from running was probably due to the fact that I suddenly switched to a new exercise, and my body has yet to make the necessary adjustments.

When reducing calories to achieve the caloric deficit, its imperative that you maintain some kind of exercise program at the same time. If you dont exercise your weight loss will be short lived, because your body eventually (within a few weeks) will recognize youre eating less and will start taking measure to reduce your basal metabolic rate. And then poof there goes you caloric deficit, and your weight loss - unless you start eating even less.
This is a death spiral to failure. Eventually you'll be depriving your body of critical nutrients to stay healthy, and the reduction in BMR usually comes from muscle cannibalization.
Its critical to understand the effects of metabolic adaptation. Calorie restriction is only part of the answer. It has to be combined with exercise to prevent (or slow down) metabolic adaptation for sustained weight loss. An you want your body burning fat, not cannibalizing muscle. You ever seen really obese people only eating salads, but they just sit around all day and stay fat? This is why.

I'm also working on my balance and overall body coordination!"
The key to dancing on a treadmill: Keep the belt moving slow. I keep it at however fast the 1 speed is. (I think like 3 miles an hour). It lets me do ALL sorts of fun stuff like spins, kicks, shuffle etc etc etc.
Just ignore the Calories burned if you're dancing on it.. as he said, it's like up to 20% off anyway and if you're dancing you're burning more calories then it says because it is based on speed and time I think.

I have recently become obsessed with weight loss because the last 3 months of supposed weight loss was just a faulty scale and I really didn't lose any weight.
So I have been doing extreme amounts of cardio every day, and I did a similar experiment where I would eat 1 fast food meal and literally ALL of my dedicated exercises for the day, amounting to 1000+ calories or more would barely even cover that one meal.
I can't imagine eating like shit every single day.
