  • Valentino's association with Rambova was to prove both his greatest pleasure and his greatest pain. Born Winifred Kimball Shaughnessy she was a 1920's costume and set designer, artistic director, screenwriter, producer, actress, fashion designer and Egyptologist.~On her separation from Valentino~" He knew what I was when I married him. I have been working since I was seventeen. Homes and babies are all very nice, but you can't have them and a career as well. I intended, and intend, to have a career and Valentino knew it. If he wants a housewife, he'll have to look again." In the mid 1960s she was struck with scleroderma, and became malnourished and delusional as a result. She died in Pasadena of a heart attack on June 5, 1966 at the age of 69. Her ashes were scattered in Arizona.

Thank you for sticking up for Natacha. May I join in and give you support.
Natacha was more sinned against than she sinned. Her mother shipped her off to boarding school at age 8 to England, then had her spend summers in France with friends. She survived because she was strong-minded and smart. No doubt she carried baggage from what an eight year old child had to view as rejection. So far as becoming Kozlov's mistress at 17, she was only one of many and he was a Svengali. She rose above that.

I love how Elizabeth Nails it with her comment about the Studios tearing them apart. After studying both intensely, I have come away with a strong feeling that they really were a TRUE ROMEO AND JULIET STORY and as such, it ended in Tragedy. He was devastated after losing her and any man can tell, by the way he looked at her, he was entralled with her. I read before his death, that he was talking with her and trying to rekindle what the studio broke apart. Anyhow, if it weren't for his death and their separation, I truly believe these two would have OWNED HOLLYWOOD EVENTUALLY!! They were both just TOO TALENTED and maybe the studios recognized that and plotted to tear them apart. Couples can learn a lot from Rudolph's and Natacha's Relationship. If you only trust each other and work with each other, THE WORLD CAN BE YOUR OYSTER. It was for them for a brief but Wonderful Moment.

You are correct. Even though they were on different continents, Rudy and Natacha were exchanging telegrams and all but reconciled their relationship. Rudy had a telegram from Natacha expressing love and the desire to reconcile under his pillow while he was in the hospital.

@ardenevox You kind of answered your own question by stating it was1926. In that time people would be traveling continent to continent by steamship. Natacha would have had to take a steam ship from Europe to New York City and then travel by train across the entire United States to get to Los Angeles. Traveling by commercial jet wasn't an option back then. I know a lot of people blame Natacha for not being at the funeral, but was simply impossible for her to get to him in time. It's heartbreaking.

@@aziraphale1334 having said that, and maybe still no time but I looked up transAtlantic crossings in 1920s and it took from 1-3 weeks. Timeline for Valentino's collapse to funeral was 15th to 30th Aug/26 when NYC funeral took place (2 weeks) and then West Coast funeral after that so potentially possible. Though Lindberg didn't do the first tranAtlantic flight till 1927, a year later, might well be there was no way to get back in time. But about 3 weeks+ (not sure of date of LA funeral) passed. Indeed tragic.

I always have wondered what he saw in that weirdo. She was cold and haughty. But at the same time very intelligent and business oriented. Again ahead of her time and at a time when women's opinions didn't have much credit or value. He was a sweet and gentle man who respected women. Two people from two different worlds. But he loved her.

He was coddled as a boy and was still a boy...being taken in hand by a strong woman who managed his life seemed to be what he wanted...until she decided to go off on her own projects. Although he let her design Falcon Lair's interiors, she never actually never lived there...Don't forget, he had a mess of a first marriage...he met Jean Acker before he was a star...she also was strong-willed with ambition...they hit it off when they met, talking for hours, saw each other on and off and then got married.....She was actually a lesbian...he wrote her imploring her to come back, calling her his "dear little wife" which didn't help matters. That old world attitude was a turn-off for her. Ultimately, they renewed their friendship...because they got along well, but the wasn't the sexual aspect. Rambova also had her own ambitions and, tiring of being in charge of him, she may have ultimately felt smothered as well by the "old-fashioned Rudy."

      Very demanding and bossy.
He was apparently soft and gentle.
He was truly the beautiful in every way!
Such a great loss at only
      31 years of age.
And the "TALKIES" came out in 1927!!
He would have gone on to greater things.
      He could act as well!

It as great to read the comment by Michael Morris. I'm a new Valentino fan (since July) and became fascinated (and a HUGE FAN) of Natacha from the first moment I read "Dark Lover" by Emily Leider. I moved on to "Madam Valentino" which is a marvelous book, well researched, well written by a writer/artist who became interested in her because of her art and not her marriage. I recommend anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating woman to read Morris's book. Running out of words.

I'm a for sure push over for women with Black Hair as well as Strong Women. So as a gentleman previously pointed out, Valentino probably fell in Love with that as well. Love suffers Long. I can't say that I feel sorry for him though. Cause if you ever really Loved someone, I believe that old saying, "Better to have Loved and Loss than to never have Loved". Great Video. Loved all the comments and read Q one however, I don't recall seeing the name of the song in any comment. I will do my own research. Anyhow, THIS MAN WAS TALENTED. Barbara Shernoff When You Walk Through Life and You Have Seen Love Ride In and Out of Your Life but Because Your Natural Manly Nature Tied You to the Train Stop Bench, You Can’t Get On. You Yearn For That Feeling Even Though You Know, The Construct, Universe, God, or Whatever You Want to Call It Is Going to Throw that Dirty, Dirty Curve On You. At Least You Can Say, I Felt that Experience. Cause We Are Not Gods Yet, Gods Loves to Remind Us that We Do Not Control All the Outcomes. Once Again, Though Tragic and I Believe Every Word You Wrote, He Loved Her, Spent Time With Her, Breathed Her, Touched Her and More than Likely Tasted Her, I Do Not Feel Sorry For Him. Actually, That May Have Been Why He Passed So Young. If You Study this Man, You Walk Away with a Profound Belief that He Was Almost a God Spiritually. He Was Deeply Spiritual. Love was Probably the Last Frontier For Him. It Seems He was an Old Soul and I Do Believe He Went to a Much Higher Level of Being then this Place.

Barbara Shernoff I Know You are Not a Fan of Natasha but I Would Love to Teach You about What Goes On Down Here. I Don’t Think No One Had Rudy’s Back More than Natasha Did. Had They Not Broke Up, They Would Have Owned All of Hollywood. I Actually Think that’s Part of Why Hollywood Wanted Them Apart. It Might Sound Funny but I Highly Encourage You if You Have Not Yet to Read Her Book Titled; My Life with Rudolph Valentino. It is Probably the Most Spiritual Book that I Have In My House and I Am Including The Bible. It Is One Of The Most Spiritual Books that I Have Read and I Have Read Many. Both He and She Were Great Fans of H.P.Blavasky. She is a Great Spiritualist from the Late 19TH Century. An Incredible Women. I Am Reading Her Isis Unveiled Now and It is Phenomenal. Anyhow, Our Lives On the Material Plane, Though They are Harsh, are Quite Short. In Soul Time, We are Here a Mere 3 Hours. In The Bible, It is Written, A Thousand Years to God is But a Day. Well. Congratulations. YOU ARE MADE IN GODS IMAGE. HIS IMMORTAL, POWERFUL SOUL FORCE. YOU ARE IMMORTAL. Only God Can Destroy You. You Are Energy. An Electromagnetic Chakra Energy Field. However, Unlike God Who is Free to Create and Experience In this Realm, We Are Souls Who Have to Earn Our Wings Like in; “Its a Wonderful Life”. We Have Missions Down Here Which Both Natasha and Rudy Understood. Missions to Help You On Your Journey to Becoming a God. Anyhow, I Run a Religious Organization In So Cal Called The Brotherhood of Rays Inc. Anyhow, ALL MY LIFE AND I MEAN MOST OF IT I HAVE BEEN ENTHRALLED BY THESE TWO BEINGS. So Much So, I Wanted to Write a Screenplay about Them. Right Now I Am Immersed In My Non-Profit and Haven’t the Time. I Think the Reason I Am Drawn to Them is that They Were Both Highly Spiritual. Like Is Attracted to Like. Rudy, I Feel was a Little More Well Rounded Spiritually as He Delved in Everything As In Natasha, She was Deeply into the Ancient Egyptian History and Religions. What People Do Not Understand, Is That Spiritualism Runs PROFOUNDLY DEEP! Most People are Asleep, Even the Ones in Church. Why? Because You Cannot, No Matter What They Tell You Find Yourself From a Doctrine of Religion. Imagine Life As a Drug Addiction, Which is Not a Bad or Far Fetch Analogy. Anyhow, Who is Going to Help You Let Go Of That Drug Addiction? Jesus? He’s a Fine Example. However, ALL AVENUES POINT TO YOU. FREE CHOICE. All the Problems You Ever Had LED To YOU! Look In The Mirror. The Problem Down Here is Between Us Being Out of Control and God Directing the Destiny of Souls, There is Only One Escape. And that is To Find Yourself, The Answers, and Evolve. So. God Gives You Not What You Want In this Life But What You Need For Your Mission Down Here. Rudy Was a Highly Evolved Enlightened Soul. That Enabled Him Like Some Other Great Ones to Accomplish Amazing Things. His Perfection In His Soul Also Manifested In His Physical Make-Up. People Down On the Planet of Half Truths, Don’t Want to Hear that Cause They Have Never Been Indoctrinated Into Mysticism. All I Can Say Is You are On the Right Track Spiritually If You Are Into Rudy. It is More than an Infatuation. You Are Finding Yourself. Happy Journey.

Barbara Shernoff Not By Any Means Am I Saying She Was a Saint. Even I Recognize that She Seemed, Even By Her Own Writing to Almost Hate His Success and Wanted It For Her Own. The Point I’m Merely Making Is He Loved Her. And Let’s Say She was A Toxic Person. If You Are In Love With that Toxic Person, You Have But 3 Hours of Time Spent On this Planet. Even if You are Lucky Enough to Live a Full Life. She Left Cause He Left Her Out of the UA Deal. Now. What Women Wouldn’t. He Betrayed Her In that Deal. Yes. She’s Toxic. But If You Love Her, You Say No to that Deal. I Guess In the End, Rudy Had Had Enough of that Love and It Wasn’t Worth the Further Abuse As You Say. At Least He Loved. The Story Continues.

    • @AWiz-lx8lh
      @AWiz-lx8lh Před 3 lety +1

Barbara Shernoff This Is All Quite Interesting Cause We Have All Seen People, Felt Their Energies and Felt Such Love but For Some Reason It Is Impossible to Be With that Person for Whatever Reason. Writing these Texts to You Has Helped Me Immensely Know that Had I’d Been with that Person, I Would Have Had a Hell to Live With Possibly. He Was In Love and He Got to Be With the Object of His Love. And The Universe Threw that Crappy Curve at Him with Her Being Her. It Just Goes to Show You that The Answers to Our Happiness Do Not Have Anything to Do With This Material Plane. Though She was a Flawed Individual, I Still Feel, had He Stayed In the Hot Kitchen, She Would Have Helped Him Reach the Highest Heights. Flaws and All. AIM HIGH.

I certainly enjoyed this compilation. I can understand why Rudy was attracted to Rambova, she was a very beautiful woman. Tis quite a shame that she wasn't able to provide for him a quiet, stable, and relatively normal life at home. Who knows, maybe if they hadn't split, Rudy might have lived out his entire life in relative peace and comfort.

I love this comment. Yes, Rambova was indeed beautiful and that will capture any man's heart. But I also feel that she was not right for him. He needed a woman that understood his culture. She was on another plane entirely. She did not want children and he was desparate to have them. He was raised in an old fashioned way in Italy. He wanted to continue that with his mate. Rambova would not have it. I'm sure there were other factors that led to their divorce. I feel so sorry for Rudy more than for anyone else. He was totally heartbroken when she left. He was mad and vengeful at that moment. And yet, his love for her was intact and most probably never left his heart. R.I.P. Rudy. May you have been reunited with Rambova in the hereafter -- may there be many sweet bambinos surrounding both of you -- may you both be happy -- may you both have peace and nothing but unconditional love.

A few of those pics i have not seen of course! But, Rudy was blinded by Natacha. Lol. They met because they worked together on the movie set. They made a name for each other in the movies. Maybe her independent untraditional ways intrigued him at first. But, then it later frustrated him greatly. I think after his career got under way, he wanted a less avant garde type of person. A person who wanted to settle down. I just don't think Winifred fit this bill. Fitting song.

Everything that needs to be said about this smart, talented, strong woman is that after Valentino died, she wrote a very positive book about him, then never said another word about him for the rest of her life except to family to whom she admitted he was the love of her life. Given Natacha's experience with love (mother's and Kozlov's) his signing the contract would have been seen as a betrayal of the greatest kind.

You mean his signing with UA? Chaplin's studio et al? That was the best place in the world for him creatively. I'm sure Rambova knew that. She was barred because she didn't know when to stop sounds like.

I am a fan of Natacha Rambova. She was a great artist and a fascinating woman. Unfortunately for her, she had something everyone else wanted (Valentino) and they set out to get rid of her. They did, but not content with that, they trashed her reputation and demolished her career. But she remained classy throughout it all. If you are a member of her family, please know there are some of us who because of "Madam Valentino" and a healthy skepticism learned to admire this fascinating woman.

@80stimeagain I agree with much of what you say. You make some very good points. I wonder if he wasn't also attracted to Rambova because of her ballet background. Rudy, however, didn't need Rambova to make a name for himself. He was already a well established star/actor when he met her. His career took off in spite of her. For a brief time, Rudy's career declined because of her influence, but sky rocketed when he finally rid himself of her.

But, I think mostly after Four Horsemen or the Sheik, she benefitted from working on his films as a set designer. It seemed to me their marriage was more a business arrangement than anything. Yes i agree some of his movies are better than others.

It was her right not to have children if she didn't want to, but that also means she should not have married a man who did. Everything she said above only confirms that she married him only to use his name to advance her career. It was such a reprehensible thing to do it makes me sick.

Ann Wollen was Natacha's cousin, I believe. But also dear friend. All the stories and books and photos of Natacha's life were to be found at Ann's house in Monrovia, California. Close to Pasadena. Ann is my grandfather's Sister, I think that makes her a great aunt...I think. But at that point in relations, we just called her an aunt. The relation to Natacha begins with Heber C Kimball (an interesting man who would "heal" people with his blessed stick.) and then down to the Shaughnessys, Natacha's birth name being Winifred Kimball Shaughnessy.

What a VIPER!! That quote of hers can go both ways. She knew what Rudy wanted most when she married him. Knowing fully well she wanted and valued a career over marriage and family, she shouldn't have married a man who she knew desired, with all his heart, a loving wife, home and children. It's obvious from her own words she married a loving man worth his weight in gold only to advance her career. She accomplished what she did because she was married to Rudy.
