2021: the year of tape taking over pretty much everyone’s priorities in modding a keyboard. I love it. From PCBs, cases, and even stabilizers.
Tapeyboards
Taeha Tapes
@@dickangelsamamemachaca4767 a happy coincidence or big brain foreshadowing
Makes me wonder what other mods we haven’t discovered
@@LandonQizilbash Recording every sound test underwater, for example.
Love how a single tape can drastically change how the board sounds, like my entire life.
lmfao sus?
Bro i used flex tape to fix my life :)
ok
This is what modding should be like, one step at a time, lots of patience and trying to tune it bit by bit until you are satisfied with the end result.
Hey, user! Thanks for the comment! Have you considered checking out the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a compact and versatile cleaning tool that can help you maintain a spotless environment on your desk, in your car, and more. With powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities, it's definitely worth considering! Let me know if you have any other questions or need further recommendations. Happy tech-talking!
This was great to watch, loved the iteration and side by side as you progressed. Looking forward to trying these out myself.
Awesome demonstration of so many different mods! Great to hear so many different sound tests.
When you said coming soon, you really werent kidding . Loved the step by step sound comparisons! The touch with the SA spacebar at the end *chefs kiss*
haha yeah the SA spacebar is just a magic bar
You never seem to disapoint
Thanks for this! I did the two tape mods and it's gotten rid of the ping! Now the keychron is sounding waaay better!
im so glad you added an SA spacebar clip at the end, it literally sounds like a masterpiece
This is really helpful, definitely going to be looking into this for my personal build on the channel :)
Dude you are magician. You took a board which sounded pretty horrible + super hollow - and made it pop and sound like a premium keyboard. Thanks for leading the way again!!
i like to see how you show every mod and improvement in sound. Really guiding how each mod changes the keyboard, especially tape mod! Keep up the content
Great vid bro, love the side by sides and edited steps. Nice work thanks again
Your tape is very precise, makes me wanna redo mine. Great video
I like how you edited the video to show progression after each mod. very easy to follow. Would like to see a comparison of each mod vs stock but I understand if that takes considerably more effort.
Hey there, I've been using the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule for a while now and it has been a game-changer for keeping my desktop and keyboard clean. The vacuuming power is impressive, and the blowing function is great for dusting off hard-to-reach areas. It's definitely worth considering for your cleaning routine!
This was great! I need to find time to try this during winter break. Cheers.
Wow... the level of preparation and presentation in the video is amazing. This must have taken a long time to make. Great job~~
Was waiting for this Vid, since you always do such good mods for Keyboards, am not disappointed
Going from sounding like you're typing on a literal frying pan to a fairly decent sound, what a glowup.
Thanks wildcat, I'll use this video as reference to mod my Q1 once it's arrive :3
Great mod, it almost eliminates the case pinging sound. except for the the side and arrow area.
There is no save for those.
The SA spacebar is so thocc.
Dang I love how detailed your mods have been in this video! Great work as always! uwu
Now it sounds very, very nice! I had never used tape and I see it makes a huge difference. I will try tomorrow on my Snowfox (very first keyboard, now half destroyed by cats...lol).
Tape is very efficient for modding, I love it
I have Q1 on the way, and thank you for this :3ildcat, I hope it'll sound similar since I will follow the modding that you've did. Great as always!
Good luck!
Amazing! You really have the magic touch :)
Would you please consider making a wire balancing tutorial? I always struggle with it and a detailed guide with your tools and methods would be so helpful! Thank you for everything you do. ☺️
Maybe this part czcams.com/video/B1TodVGvF2g/video.html
good stabs very rarely need to be balanced
I think employing the iPhone 4 method is key.
You really don’t need to worry about wire balancing. So many keyboard builder never balanced the wire in their life and they have made hundreds of boards a year. Just do the holee mod and you never need to worry about it again
@@tombaker2510 I've seen a bended wire from a new keyboard before so you're not really convincing
omg the PBT sounds so good
You just made all percussionists very proud
You have always been one of my favorite keyboard content creators. Real craftsmanship. Way better than hippyotech. What kind of name is that anyway?
I just bought my first nicer keyboard, a Corsair k100, and it got me thinking that I might like to build a custom unit soon. But I'm not so sure. I'll hold off for a while. This Corsair is a massive upgrade from my last one, and I like it a lot. I am not sure I have the patience to mod or build a board. Especially with all the options for switches and key caps and mods and lubing and stabilizers. For now I'll call it a little overwhelming. But this video was great and I thank you for showing the process and the differences as you made small changes step by step.
Silicone tape prices going to skyrocket now! I have to try it out for myself! Great work as usual
haha if so, sad Good luck and thank you for your great support, takoyakeys!!

The attention to detail is insane-on the keyboard and the editing of this video… like… jesus
Since I’m listening with headphones at full blast, I can hear ping especially on the right cluster above arrows. I was just wondering if this is noticeable irl/in person? Often times mics pick up subtle nuances/details in sound tests that get drowned out in person. Sound tests are often times boosted as well. Additionally, this is the only sound test w tape mod, different foam/damper material than stock, and some material near the screw holes in between the two case halves that I have heard ping. So I am just thinking that it’s the recording setup/settings and that the ping is barely noticeable, if at all, in person. Lastly, have you ever tried polyfill as a damper?
there is still a ringing sound on the right side of the board that you can hear starting around 9 min. this still is a very impressive modding and based on the typing tests, a huge improvement from the start
Just when I thought it couldn't sound any better, it did
Ngl, that Korean stab mod is really interesting, never seen it before
Omg thats sounds so good now. Far than before
I used double sided adhesive tape inside my keyboard with few holes in it. It sounds great!
i just bought my keychron q1 so this video is helpful
love the vid
That SA spacebar is delicious!
Nice work and sound. I like you video edit. What transitions did you use in splitscreen before-after comparison shots?
Love the sound of the GMK Olivia caps. Such a satisfying video.
So niceeeeee. What a difference… you can tell how much experience :3ildcat has building boards he knows p much just how much he needs 😱
gawd damn the sa spacebar
awesome review.. good information and mods that would be beneficial to someone who wants to get this keyboard..like myself .hehe. keep up the great VDOs
this guys knows more than a company how to make products
The additional mods do a great job, but from my experience a third layer of PCB tape removes pretty much all audible pinging even without changing the case foam. It could also just be that my switches being different affect the sound as well.
Case ping can't be fixed by the PCB taping tho. Different sound source in my opinion
For me additional foam (provided by keychron) and two layers of silicon tape on the base around the holes eliminated the ping.. Thanks to keybored and wildcat!
Hello! This might be a bit late but had a question about the mod. Just bought the Q1 pro and was wondering if you think the tape mod still works on this even though there is a battery in it? I am thinking of getting non-conductive tape for that reason. Also, when doing the tape mod, do you remove the case foam that goes between PCB?
Damnnnnnn that's exactly what I want my Q1 to sound like
holy shit that sounds so amazing
I did tape mod along with adding moon gel instead of silicone tape. That along with gmks and it sounds fantastic. I believe it was designed to filter higher freqs on drums and cymbals.
They don't filter anything. They just shorten the sustain of the batter head of the drum, so the often ugly resonance disappears. Kind of chokes out the head after the initial transient.
Great video! I'm new to mechanical keyboards, the keyboard I'm using now is MX Keys but I don't like the feel after some hours of usage, would you consider using Gateron Phantom Browns, I'm really interested in those, and I would like to know how they sound with those mods.
that SA Spacebar is for eargaaaaasm
GMMK PRO
i think for the Q1 the polyfill mod is the best for dampening the sound.
Once i tried it literally all the ping was gone, and it doesn't remove too much of the flex either. I also switched the stock plate out for a PC plate so that probably helped with the resonacne too. Super happy with the Q1, might even buy a second one just to do a boba U4T build
Yeah, I tried all everything but still ended up using Alexotos' mod since it sounded best for me too!
Could electrical tape be used instead of silicone tape? (assuming its cut into thin strips to neatly fit on the edges inside the case)
Yoo this keyboard looks great
beautiful.
As soon as a volume encoder comes in, I'll buy it. In the meantime, my GMMK Pro will serve me better. The gasket mount on the Keychron Q1 is way better.
I have a important question, does the silicone gasket tape you used glue on both sides or just one? I can’t seem to find one sided gasket tape that is that small
beautiful
do u think the silicone gasket tape is really necessary? should i buy some for my q1 if i dont have it already or should I just use the masking tape i have
Hey, do you have a video where you show what RGB with Phantom Reds looks like? I've only seen some comments about it here and there.
I had an old mouse mat about 2mm thickness which i cut to shape and used as the dampener. Works pretty well.
Tape is life. Your editing continues to inspire me :3ildcat. Great video :)
Thanks ❤️
Is it worth modding the built-in stabs? Or should I rather buy new ones like the durock v2?
Is it safe to tape mod the PCB for long term use? Does the tape glue wear off after several months usage?
Keyboard hobby will never be the same. A lot of people will be saving their money with these mods.
This a whole asmr video
wow, the tape mod really works. when I first heard of it i thought it was another stupid mod that some random person decided to make, but now that I try it on my keeb I love this mod and I will use it for the rest of my projects!
Mountain Everest Max
I used a sheet of 0.6mm thick adhesive backed silicone sheet on the back of the pcb and it transformed my q1. Thoccythocthud now.
thank you ive been trying to get rid of ping noise and the tape helped so much now when i hit the metal it sounds like im hitting my desk no metal sound
Question: What is thickness of the gasket poron that you put on the plate later?
I know this old but what keycap set is the first one? Looks awesome, I want to get that set for my Q1v2
hey wild cat, do you recommend a layer or 2 layers of tape?
Wow the tape makes that board sound way better, might have to consider getting that over a wooden tofu60
I recommend tofu65 over this and tofu60
Hi 3ildcat! Thanks for the video.
I had a question - what does adding the small foam bits at 5:50 do?
If you're talking about the little foam blocks he puts on the sides of the plate, those are the gaskets. It's what allows the board to have that soft flexing feeling, and it's pretty much what makes this keyboard special.
the q1 is an awesome board, remove the ping and you are good to go. It's quite easy to do as well. Force break mod :)
I've just bought one fully assembled for the convenience, but this is making me think about doing something to it...
Worth mentioning that the Q1 V2 fixed the case ping and brought additional improvements.
Amazing vid!! What if you didn't or can't find Silicon Gasket, what would you use as a substitute instead?
does it make a big difference if you don't lube the stabs?
ooh nice
its so marbly i cant get enough of it
After you tested out Keychron Q1, would you recommend buying Q1 or GMMK Pro as a starter keyboard? Expect I will not do any modding, or only simple modding tricks.
Haven't tried GMMK Pro but both would be good enough to have fun mods but if you don't plan any mods.. no idea.
Does putting a sa spacebar on cherry profile keycaps uncomfortable?
Can someone please explain what he is doing? I'm interested in this modding of keyboards but I don't hear any difference on the sounds.
