They had to try and compensate for how fragile the rims were because they would shatter. Breakaway rims weren't invented until 1979.
Back in the day ... This was the greatest exhibition ever seen in pro basketball. If you were to watch the worlds best skateboarders at time, you wouldn't see any tricks that are as impressive as you would see at any skateboard park today. Things evolve .. Laughing at the pioneers who laid the foundation of the game today is childish.
