Ben Stiller was already an accomplished director at this point in his career, having previously directed "Reality Bites," "The Cable Guy" and "Zoolander," all of which had big name actors in the cast (including Stiller himself), were popular upon release, and have been profitable. They also all received a somewhat mixed reception from critics upon release, but have since become cult classics on home media and streaming. "Tropic Thunder" was a big hit upon release (and ultimately profitable), topping the box office for three weeks straight in its opening run. Critics also lauded it, surprisingly, and now its a cult classic too!
