Lot of people knocking Mike Douglas...But if it wasn't for daytime TV shows like Mike Douglas, Dick Cavette and Doris Day...believe it or not, it was about the only way to see some of these bands from the late 60's to mid 70's. They gave many of these bands a chance for exposure on national TV, because there was no social media, you had variety shows in the evening like Ed Sullivan and Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, there were a few more over the years, but daytime shows had the more obscure acts on. These bands toured, but if you weren't old enough to see them as I was only 8-9 when this was on TV, you only read about them in magazines, heard them on the radio and bought their records...So in many ways people like Mike Douglas were pioneers for exposing new and fresh talent in a time when they didn't understand the culture but were open-minded enough to understand the scope of what was happening around them.
Blue Cheer did a memorable two song set on Steve Allen's show in 1968. Summertime Blues at crushing volume started it, and later in the show when Allen reintroduced them before they erupted into a thundering "Out of Focus" he said: Once again, Blue Cheer....run for your life."
It's great to hear all the beautiful acoustic guitar work by Peter Lewis in the background. He and Jerry Miller pretty much composed the sound of the band and it's still beautiful.
+pcsbeat --Yes, it is, and as great of a guitar player Jerry Miller was (and still is), the lead guitar on that song was played by Peter Lewis. There were so many songs on that first LP that could've been hits.... if they had been released ONE AT A TIME!! (Talkin' to you, Matthew Katz..... crappy idea to release them all at once... one could possibly get away with that today, but not then....)
It's okay, Mike Douglas had them on. Very cool and I don't care if he called them the Moby Grapes. Kinda ads a little fun to it all. And there they are... um... such a missed moment in musical time. They were so good.
One of the great unsung bands of all time. Their manager killed their career and may Mathew Katz rot in the deepest parts of hell. Love live the Grape. Wish I had seen them.
One nite in Lake Tahoe, my friends & I were laying on the floor, right in front of the stage smoking reefer while The Grape were playing & J Spense jumps off the stage & joins us...right in the middle of a song! Blew us away... lol
In spite of the poor sound quality, you can tell how incredibly tight they were. Other than the Beau Brummels, they were the most underrated unsung bands to come out of SF.
Cool Video thanks for posting. Grape was another band from the 60's that had so much talent like the Buffalo and just didn't make that next step. Mike Douglas show always had on great bands and his shows with Sly Stone were epic. Sly's wardrobe alone were worth the view.
It's wonderful to see Moby Grape playing live. Too bad the engineers on the show couldn't get the sound any better, and of course they had to add the idiotic psychedelic effects on Omaha, but through all of that the genius of the band shows through clearly. Thanks for posting this!
Not entirely the engineers. Skip's mic is pointed away from his mouth and that's why you can't hear his lead vocal on "Omaha". I don't think that was their doing.
Jerry Miller is touring today with Eilen Jewell. Saw him last night at The Ark in Ann Arbor. Easily the best guitarist I have ever seen. What a pleasure!!
Steve Schuster What a treat, Jerry Miller is one of my favorite guitarist too! Last time I saw him was in San Francisco at the 40th Anniversary of The Summer of Love Concert 2007. Moby Grape reformed & Skip's son filled in for his dad. They were fabulous!
Steve Schuster The Jerry Miller who plays with Eilen Jewel is not the Jerry Miller who used to be in Moby Grape. He's an awesome guitarist in his own right, but it's not the same guy.
Favorite!!!!! thx for this "clip". "Please change your mind", "do you think you could try"..... have said these words in life.... always 8:05, "guess you're leaving, Good bye.
Yes, but Mike was really good about getting fresh bands on his show. Keep in mind that his audience was mostly stuffy, middle aged people in the late 60's.
this is really cool despite the poor mix. After the moby grape imploded Jerry Miller would play as a trio around Santa Cruz. I saw him perform numerous times at the ucsc quarry ampitheater. Good Times!
Thanks QSD! Took some nads to post that, but truly some of the BEST worst footage I have ever seen, was clear as a bell in my head brah! Far too many are not familiar with Moby Grape, even tho alamost everyone from this era knows this tune, Omaha, just never realized where it came from,,,plus, 8:05 is one of my lifetime favs man...Thanks! Anytime...take care!
What for god sakin good music: don't get tired to collect the originals. ( just a2 ) 8.05; well, ,is there any band that can create something like this.,it's on my list when i hit the wrong side of the gras......

This video omits the full beginning. Saw this band live at Mothers Club, Erdington, Birmingham, England.
I don't think Mike Douglas had a clue what music was about back then. Douglas was from the big band era. I was in a band called The Creative Images and a club owner once referred to us as "The Create Of Image".
A great, incredibly tight band, with everyone able to swing their axes (Peter Lewis takes the lead very capably on 8:05), they all sang, had some rockin' material ... but drugs, man! ... drugs. Bob Mosley -- I never heard a voice like his, but he developed schizophrenia. Arguably the best band to come out of the Bay Area, but they were star-crossed for sure.
Skip Spence developed schizophrenia from doing so much Speed & Acid. Bob Mosley's voice is still great, he's the bass player. Jerry Miller just played SF this month. He is the lead singer on 8:05 & was & still is an incredible lead guitarist.

I think only 3 groups could match there talent on all levels,as far as tightly conceived groups go...BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD,THE BAND,and maybe the BYRDS,only with this special band, all of them can sing lead, write tunes, produce, and all can play well.Still very criminally underated, just like all the groups I listed above.
Ha,ha.Oh yeah .You know your stuff Ben.I have MOBY GRAPE '69,and LISTEN MY FRIENDS;;The best of Moby Grape for all those singles they did for movies, and unheard releases, too.they were truly one of a kind.
This is (1) an important video of an important band, and (2) a fine example of how little the mainstream media thought of this genre of music back then. Mike Douglas (who I actually liked back then, as a tv-host, and frankly I still have no grudge against Mike ... he was just typical of the era; he had a lot of great artists on his shows) ... actually walked into the middle of "8:05", a fine tune, played live here, in this instance. Jerry Miller is one of America's greatest guitarists.
They were actually a pretty good band. This was one of the loudest songs I ever heard performed live. Saw them live at the Mothers Club in Erdington, Birmingham (UK).
"A pretty good band." All of the best bands in the City thought they were great, the Airplane, Dead, Quicksilver, Big Brother and they were on record (no pun) as saying so. Matthew Katz destroyed them
A lot of people loved Moby Grape but I don't recall a whole lot of people thinking one band or another were the "best." Most of us were pretty amazed with a lot of bands who were all amazing. The Airplane, Dead, Quicksilver, Big Brother, Buffalo Springfield, Steve Miller, Paul Butterfield, the Charlatans and the other ten or twenty I'm not listing. I personally loved Grape and while we were both living in the Outer Outer Richmond their roadie and I became friends, circa '69. Michael had a tape, 2 track, from New Years '67 with Moby Grape, Lee Michaels and I think the Messenger Service. We fantasized with doing a bootleg until Katz came up.@@Charles-bo8wh
Wasn't 'Omaha' about 'Omaha Beach' on D-Day? 'Listen my friend,Ii'll see you in Heaven'. what a great song. Three guitars a- twangin' and groovy vocals all racing to an explosion of sound. I recently re-bought this fantastic album. Wish I was living out west when all this was happening. Santa Cruz, here I come!
Jerry Miller lead guitarist of Moby Grape has a new Kickstarter campaign...... please check it and his new website out. Let's support real music and real musicians! www.thejerrymillerband.com
@TheQuicksilverdog WOW where did you find this??? It is a time machine. Moby Grape was out on the limb with the rest of us here in San Francisco. When it's live you know it ain't jive.
Why was it so damn important for the TV execs. to add on all the visual effects back then? I'm a product of the 60's and always laughed at this kind of shit. They should have just shown the groups
Lot of people knocking Mike Douglas...But if it wasn't for daytime TV shows like Mike Douglas, Dick Cavette and Doris Day...believe it or not, it was about the only way to see some of these bands from the late 60's to mid 70's. Smothers Brothers! lol ! I feel ya Joe, was amazing time!
Frank Zappa was on Steve Allen in 1963 playing a bicycle....no joke!
I saw Earth Wind and Fire live via the Mike Douglas Show albeit in ancient times.
The amazing thing about this clip is that it's live, not lip-synced.

Killer!
Real musicians can do that
I had this song in my head for many years. Those were the days ! One of my top three SF bands.
It's great to hear all the beautiful acoustic guitar work by Peter Lewis in the background. He and Jerry Miller pretty much composed the sound of the band and it's still beautiful.

I love the internet for this reason, finding missed music. Sad at the same time
Other "far out" bands that have appeared on the Mike Douglas Show: The Rolled Stones; Jefferson's Airplane; The Queens; The Boy's Beach.
I miss programs like the Mike Douglas show. Really enjoyed moby grape in the sixties.
These guys could come back today and bury all the crap music that’s being forced down our throats. Real talent, real instruments.
And there's a place in hell for Matthew Katz.
one of the most important american bands ever
It's okay, Mike Douglas had them on. Very cool and I don't care if he called them the Moby Grapes. Kinda ads a little fun to it all. And there they are... um... such a missed moment in musical time. They were so good.

Some of the best guitar playing you're likely to hear.
In spite of the poor sound quality, you can tell how incredibly tight they were. Other than the Beau Brummels, they were the most underrated unsung bands to come out of SF.
beau Brummels? They were nothing! So many way better ones!
@@michaelcraig9449moby grape is my favorite band ever and the beau Brussels were fantastic but the charlatans were amazing too
Jerry is one of the VeryBest to ever pick up a guitar.......miss ya Jerry!!!
damz, gonna have me in tears here! I have loved this tune always but this is first time I ever saw them do it live...life is Good!

Steve Schuster really? cool.
Steve Schuster The Jerry Miller who plays with Eilen Jewel is not the Jerry Miller who used to be in Moby Grape. He's an awesome guitarist in his own right, but it's not the same guy.
Sorry to disagree Thom but they are one and the same. I was there with Jerry and Jerry G back in '67
Please change your mind before the sunshine is gone , hey old fire , I guess your leaving goodbye. !!
Great song. It only gets better over time. Heard it first on vinyl long ago and sing it to myself more often than I care to think about.
Peter Lewis amazing !
God I love these guys!!!!!!
Super groovy band! Love it! Thanks for posting!
8:05 alive and a great jive! Saw them in TO. in 67-68 ish, One of my fav bands.
"Goofy color switch?" I thought it was the flashbacks they promised me I'd have.
They said there'd be flashbacks! Well, "they" lied! With all the acid I took, I never had a free trip!
Still classic....
Outstanding.
love Mr. Spence...
the chemistry of these guys is amazing
Priceless!
Thnx so much,Quicksilverdog.
They were a phenomenal band!
8:05 is such a beautiful song. They had it going big time.
love this band
If I could only take one album with me to a desert island, it would be Skip Spence's Oar - full album. He wrote the best MB songs.
The Turtle, The Jefferson's Airplanes, The Byrd, Beau's Brummel. . . . .

I equate the blown-mindedness of hearing Omaha for the 1st time, with my first hearing of I Want to Hold Your Hand or Born to Run.
The Moby Grapes!
Douglas introduced them as "… The Moby Grapes"!
Hilarious "grapes" .. and Ms. Hunt's offer to pose for Playboy. Priceless.
He was not very Hip back then, LOL!
Never was hip!
hip enough to have them on his show
True that - he got some great acts on his show.
I honestly don't think this guy was ever capable of getting a rock & roll band's name right in his entire career.
Yes, but Mike was really good about getting fresh bands on his show. Keep in mind that his audience was mostly stuffy, middle aged people in the late 60's.

Somewhere in an alternative universe Omaha would be one of the top player songs of the summer of 1967.
