    I was a GA for the Pride of Mississippi that year. Finally getting to experience the Sonic Boom of the South in person was a real treat. Both bands have their own identities and absolutely own them.
    As for who really won the drum battle? Everyone who stayed to see it in person. Thank you, War and Thunder, for your incredible performance!

    Cannot say who is the winner among these 2 bands. Corps style versus Show-style. This is not apples to apples here. Just your chance to see the difference between both styles on one platform. These 2 styles never share the same field making this footage one of the rarest of its kind. Try to search for another one like it on CZcams. Great job on this video.

    So here’s my humble opinion. J-State Pros: visuals are on point licks are clean, and snare line looks and sounds as one. The tenors play with good form and technique ... Cons: the snare drums (the equipment NOT the players) have a very muddy sound to them. No pitch basses. The cadences are very remedial, just a bunch of triplets, 5-strokes and flams. Nothing really technical. The snare players play with good form and technique, they just don’t play anything technical/ complicated...But looking at them play, I can tell they could play very technical pieces if they had them....Solution get the snares some flam heads or just get brand new snares period, add pitch basses for a richer and fuller sound.
    Southern Miss: Pro: plays very technical cadences. The sounds of the cadences are very clean and fuller in tone. Cons: the snare line is too relaxed. Everybody looks like they’re just hanging out, and happening to be playing the same cadence. Even though it sounds good, it looks sloppy. They don’t look as one. No visuals, and the little that they tried, looks like crap. A snare line should look and sound as one. Dont get me wrong USM cadences are grooving, but they have no flare or discipline when playing it. So it falls a little flat. Solution the snare line needs to tighten up and show more discipline when playing, they need to focus on looking and sounding as one. Work on visual presentation.
    So as far as sound goes, if I heard just the audio of this battle, hands down I would give it to USM.... But I didn’t I saw the video of the battle so off of presentation and execution I would have to give it to JSU.....

    • @jhzerro2k12
      @jhzerro2k12 Před 3 lety

      Not disagreeing with your statement it’s the drums I would like the expand on. The reason they may not have tonal basses is from a projection standpoint, that’s why they have chest tenors for a mid bass, the quints/quads do the work of the high\lows within the drumline. Based on the music mostly played r&b/rap/classic r&b , the setup does the job. The snares yes, you are correct - the other dynasty’s they have sound so much cleaner. That’s a lot of maple shell plus a lot of metal on the drum. My opinion is dynastys look good,sound good but struggle with projection. Honestly I believe that WT needs more time to understand how to tune their snare drums. The drums they have are still kinda new. Probably try looking at more vids of both drumline s they might play a lot more than original cadences

      @@terrorblossom4829 I am not a corps person. I grew up playing is the show band style. I was front line snare player all the way up to college.
