  • Arwen is a 14'6" yawl designed by famous New Zealand boat designer, John Welsford. In this video, part three of four, I pack up Arwen, have breakfast at anchor and start our sail back down the Yealm to Plymouth Sound.
I built Arwen over two and a half years in my garage and she was launched in 2010. Since then we have cruised the rivers and coastal waters of South Devon and Cornwall. You can follow our adventures at Arwen's blog www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk or here on her CZcams channel where you can download videos or themed playlists / plymouthwelshboy .
In episode four, we become adrift on Wembury Bay, have a close encounter with a low flying helicopter and then sail back to Plymouth Sound and Wembury bay via Kingsand and Drakes Island.

If you would like me to address a particular dinghy cruising aspect in a forthcoming video - drop me a line below and if you have any nice, constructive, friendly advice to improve my sailing skills, please do let me know and thank you.
Fair winds, good sailing, stay safe and see you out on the water sometime. Thanks for joining us on this voyage.

But all of those chores before morning tea/coffee?
    That's inhuman.
    Beautiful to watch.
    Cheers

Thanks Steve. Very much enjoying this series. You are very organised. I think if Trim went over, most of my kit would be in the drink. Better sort that!

My fear is going over and everything being everywhere. Anchor in particular....I strap mine into a tray which is strapped to the bottom chine ribs....so that it can't fall out if I capsize. Also with an outboard and anchor on starboard side, it's important for trim to balance stuff the port side. I always admire Joel's boat...he seems to have it completely uncluttered whereas Arwen ways looks as if a bomb has hit her 🤣

A sunrise like that is always worth getting up for 😊 I believe that Scottish tradition is to put salt on porridge not sugar - not something which sounds particularly appetising to me but each to their own. There's nothing wrong with carrying one more warp that you think you'll need. They don't take up much space. I agree about the usefulness of a paddle. in addition to oars I carry a "Praddle", which was designed by Ian Proctor. It's designed to used one handed so that you can steer with the other hand and is ideal when you just want to manoeuvre a short distance in light winds. ATB Paula

I don't think I could get my head around salt on porridge 😀. The two long warps always useful I think

Hi Steve. My two pennyworth on 'the great porridge debate' is to re-use one of those resealable adventure dry meal pouches. A couple of table spoons of porridge oats, salt, a heaped teaspoon of milk powder and a handful of sultanas. Pour boiling water in and leave for 7 or 8 mins, then sweeten with golden syrup! Each to their own, but definitely worth a try! Looked like a great morning. 👍 Regards.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I actually edited out me pouring in the sultanas.....always ads them 😀. I carry a. Couple of pots in the galley box permanently along with some camping boil in bag meals so that I can just up and go at a moment's notice .... 😀

I'm a big fan of using canoe paddles - when I had the Hunter Liberty I managed to paddle all the way down the Dart from Bow creek with a bit of tide helping.....and that's a ton and a bit of boat. Trick seems to be to heel the boat a bit and get as far outboard as possible, get over the paddle and just use power strokes. Nice morning btw but I detest porridge........!

Love porridge and love having a paddle on board...always useful ...that was quite some paddle from

"Porridge without sugar, marmite without cheese..." Well, from here in Japan, when I see that seaweed floating with no takers, I see a missed opportunity for a delightful fish soup! Cheers and fair winds, and looking forward to the next bit.
