Boston had one of the best debut albums in history. The 1970's had so many great rock bands. I call it the decade of rock bands. You'll never run out of great songs from the 70's and 80's.

A couple of things ... Tom Sholtz has an electrical engineering degree from MIT ... he refused to use synthesizers ...he developed a line of electronic equipment used throughout the music industry. I suppose they could be 6 string basses, (which nobody was using at that time) but actually, the guitars are six-string, not 4.
Evidenced by the fact there's 6 tuning pegs.

I appreciate the intent of your statement but it's a bit misleading... the Rockman itself is actually a digital synthesizer of sorts, but it was the first one for guitars. Also, there is an organ prominently featured throughout this piece - so it's not 100% guitars. Tom Scholz practically invented 80's guitar sound - Def Leppard used Rockman effects heavily on their Hysteria album - but it doesn't make a guitar sound like an organ.

@Eric_Day84 That is urban legend. First off no tracks from the demo that went to Epic and producer John Boylan were used on this record. This was confirmed by Tom when he was interviewed by people who would know if he was telling the truth or not.
All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. The record was mixed at Westlake Studios by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom.
Boylan had to do a lot more work on Tom's tracks to get them ready for the record to be mixed than Tom has talked about.

In a world being torn apart by unrealistic expectations between men, and women, the song "The Man I'll Never Be" is a Masterpiece track by Boston, which showcases Brad's uniquely
powerful voice in a power ballad that stands the test of time, and demands to be heard by everyone. RIP Brad Delp, who was stated by many to be the kindest man they ever met. Sadly
He took His own life, and I can only imagine that the "emotions" that can't be satisfied, sung by Him in this track, were part of the reason why. Certainly requires an introspective listen.

This album is widely considered to be one of the greatest debut albums in rock music history. Everything on it is fire. And I really like the sequencing on it. It wouldn't be too late for you guys to work your way through it because you started with the first song on the album and then you skipped forward a few songs. You can go back and pick up where you left off with the second song, Peace of Mind, and then skip this one when you get to it and finish the album out. I have seen a lot of reactors do this and it's always highly engaging.
I was lucky enough to see Boston on this tour in 1977 and they were fantastic. It really was an absolutely incredible show. And the singing was just as solid as on the album, everything was. It was in a medium-sized indoor venue and the ticket price was $7.50 including all taxes and fees, lol.

Boston had such a unique sound because Tom Scholz not only wrote arranged and played most of the instrumental tracks, but also designed and built the effects equipment on this album. And this album was recorded in the basement of Tom's apartment. Back in the day and up to today people in search of a record deal will do what the label says. The label wanted to record at their studio in L.A. Tom refused. He wanted to do it in the basement. The rep started lo leave tom's apartment but stopped at the door and said "O.k. you record the tracks here. We'll mix them in L.A." Tom paused for a few seconds in shock. The most killer track, and most overshadowed, is the single Smokin. It lives up to its title. It is very impressive and the guitar work is epic. It is a fantastic starter to this group. Hard to believe this group only did 3 albums. Their final one, released in '86, yielded their only #1 single - a ballad - titled Amanda. This debut also includes the showcase Piece of Mind and More Than A Feeling

Brad Delp’s vocals are often imitated but never equalled. Boston used hand claps better than any band I’ve ever heard. Pure fire, song after song. One of the best selling debut albums EVER. The whole album deserves a track by track reaction. The essence of 1970’s rock. 🔥🔥

It’s hard to beat Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. Tom Scholz was a musical genius who graduated from MIT. He actually invented the siren box that plugs into his guitar that’s why the guitar sounds so different than anyone else. Tom actually played all the instruments on this album in his basement in the beginning. And that is Brad Delp absolutely killing the vocals like The Prodigy he was.

I'm way late here, but Tom Shotz built his own amplifiers, his own studio recording equipment, and effects pedals, including the one of one hyperspace pedal that makes all the space noises. He was an electronic engineer for Polaroid. He wrote the songs and played every instrument except the drums and had his friend Brad Delp sing - recording all but one track on the album in his basement studio. The band was just a touring band. He was hyper sensitive to others banking off of his work so much, that the record company tried to force him to use a producer and he fired him immediately after the producer suggested they split production royalties. He was told by every record company he approached that rock was dead and it would go nowhere because it was 1976 and Disco was all the craze, not rock. It's still considered the greatest debut album in history. Then, after making it big, he started his own music effects company called Rockman, which he sold in the past few years. He gave most of his money away to charity. When I saw them, live, in the 1990's, every amp on stage was hand built by Tom.

Lots of people don't seem to understand that the first Boston album was, like the first Village People album which came out at the same time, not done by what would become the groups. The first album was written, produced and had most of the instruments played by the group's founder Syd.
