  • Dearest Friends,
Remember the Rega P1 vs Sony PS-HX500 vs Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC $450, 3-pronged turntable fight out two years ago :-D?
Well the winner by a huge margin, the P1, has since been bought and adopted by many friends here, and they HAVE successfully "retro"fitted the crazy excellent Nagaoka MP-110 on their P1s, and forwarded me private photos taken of their set-ups, and how they have been able to achieve that - ADJUSTING the seemingly unadjustable Anti-Skating Force to cater to the lower body weight and tracking force of the MP-110 (lower than the factory settings for the stock Rega Carbon cartridge), AND, - NOT worrying about the VTA/Stylus Rake Angle despite not adding any tonearm height spacer.
The stock P1 is an excellent foundation and most recommended from me, to start one's vinyl journey. Despite it sporting a cheaper AT-3600L in its "Carbon" guise, the stock P1 crazily beats the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC with a US$100 Ortofon 2M Red. Much then have to be attributed, rightly so, to:
    1. Rega's very smooth and yet low freeplay tonearm movement,
    2. its quiet 24V motor compared to its rivals,
    3. its supremely tight central spindle versus hub housing structure (try lifting off the spindle-platter away from the plinth-housing, and then, try to put back the spindle-platter into the plinth-housing again. You will know what I mean).
The P1 is a great and affordable start to a person's vinyl journey, and one great and fun turntable to stay with, and with lots of upgrade (read: FUN) options along the way :-D !!!
Today’s instalment is done for the many friends here emailing me for information which other P1 users and friends have gathered in their ownership. These very kind friends have emailed me private photos of how they have installed the excellent MP-110 onto their P1 and thus for a total cost of $580, achieved a colossal degree of analogue music standards. Add the Schiit Mani, at $130, and,
    - as many emailed me to say: “the holy trio of budget phono gear!”
The two key matters of contention, are 1)how to adjust down the (seemingly fixed by Rega) anti-skating force, and 2) would the Stylus Rake Angle still be okay without putting in any tonearm height spacer. I have thus decided to make a full illustrated tutorial on how a successful MP-110 installation go about.
    Part One: illustrated tutorial
A: Adjusting the Anti-Skating Force to suit the Nagaoka MP-110,
B: Stylus Rake Angle - good enough without any tonearm height spacer added?
Part Two:Sound Quality increment from the stock Rega Carbon cartridge to the Nagaoka MP-110.
Thank you friends for your time and kindness given to me all these past four years.
I am enjoying the friendship, warmth and energy. Thank you so much!……
    Best Regards,
    ~ ian

Thank you Ian. I’ve just finished this upgrade and my budget Rega P1 is now sounding like a much more expensive turntable.
Now I need to save my pennies for the Schiit mani phono pre-amp to make my system truly sing.
Thanks again - wouldn’t have attempted this without your video with very precise instructions.

Just an update on my experience with these settings. I’ve found that a distance of 25mm (rather than 27mm) on the anti-skating magnet worked better for my TT. Perhaps my magnet was slightly stronger than on Ian’s P1 TT.

I used this guide on a Rega P2 and Nagaoka MP-110.
I was having problems with the cart skipping and I was really annoyed. Everyone I asked suggested it was a VTA problem, but it's seen this video so was sure it wasn't. I spent 15 minutes doing these quick changes and aligned the cart with a better protractor than what Rega supply; total night and day difference.
Thank you so much for this video. I'd be wasting money on VTA spacers if it wasn't for you spending the time to post this.

OMG! Thank you so much for this instructive video! I've had my MP-110 for almost a year and didn't make the anti skate adjustment, and so many records were skipping! I thought it was the cartridge, but it was the anti skating adjustment. Not only are there no skips, my MP-110 sounds LOTS better! Thank you!!

Hello Ian thank you so much for the wonderful instructional vids you create, having owned my linn sondek from new for some 35 yrs and in the past my dealer always helped me choose and fit a new cartridge I was faced with doing this myself as my last cartridge was worn out and very old and no dealers near me that I could take it to, so armed with a mirrored protractor and a digital stylus force guage I successfully fitted a nagoaka mp110 and am extremely happy with it, i thank you again James.

Good afternoon Ian. Many many thanks for this very informative video. I do not play a lot of vinyl (time constraints, work, life in general!) but I'd been having issues with my planar 1 I have had for a few years, records skipping, always backwards. Research identified that, sometimes, the pre-set bias on the RB110 can be the isue. Today I followed your instructions and re-set the bias magnet to 29mm (using my vernier calipers). I set to 29mm as I have the original carbon cartridge and thought I'd see how it went at that. After the change I played 3 albums which, before, had alwas skipped backwards. I had been getting to the point of thinking that my return to vinyl was a mistake, the deck too fussy etc. Now there is light and I may even consider the upgrade to the MP110 in the near future. Thank you again for your detailed video and taking the time to do it. Very best wishes from the Highlands of Scotland. Richard.

Oh my goodness I don't know how to thank you enough for this guide! I changed the cartridge of my Rega Planar 1 from the stock Carbon to a Bias 2 and while there is a very stark improvement in sound, the anti-skate was way too strong (or too weak? not sure) for the recommended tracking force of the cartridge. But thanks to this video, I was able to adjust the anti-skating of the RB101 tonearm, something that I think shouldn't have been possible! I'd love to drop by your store next time I'm in Singapore for comic con! 😁

Such a great video, I wish I’d viewed a few years ago it would’ve saved me a lot of time! I tried changing to the MP10 but the stylus kept jumping around so eventually gave up. These days I’ve got installed the Rega Bias 2, noticeably better than the carbon, but as you say not quite up to the level of the MP10.
If I may, I’d suggest a way of altering the tracking force magnet without the fuss of removing the whole tone arm unit. equip yourself with a long pair of tweezers, secure the tone arm to the centre of the platter and carefully locate and pull free the magnet cylinder, apply blue tack as instructed above. Also an alternative to the blue tack and mm by mm adjustment you made to the magnet cylinder is to add a small disc magnet on top of the existing magnet cylinder head, check the tracking, if it’s still needs adjustment add another one! Overall the sound improvements you’ve suggested are tangible. Equally so changing to a better machined Tangospinner sub platter. All the best Ian and many thanks for all your tips.

@@HiViNywschannel thank you for the response! I don't have the mani atm. I got a chance to buy my dream speakers. MB Quart 2000. They are so good paired with the right amp and setup. I love them.
The mani is on my short list though!
One thing I have discovered is that the little glass fuses in the equipment when changed to ceramic... make all the difference..
Vp concepts made a video about it and I decided to try it and the biggest change is that the music became deeper and meatier and a lot more planted, hard to describe haha.
Apparently some high end manufactures accutly use ceramic fuses out of the factory! It is such a little and cheap change that does a lot! If you ever feel the urge to try something. Replace the fuses! Just check the power connection at the back of the item and you should see a little black tab where it sits. Really easy I would not have thought it would work but that is the best thing of this journey. Try to get the most and the best out of the equipment you own to get the best sound you can!
      Best regards! :)

Great video! Only one thing. When comparing the cartridges, the volume seems clearly louder for the 110. You have to match the volume extremely carefully to do an accurate comparison A difference of even a half a dB will subjectively make the louder one seem "better". The difference in volume in your video sounds more like 2 or 3 dB! I am a professional sound engineer and am used to listening to these kinds of differences. It makes me wonder if you did that on purpose in order to exaggerate the difference. I am in no position to judge your honesty, but if you don't tend to such details, it puts it in question. I am not questioning whether the 110 is a better cartridge than the Carbon. I am just pointing out that not matching volumes, confuses your point except for those that don't know better.

    • @artvandelay5782

      Totally agree.
I actually had to stop listening to the comparison halfway through because the MP110 was indeed tonally better but the clearly changing volume kept making me 'feel' like I was being sold somthing....
Even tho I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND that different cartridges give different pk-pk outputs.
It really needed to be perfectly leveled so as to let the tone sell the sound....

    HOW TO REMOVE THE MAGNET
I guess, Ian was just lucky. I tried removing it same way he did, but it wouldn't come out and after some googling I learned, that the magnet is actually glued in and not supposed to come out that easily. So what I needed to do was:
    a) get some pliers which allow a grip as firm as possible on the magnet, so the inside better be rippled and the tips very small
    b) try turning the magnet in a wiggling motion and pull at the same time. I slipped off a couple of times.
Eventually the magnet came loose, but even without the glue holding it in place, it wouldn't slide out as easily as in the video. I still had to grab it with the pliers to get it fully out.
Hope this helps some who might feel discouraged after watching the video and finding out, that it isn't as smooth sailing as it looks.

    Dear Ian
Thanks to your dedication and hard work, you have shown that you do not have to spend ridiculous sums of money to enjoy music. Simply put, new budget concious audiophiles should start off with a good turntable and cartridge combination, one that will preserve and protect your precious vinyls. The rest of the system, the amplifier, speakers and other accessories, can be inexpensive purchases at first but later on, when funds becomes available, upgraded to bigger and better equipment.
In the meantime, I await your next video with eager anticipation.

Ian - so glad I discovered your channel. I love your extremely thorough reviews and unbiased opinion. My only regret is not discovering your channel sooner. I have no doubt, the out-of-the-box package you are recommending provides the best bang for the buck P1 + MP-110 + Schiit Mani. For people like me, who have already invested in other gear, perhaps for your next series of videos you could investigate how we can upgrade or if its possible to salvage our investments. My current setup is a Project Debut Carbon DC with the acrylic platter and Ortofon Blue cartridge and a Parks Audio Budgie phono stage. Although I had to spend much more money upgrading my system, I'd be curious to see how it stacks up against $700 package. As for phono stages, the Budgie is now out of production, but I see it recommended quite a bit in the forums. Would love to see how the Schiit mani compares to a Budgie stock, Budgie with Gold Lion 6922 tubes and also see if you can revisit the PHO 701 with Gold Lion 6922 tubes. I had heard it really opens up nicely with different tubes. My next TT is going to be a Technics SL-1200GR or G. Can't wait to fall in love with my vinyl again.

Hi! Tested with Planar 2 and setting at 27mm with arm floating It doesn't even move the arm (there is no anti-skating force att all!). I tested also a Goldring E2 tracking at 2g and the factory preset anti-skating resulted in a good tracking, from outer to inner groves (actually, I pulled the magnet just a little). Lowering bias gave me distortion (tested through headphone). Anyway, it is a very instructive video and will help a lot of people with this respectable deck.

Hi Ian, So glad to see you back with a great video. Still very happy with MP-110 on my second Technics. I find myself listening to records with that setup quite often. Very relaxed and unemphasized, likely the very best pickup in its price range. And it already has a lot of the quality foundation the MP-500 shines with. Since I have discovered Nagaoka years agi, I don't see the point of low output MC's anymore. For me, this as good as it gets.
What an effort to determine the correct condition on the P1. I am so glad that I have my Technics - sooo much easier to swap cartridges. :)

But don't MC cartridges have access to a full balance signal when used with a balanced phono pre like the Project SB3?

    • @phonatic
      @phonatic Před rokem

@@klepp19 Yes, I would think so too. And to my understanding, it's indeed all determined by the phono-preamp, not necessarily the type of pickup. An MC cartridge delivers its signal the same way an MM or MI does with differences in strength and EMF sensitivity.
So, in some scenarios, goign the MC route might be better. For me, both types work fine and the MP-500 is still going strong.

Where was this video when I needed it ? This is very much what I needed some time ago, when I decided to upgrade from the Carbon. I found various sources, but none put it all in one place e like this. Great job !
This is the same combo I have. Riga could simply have made a slider mechanism to allow anti-skating adjustment with the magnet. Once you figure it out, then of course you end up doing a MacGyver job.
I have a rather thick mat on my platter, so I went the cheap route and used simple washers to raise the arm. In between the washers, I used double-sided tape to reduce the risk of any added vibration. I've rewired my tonearm with a copy of Cardas, which also included a proper ground wire. So now my wires go straight from head shell to my Mofi phono-preamp.
Overall, nice sounding set-up, but since stock Carbon days, I have a low hum through the speakers. Not audible at normal volumes or from my seating position, but still something I'd love to be gone.
My P1 will eventually end up in my 2nd system, connected to a mid-60's Sansui integrated, once I decide on what will live in the main system.

Hi Ian, as my P1 may become my Frankenstein table in which to continue to try different mods, I was thinking to add Dynamat to the underside of the table. When I had my car speakers done, I asked for a full mat, and they gave it to me. Unfortunately my P1 sits close to, but behind my right speaker, and was thinking extra damping wouldn't hurt. As for next TT, I am intrigued by the upcoming table from Schitt. My upgrades since we were last in touch has been the Mofi phono-preamp (the cheaper one) and my speakers are now Focal Kanta 2's.

    • @HiViNywschannel
      @HiViNywschannel  Před 5 lety

@@larrypupkin dear Buddy💪😄👍doing well, doing very well you are!!! Wow new Kanta speakers! Dynamat, I'm looking at it now. Perhaps just stick it as a supporting layer on the rack on which the 3 feet of the P1 rests...as Roy Gandy's design principle would be: a lightweight plinth, so that it doesn't impact upon the bigger mass platter. (He explained it well in the book "The Measurment Machine"). And if there is anything to take away resonances, it would be done BEFORE the plinth, that is: the feet, the isolation platform/rack😄✌. I thus suggest that your Dynamat not be stuck directly on the underside of the plinth, but just be a mat on which the 3 feet of the P1 turntable rests on.
      Cheers cheers ✌😄✌

I just followed this with my P1 and at ATVM95ML. Prior to adjusting the anti skate it would constantly get stuck on really good records. The VTF on the ML is lighter than the standard rega at 1.8-2.2g. I used a distance of 30mm for the magnet it works a charm. No more sticking and my records sound much quieter as they aren't try to fight the groove anymore. My next turntable will absolutely not be a Rega. It will be a technics that I can adjust fully and interchange carts easily. Rega's look pretty but every planet has to align to play music well
