I so agree with Hopper's point of view. Your style will evolve out of the sum of your experiences, influences, experiments and just, plain luck and that takes time.

Nothing short from outstanding. While most you tubers focus on gear etc, you focus on the "practice" of photography and thoroughly research past photographers who practiced photography. Thank you so much for your work!

This was a great video! I think with all of the stimulation we are bombarded with and constant pressure to be unique or innovative, we can sometimes get down on ourselves and our work. I think it’s important to keep the process as simple as possible. Experiment, find what you like, figure out why you like it, and then pursue that. And if your taste and style starts to change, be comfortable with that and continue the hunt. Cheers T

Since I started watching your videos I have concentrated on getting back into shooting again. I put my camera down a few years ago because I ran out of love. I lost love for shooting because of popularity. I wanted a photo that would make it big. Now from listening to you and watching your videos, I found out that's not what I was shooting for. I started shooting for the people instead of myself. Now I want to create art not just pictures. Thank you for your videos and the research you put into other artist to inspire me to grab my camera and shoot again. I've realized that it takes awhile to capture what it is that people will respond to. And maybe some day someone will find my work and exploit it to the world. Thanks.

Been really diving deep inward lately to figure out what my style is, what’s not working with my work right now and why I don’t feel connected to it…your reminder of our style being from our personal experiences in life instead of just an aesthetic was huge just now for me. Thanks so much! 🙏🏻
I look at style in a similar way to accents. Everyone has one they just don't know it until someone points it out. And they have to put in the time for a style to develop just like an accent would. I like to make the comparison because photography is always referred to as a visual language.

It's extremely difficult to have a unique style in a world where everyone can be a photographer. My style isn't unique but I formed it by taking inspiration from two of my favourite photographers (Godlis and Bob Gruen) and basically mimicked them to start with. It all goes down to personal preference for me. Whether this is a good thing or not I take photos and edit my photos to a style that I really like and don't care too much what others think. I really dislike crystal clear images of people under perfect lighting conditions because I think its really boring an unnatural but it's exactly the kind of style that most of the photographers I know personally go for and that's okay.
I think you summed it up best, in the end you find your own style. First of course you learn from the others that went before you. But as you live your life you have your own taste in fashion, visual interests, your approach, and what works and doesn’t. How it all continues to grow creating your own style the more you photograph! You find that you put more of yourself into the photographs as you grow.
The only rule I have, is there are no rules!

Perfect Explanation...Style starts evolving when the eye which looks outside through viewfinder first looks inside through mind, heart and soul and then see the same glimpse in outside world and press the shutter silently, happily and peacefully walks ahead...Art gets created without any Purpose...
Thank you so much for this video. To me, photography is mostly a wonderful tool to express my mindset. It is a very personal thing and does not expect applause from elsewhere. But I am also grateful to all these wonderful photographers that inspire me because they resonate with my own mindset.

I have been taking photographs since I was 8 years old. I'm 56 now. I've used a lot of cameras to take photos through out the years. I don't have a style, or favor any cameras, because I have shot photos with a 5 dollar camera. The photographs have come out very beautiful. I also have never wanted to be like other people. I never had to photoshop anything before. What I do is turn photos of less color into black&white, and they look perfect afterwards. Everything I use already comes with the cameras, or my computer already installed. There are free softwares for photo editing that I have installed on my laptop. I don't have a style.🙂

Amazing talk! I see style as a construction much more than an adoption. You design, you plan, you buy the tools, you invest time and effort, brick by brick you go building it over time. Rare are the times you love it. When you're not rebuilding it all again, you're demolishing it to the ground until you find *THE* style, you're own thing. The one that kickstart you're heart again.

Great video and what you say is so on point. if you remain true to yourself, photographing what means something to you not someone else your style will reveal itself over time. Chasing a style is only going to lead to work that lacks emotion as you are not speaking for yourself it's like painting with numbers.
Seeking inspiration is a endless thing. The journey is the reward!

I think that we always go in search of the exceptional, without realizing that it is a subjective term. Originality doesn't count, nor does inspiration. The important thing is to take the camera with you to be able to photograph what I want to photograph because I like it, because it attracts me. What will make that exceptional shot is that I have known how to give the best focus, capture the best light, take the best framing, and above all, that there are more people who share my taste.
By the way, if you don't know him yet, I think you'll like Klavdij Sluban a lot.

Great video! I think Jonas Bendiksen said in his Magnum photography course to that when he is out of ideas he just reads. And eventually some idea comes to mind. By living, reading etc you develop your own interests and then you should just photograph the things that catch your attention based on what's going on in your head.

Great insightful vid as always! Style in photography is what develops when you stop chasing a style. See the world through your eyes and create from your heart. Stop thinking and start feeling. The path is there if you let go and allow yourself to wander, wonder, and explore. There is no map or shortcut. Our journey is but our own.

I absolutely adore Saul Leiter as well! Concerning my own style, I stopped worrying after taking a break from photography. I don't care anymore that I'm still experimenting all the time, that I still haven't settled for a specific style. Just goes to show that I am still maturing as a photographer and so do my pictures. On the bright side, it means that I'm still growing as a person so no reason to feel old yet! Since coming back to the hobby, I am thinking much more about the things behind the photographs, like story, meaning, importance, and the part of myself that lead to certain picture. It makes me way more content and gives me totally new ideas on what and how to shoot. I love street photography but now I'm also planning on some other things that feel more valuable, like potential pieces of actual art, and also benefit me and my personal struggles.

Excellent video! One's style should be organic to one's self. It should reflect one's interests, personality, views, etc. in an organic way. It will develop with time as one explores both their inner being and outside world. Whether others understand it is not important, often the greats had a style that took time for people to understand. By being organic to one's self it is by definition unique as we each have a unique voice. Aslo, as one lives one's style will deepen and 'mature' (if that is the right word).
Trying to 'find' one's style misses the point you already have a unique style if you let it develop.

Good video and well thought out for this very complex or complicated subject - as everyone has their own take or view on ‘photographic style’.
Indeed, best way I found to ‘discover my own style’ was to not just look at but ‘see’ other people’s work; professionals (current and past plus historical) and peers.
Secondly, as in literature, you need to communicate your idea through images - be absolutely meticulous and precise/creative in your photographic composition.

I am taking style and originality with a mindset of the consistent pushing the limits of my knowledge in photography to learn as much as possible .....for example my searching for knowledge of bird photoging this past year yielded a better understanding of bird types and their nature so I am able to capture them effectively.....the year before was COSPLAYERS , but I always found enjoyment in Street Photography and have always made time for that ....... all types of photography give you something psychologically and ergonomically ....example the speed you need for birding helped me with my street shooting .....and the COSPLAY shots have trained my eye more to framing of my images ..... I just love all aspects of this craft ..... I will forever be a student of this LIGHT CAPTURE ........THANK TH ....as usual your a ROCK STAR awesome vid......

great video, I have Autism, and love photography, analogue more so, but still love it. the best way I have to describe a style, and ART in general, what ever it's physical form, is the use of a medium, tools, etc. to express ones view of the world, or ones own soul in a physical medium; wether leatherwork, glass, painting, or in any photographic medium (am saying this to DELIBERATELY in-clude all other types like tintype/cyanotype/wet_plate/Dry_plate/x-ray/slide as well as digital and cellulose (modern films)); which allows one to adequately describe this subtle idea to another person, in a way which transends all language barriers, audible, of coarse!!

As well as style think in blocks of work that links together.
It helps to use one format, one film, one or max 2 lenses and chose one field, portrait, landscape, street whatever you love but consistency for me is the key.

Another great video , well realized ! I've always thought that asking the question 'do I have a personal style?' was a sure sign that you are thinking too much . Settle down , Make photos of the things you think are amusing .... It could be anything . Light and shadow , composition , texture , juxtaposition , expression , form , abstract , anything can lead you to a good photo . It will always be you looking through the viewfinder and pushing the button , capturing what you're seeing . Sharing what you're seeing . Anywhoo ,

Very thought provoking video Tatiana, in my opinion I don't think we can fully evolve when it comes to photography but searching our soul may help to develop our artistic style by letting our inner peace guide us with our journey every step of the way. 🤔

"Originality comes from within" that's very helpful to me. I get concerned that my style is to widely, and thinly spread out. Like a music band that plays great copy versions of Rap music , oldies, and then plays a set of country music. That would be very forgettable. At least I would try hard to forget. I hope that my style will just be influenced; by what I like in art. Janis Joplin had a style; that came bubbling to the surface. it was uniquely her, and multifaceted in her different songs. Style comes from within. Patty Smith loved the Rolling Stones. She sounds nothing like them. I could always see that influence; in her music. What we are passionate about,; becomes our style. In music; I always liked bands that had a few key influences. The best ones; took those few influences; to the next level. That became thier unique style. Van Gough was heavily influenced by Japanese art. He loved the detail/ look; and the way Japanese painters worked; very quickly.
Insightful video on an interesting subject. You touched on being true to yourself. Part of the difficulty of being original is that you must expose yourself to others. It is easier to get approbation by copying a known quantity, and then even if the world doesn't like your work, it is not YOU that they don't like. If you truly put yourself into your work, it is easy to be original, as there is only one you, but scary because if people don't like it, it is easy to think they don't like you.

Well said as always! Picasso created incredibly realistic art before he found his unique cubist style. I'm still in the self-searching phase, but it's a really rewarding journey to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. There's this temptation to want to try everything, like a kid in a candy store, and I think it's good to give into that temptation because you won't be left wondering about "what if". And you won't know whether you'll like or dislike something unless you try it.
Absolutely Carmen, that's one of the things I've always promised myself, to never wonder "what if", if I want to try something I will even if I have to work hard for it, that's the spirit of wanting to grow as a creator and person and its a good motto to have :)
I wonder. If. Just as Picasso's later work followed his earlier realistic work. And impressionism followed Rembrandt. And grunge music followed hair band rock and roll with complicated drum parts and guitar solos. If our own personal styles are a moment where we diverge or turn from so much of what we've been doing. Maybe for some it's gradual. Maybe for some it's more definable. Maybe some do lots of this and that and then one day they stop doing this and that and they start doing this new thing. Because they come to the end of the old thing. Maybe unbeknownst. To their inner self. They become a new self. Not because they intend to do something new. But because they have completed the old.
@@Smoothblue90 That's a really great point! Once you've explored all that you can explore (or at least close to it), then you'll start to create other paths. There's also the saying that you need to know the rules in order to break them, so in many of the examples you mentioned, people had a mastery of the existing art style, and then they were able to break out of the boundaries of that style. But yes, I agree that for many of these artists, doing a new thing may not have been something that was intentional or conscious, but it was a logical progression in their growth and learning process.

Interesting question you asked here. I would have to say the 1960''s Life magazines my parents often read and the fact I couldn't draw to save my life, got me interested in photography. When I stationed in Germany during the 1980's cemented my involvement with photography. You can't tell from the photo slide shows, but it was such photographers as Margaret Bourke White, Gordon Parks, Alfred Eisenstaedt and Ansel Adams who were my inspirations. But I tried not to be a Xerox machine or saw the world they way they did. Before I bore you to death, as elder one band photographer said in the Icon: Music through the Lens documentary, most of the new or digital photographers rapid fire 20 to 30 frames hoping several of them are in sharp focus, instead of learning how to manually. As though the camera is the boss and the photographer is employee. Just my two cents. Not to make a play or anything, but like your new look by the way. Continue the fine work.
I, too, was inspired by b&w work of Adams but drawn to the subject matter of Cartier-Bresson, the Capa brothers, Parks, Doisneau and the like. Today, after spending time as a newspaper shooter (best job I EVER held), I find myself continuing to document my local area because that is my palette.
Thanks T. For me 'style' is the name of the box wherein others put you. And then all things you do has to be in line with that box otherwise you're inconsistent... Don't mind style, Be yourself.
Personal style is forever evolving.
One's style is personal and revolves around their essence. Some see the 'world' in yellow, red and orange; others see it in gray, blue and black. Whether you are drawn to contrasts or shadings it all works and will continue to evolve as we all continue to evolve. See, react, capture... 📸

I thought of someone that you haven't covered yet, David Brookover. He's a landscape Photographer and may not fit your channel., but uses large format film and makes amazing work. His work with Hidden Light in Arizona is what made me think of his work.
If you look at his work in Platinum and Palladium, especially the way some of his photos were printed like shells, I believe you'll be intrigued.
