you are SOOOO correct Brenton! At my age(61) I have discovered the only thing we truly own is our soul. You can buy a car and pay cash for it, but if you don't pay the state your registration fees, eventually they'll seize it. You can work hard for 30 years and pay off a mortgage on your house, but if you fail to pay property taxes, they'll seize it from you. Most places won't let you live "off grid" so you have to connect to the electric grid, so you pay utility taxes. Your boat, if you don't register it and pay the fees, eventually you'll have it seized. When the American government has gotten so big it has become this monster that eats up every living once of your joy and prosperity, well, we've lost our freedom... And it doesn't seem to get any better as time goes on...I don't know about you, but having reached this age, I look back and realize that what a bunch of wasted time.. .I served my country, took two bullets for her, then was told they can't use me anymore, then I bought into the whole "American dream" BS, and realize that they can steal what ever hard work I've done and I can't get any of that time back. If I could do it all over again, I would have bought a boat, sailed away and seen the creation that God made for us, as he intended for us to be. Reliant on him for everything. That life, is a lot easier than living in the Babalonying system we are in now... sorry for the diatribe, just venting...maybe some that are younger than us will take heed I guess. God Bless you Brenton!

No one is truly independent. We all rely on others and the existence of the world around us. To many of us are so dependent on others that they couldn’t survive more than a few days without the support that others give. I strive for self reliance while being grateful for all the gifts I receive.

Having owned and sailed a 30 foot sailboat for over 25 years on Lake Erie, your observations are pretty accurate, especially about the importance of boat draft. The one area I think is understated is the amount of responsibility that you must assume when you are aboard boat. Not only do you have to worry about taking care of having the basic necessities of food, fuel and water but there is a whole new range of unfamiliar problems. These new problems are some of the things you mentioned like weather, tides and anchoring and must be paid attention to at risk of life and property. The one thing I don't miss about boating is not waking up where you went to bed when the weather has changed or an anchor has dragged. I really enjoy your channels, thanks for posting.

Totally agree with you, you are the master of your domain when you are living on the water in your own boat. When I was in my twenties I owned a large boat and spent 2 weeks at a time living on it during vacations and I loved every minute of it. To me there's nothing better than waking up on the water, and seeing the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I loved it would have done it full time except I had to work for a living. lol...

I sat up when I saw the castle. I've been there, done that. That's Caerlaverock Castle in Scotland near the Borders of England. It's pink stone from area and triangular shaped. It's ruins but still awesome construction back then. Most castle walls were 12ft thick.

So many good points Brenton. I was looking to buy a little cabin in Florida again but I'm leaning toward this boating idea more and more and with all the Hurricanes hitting Florida these days, it's more of a risk to have a structure down there now. With the boat you just cruise down in the winter and just like you said, leave and explore when you feel like it, sounds perfect.

I have my doubts you could do this without Wavy which isn't a bad thing. The really great thing is being able to pull up on the shore of a remote place, Build a fire and get a break from the boat, Very good thing.

Brenton I only say this because what he really did is even more crazy, but that race, the first around the world non stop solo: the entire race is fascinating. You have one guy who sort of went mad and called in a fake set of coordinates and eventually was just lost at sea, most think suicide. Bernard he WOULD possibly have won, he was in the best position out of the small group of racers. Anyways he was in the lead and he quit, and went non stop around the world most a full second time before he stopped. The person who won the race is named Robert Knox Johnston and I think his steel boat was called Swahili 3 or something like that. I’m too lazy to look it up but there is a book that covers this race called A Voyage for Madmen. It’s a recap and is excellent. I went on to read Bernard and Johnstons accounts of the race. You would love the books.

Hope you had safe travels buddy! How does the saying go? "No man is an island entirely to himself?" - It is hard to live in society sometimes - but people need people as well. I like your deep thoughts - that would be a good conversation over some coffee - BTW - I was at the Eagles concert last night in Omaha - they have a song that kind of answers your pontification - "Desperado" (obviously about being hurt in a relationship and not wanting to love again...but kind of plays nicely with what you were saying) and the last couple verses goes like this "Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? Come down from your fences, open the gate It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you. You better let somebody love you - You better let somebody love you before it's too late -
So - let down that draw bridge down - (at some point - at least you have Wavy! Best little beagle in the world). =)

This is essentially my mindset. All of my life I have dreamed of having my own small little island somewhere..strangely enough, I imagined it being in French Polynesia. Back in the 90s, they had this extreme lifestyle program called "Ushuaia:The Ultimate Adventure" and its crew often went to places like Bora Bora. I like to be master and commander of my life. When you are in societies, you quickly learn they are led by a handful of people and everyone else is a parrot. Those parrots try incessantly to get you to conform to whatever the ruling group wants. In the US, they want you to conform to the 9 to 5 grind...so, you can get loans to live in debt for a house and car. If you deviate even a bit from this template, society will harass you at every turn. The Powers that Be have already engineered the masses to be nothing more than little worker slves.

So....King Brenton of Shantylandia Pop. 2? Perhaps the smallest aspirational sovereign nation on earth. Maybe you could get with the sovereign citizen people and figure out how to truly cement the sovereignty of Shantylandia.
I think one of the keys is that you'll have to begin to establish diplomatic relations with other nations and that once other nations recognize you at sovereign that's one of the linchpins towards achieving true sovereignty. It's going to be an uphill climb with a staff of 1.

I read this great book once "The Kindness of Strangers." About a fella who hitchhiked across America with no money. Did it just as you're describing. It's a really good and hard to find book.

@@brentonsriversidehermitage the 23 and 26 ventures are my favorites. No balsa wood core and all resin. I could never find the right deal. So check this out. I was fishing on mama's dock one night and a guy posted the add for my 22 about 9PM. It was 20 minutes away. I went at 8 the next morning and we settled on a price and a handshake. Four people besides me already wanted to see it from several states. I picked up the boat a week later and paid the man $25,000. He was asking $27,500. Only 62 hours on the main engine! He was a dentist and had no time for boating. God sent me the perfect tiny private island Captain. 👍 Only wish I had a better toilet and shower but otherwise I don't regret a thing about my Dory. I will prob drop my latest video this week(G3 1860 oyster adventure, boat break down, and rescue). Anyhoo, I can't wait to see this beauty. Also I'm planning on joining your Backwaters and Backroads as an official member! Thought you may approve of that. As you know I live up here on YT and your channel just warms my heart. You insight as a shanty boat Great Loop Captain is invaluable. The wife and I ARE DOING this trip in the future if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise..... I guess if it did ride we would just have more moat available for our tiny island anyway. Thanks for thinking of me today when you saw that Dory. Good stuff brother! 😊
