Wild Camping on Top of an Iron Age Hillfort | Panoramic Views of Bannau Brycheiniog

  • Pen-y-Crug is an Iron Age Hillfort in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, on top you have panoramic views of the central Bannau Brycheiniog. It overlooks the nearby town of Brecon and it gives you great views of the surrounding mountain ranges. 2000 years ago, this hillfort would have been bustling with life. I've visited here many times before, and it has been calling my name for a long time to do a wild camp - it didn't disappoint, the views of the surrounding landscape were incredible! I hope you enjoy the video, if so please feel free to subscribe to join me on my future adventures.
    Thanks for stopping by,
    Ryan.

That was a ballsy camp out, mate. For a bet I camped out under Pentre Ifan, a neolithic tomb in the Preseli mountains, Pembrokeshire. Everything went swimmingly until the sun went down and the Preseli ponies started running amok around my camp! After a few cans and a couple of smokes things really got spooky. I swear I heard footsteps and murmers of conversation but every time i poked my head out of my bivvi, nothing there! This repeated itself a number of times throughout the small hours and got too much me and I tapped. Never felt that kind of dread in my life and packing away my gear and the walk out back to my car freaked me out completely! LOL, have you ever had any moments that have freaked you out so much you've had to tap? Loved the video, mate, and you do make some lovely looking dishes even without the meat! Give Toby a pat for me. Cheers

It was a great camp this one, mate, and it was good to tick it off the list. That sounds like a good camp, shame you had to bail. I discovered an awesome Bronze Age cairn in Mid Wales last year, I'm going to camp inside it once the weather's better. I've never had to bail from a camp tbh - I've been in some bad storms, ripped tent, snapped poles, etc, but I've always managed to ride them out. I did camp next to a canal on the outskirts of Glasgow once, I'd just dropped off as the sun set, and I was suddenly awoken by the noise of a canal boat passing by with a rowdy gang of drunken lads on there. As they passed my tent they started shouting abuse and throwing bottles and cans at my tent - they had a shock when I flew out of there and started chasing after their boat throwing their bottles back at them and returning the verbal abuse, ha ha.

@@wildaboutwales I know, mate, I just let my imagination run away with me and the smokes didn't help!! Yeah, it's a great spot and easy to get to, I will try it again when I'm home in the summer and try and win some money back! I didn't know you were from Aberdare, that's where my Nan was from, and she was a no nonsense type of girl who would probably have done the same as you on that canal in Glasgow, LOL! You can take the boy out of Aberdare, init!! Storms, ripped tents and pissed up Glaswegians I can handle but things of a more supernatural nature are a different cuttle of fish, mix that with an over active imagination you have a recipe for absolutely shitting oneself!! I played rugby up in Aberdare back in the early 80's when I was still at school, we won the game but the lads pelted our bus with rocks and glass bottles,LOL, just wondering if you were part of that motely crew! Hope you don't mind me asking, was wondering what regiment you were with, I read you were in the forces on another comments section from one of your earlier videos. My old man was in 26 regiment of the royal artillery and he thought I'd follow him into service as most of my family have a military background. I took the easier option of an electrical apprenticeship! Another overnighter I've been toying with is a night in Twm Sion Canti's cave along the banks of the Towi in Carmarthenshire. Check that one out!

@@thomasdilworth7691 no, I was a quiet lad in the '80s so it wouldn't have been me, lol. Where in Aberdare was your nan from?
I was in the RRW, joined in 89. I will check out that Canti's cave. Thanks, mate.

@@wildaboutwales I couldn't tell you where in Aberdare my Nan was from TBH, she left there after getting her nursing qualifications and worked in a military hospital in Exeter. After the war she settled in Pembroke. A tough woman, no messing with her! Haha, I knew before asking that you'd serve in a Welsh regiment! Cymru am Byth!

Fabulous intro sequence Ryan, your editing is top notch. A hill I have been up quite a few times but have never thought of it as a camp spot although its a great location for sunrise so maybe one day. I am so fed up of the weather. Looking forward to your videos on the Brecon Beacons way. I have the book but have not done it and I don't think my knees can manage long distances these days. Can I ask where in the Beacons you are from - I live in Ebbw Vale but I am thinking yout accent is further west of me. Btw, your are right, Toby is deffo the star of the show. I miss my little jack russell. Just realised today (Feb 26th) is the day he went over the rainbow bridge. Stunning sunrise morning - wondering what gear you use to film apart from the drone? Atb Al

Thanks, Alan, I really appreciate that. I'm an Aberdare boy born and bred, living in Penderyn these days. Sorry to hear your doggo passed away, we become so close to them, I can't even begin to imagine Tobes not by my side. I'm using the GoPro Hero 12 and my Google Pixel 7a phone to film, I've added them in my kit description.

Thank you, mate! I'm Aberdare born and bred, living in Penderyn now, so I've got the Beacons on the doorstep. I can't wait to get on the Beacons Way, I hiked the Snowdonia Way last year, which was epic. I'm not going to put a time scale on it tbh, mate. I'm happy to do big miles, but I'll have to think of Toby, so will take it as it comes. I love a bit of Japanese whisky, I haven't had a bottle for a while now - guess I'll have to take one on a camp soon. I'll check out that Harmony, never tried it!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! I'm using the Hero 12 which has the time/night lapse modes built in. For the time lapse I set it to timewarp mode and for the night lapse I set it to Star Trails (short) mode.

Hi mate, doing a wild camp on or around table mountain this weekend,do you no of a safe place to park overnite,i no there are car parks in the crickhowell town but are they 24hr and safe?

    • @wildaboutwales
      @wildaboutwales  Před 3 měsíci

Hiya mate, I would say the car park in Crickhowell is safe, but I don't know if they are 24hr, sorry.
There's an Indian restaurant (Red Indigo) on Brecon road, I just looked on Google Maps and they have parking spaces at the front and rear of their building - you could maybe ask them if you can park there for the night.
Another option is, just down the road from the Indian, turn left into Oakfield Drive and there's a few dead end streets there, it's a safe looking quiet area - maybe you could just park in a street there for the night. That's also near the route up to Table Mountain from Gwern-vale. Other than that I don't really know of anywhere.
Good luck and have a good one!
