One of those rare video game moments when story, gameplay and music are so beautifully woven together.
James Ondrey Undertale nailed the music and story, but the gameplay part wasn't good enough to match that level.
Obsidemon First of all, why would I hate you for having a different opinion? I know many people would, but I don't.
Secondly, are you talking about Undertale or Celeste? If you mean Undertale I understand why it may seem generic to you.
Obsidemon I agree with you; Celeste's story is beyond amazing, and it has those symbolics regarding mental illnesses - something that's not that usual. And you're right; Undertale's fandom can be salty, toxic, cringy and gross, but there are 'good fans' as well, such as those who make marvelous song covers or comics.
Obsidemon You're 100% right about that! Some fans just need to chill down. And a LOT.

But in more serious words, lena, I just wanted to thank you for this game, I struggle with autism and I usually give up when something gets to hard. Madeline's drive to accomplish something perfectly fits mine, so I'm 100% completing this so me and Madeline can finally do something important.

Can I just say how much I love when it starts "glitching out" as she heals her psyche through this battle, as the boundaries between her and her shadow dissolve?
This is a really nice effect, and it really adds to this already very tense moment in the game :)
Huh..
I never noticed the "glitching out" during the fight in the game. Interesting.
David Friedman if you watch matts video on the earlier development builds you see it alot more in the visuals. In the final game the badeline sprite was toned down a little I think in terms of the glitching effect.
In my case it just wrecked my head, but I can still appreciate the symbolism of it.

i liked to call her ms depression
That moment when you realize the synth doing the main melody sounds uncannily like the synth that does Madeline/Badeline's 'voice' throughout the game. She's literally confronting herself through the melody

I can honestly say this game gave me an existential crisis. All my life its been about "destroying" my mental illness and "getting over it" and "over coming" it. That's all fine and dandy, but this game suddenly opened my eyes that that was NOT the only way to deal with it. You have to be able to understand yourself and your mental illnesses. Listen to it when it speaks to you, but try to work together to overcome your fears, not shove it in a closet and pretend it doesn't exist. *I* don't exist without my mental illnesses, and vice versa. So instead of trying to destroy a part of myself, Celeste taught me to try and understand what the other part of me is saying. Acknowledge it, but don't be overruled by it. Listen to its fears, and urge it and yourself to be determined. Find common ground.
I seriously had an epiphany when I played this game. It shifted the axis of my entire life, and definitely in a positive way. This song itself made me start to cry and laugh at the same time. Thank you, thank you so much developers. This game literally changed my life. A lot of people may say that, but I *mean* it. Thank you, thank you so so much. I can't even begin to express the absolute relief and joy at finding this game. Thank you, thank you so so much.
Sorry for the rambling ^^
Wolfie Theo said it best. Badeline was a twisted defense mechanism, one that had the idea of protecting you in her interests, but didnât understand you well enough to actually accomplish that. Reconciling with her meant that she could finally work with you and protect you without holding you back.
Iâm actually kinda reminded of the ending of Inside Out now that I think about it. Itâs a truly touching theme, and Iâm so glad the game impacted you in this way~
I am truly happy for you. I have seen too many people who hated themselves without even being aware of this fact.
Being aware will not change everything, I will recquire time and patience, but this is definitly the hardest step.
I have exactly the same problem (such as many of us).
I was already aware of this, but it is so easy to forget it. That is why this game also stroke me deeply : the way these feelings were conveyed reminded me hard. The message itself can often be heard, it is not new, but the way this game convey this message is much more striking than just an empty talk.
Don't worry, you are not annoying anyone here ^^
Thank you â€ïž

With me, it's the driving beat and capricious composition. I mean, one verse it's focused around upbeats, the next it's the downbeats; but it still flows together so organically!! It's really amazing, and the experience in the game and it complement each other so wonderfully. This song/part of the game truly is the climax of the experience.

Kitsune HS Glad you're out of danger, comrade. May you continue to rise.
Kitsune HS it hit me hard too. Itâs really cool to see someone that felt the same way about the game. I did a full in depth review on it only a few weeks ago, this is quite possibly the best video game I have ever played in my entire life.
So much life to it. Straight 10 of 10.
I believe I played Celeste during quarantine, probably simultaneously the most horrible and emotionally devastating, but also emotionally cathartic, experience in my entire life. It really helped me to view anxiety in a different way, and coming back viewing some of the ridiculous workarounds I made for different strawberries and such is a really telling metaphor for how my anxiety has been my entire life. I've always viewed things as a struggle, and coming to view them as nothing but something I can get past that gets easier with experience has really been life changing for me. To some people who haven't grown up with such video games it might sound ridiculous to say video games like this have changed my life, but they literally have. Celeste is just that type of game, yknow?

I'm very sorry to hear that you were in a very dangerous place. I hope that you're doing better now and all of those other things are great to hear.
Nobody will likely believe me, but when I was replaying Celeste for my nephews to see while also sharing the concepts and ideas of the game with them, once we got to this part between Madeline and Badeline, my Father stepped in to watch as well and I was able to not only beat the entire section with no deaths, but all the while explaining that sort of inner conflict we all have with ourselves from time to time with them, I may not have a lot of awesome achievements, but going through that alone despite my own anxiety of presenting to others really felt like one great achievement to me!
Good job random 3 years ago you did great
"let's climb this mountain, Together" This part just gave me chills, it was the start of this Amazing scene and it references to when you first see "badeline" and she says "let's go home, together" I just love this game
This game actually taught me that it wasn't ok to constantly try to destroy and conquer your mental illness. It's a part of you, why would you try to destroy yourself? Instead it taught me that it was ok to work with it, to battle alongside it, to even _teach it_ that what it was doing was wrong and to reassure it it was still learning, that _you're_ still learning.
It taught me that even though change is scary, it needs to happen outside AND inside of you. That the same patterns will get you killed. That you need to stick up for yourself when things don't feel right.
*That you can rise to the top of anything with patience and perseverance but also taking care of yourself*
That's what this game taught me.
This boss fight was one of the best moments in my gaming life. Sound track was absolutely impressive
When that talking animation showned Madeline with a glint of determination in her eyes when telling Part of You that they will cling together gave me a feeling nothing before then gave me. I felt like I could do anything and that I had already reached the summit. I knew that Madeline could conquer Part of You. Thank you so much Lena for that feeling and Celeste is my favorite game of all time. Iâll never forget the feeling.
Sapa Sanchan Funny you mention that, I love that line and extra glint effect, cause earlier in the game, when you first meet Badeline, something very similiar happens, but the other way around.
Before this fight, Madeline asks her other self "Lets climb this mountain... together." And that's when you see that sparkle.
When you meet Badeline, she asks her original self "Lets go back home... together." But instead of a sparkle, Badeline tilts her head left to right, with a bored expression, as if she's saying "None of this matters, lets give up."
Little details that tell a ton of story.

Chanting in the background evokes a sense of what I could most accurately call "tribalness". Since fighting during tribal times was for survival and sometimes out of desperation and fear, it really emphasizes that Madeline and Badeline have reached rock bottom. The design of the moving platforms earlier in the level seem to hint at this as well. I don't know if this was intended, but regardless, it's brilliant.

This was so intense. I love it and its part in the game is stellar
All video games have their bosses that you have to defeat, in real life one of the most important and difficult ones you will face is that other part of yourself.
Definitely one of the better boss battles in platform games simply because it has lots of platforming and you're always active (despite the boss having only a few attacks).
Also, can this be considered to be a final boss?
I dunno, can it? *looks at Level 6 B-Side*
Tony TheTGR | Wait what?
I'd argue the Summit is the real final boss. The game was never really about combat (even if you do goomba-stomp a few eldritch abominations), it's about the challenges that the mountain offers. And the Summit is the hardest challenge the mountain can give you (discounting B- and C-sides).
By this logic, the core + B & C sides are the secret bosses.
artman40 good question... I kinda felt like the summit was the final boss despite that being really cheesy. That being said for this game the summit being the final boss kinda works

One cannot truly abandon one's negative side, but one can make peace with it, although the process is expected to be violent, just like it is in real life.
After all, to quote "Parasite Eve":
*"The worst enemy lies within the self."*
This whole part of the game reminded me a lot of Hollow Knight. In that game, whenever you die, a part of you (or your regrets) is let loose and you have fight yourself to deal with your regrets and return to your normal state.
"The greatest enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts" -Buddha
I know that all too well...
It's insane to think you can abandon your negative side, but you don't make peace with _it,_ just the fact that you'll be fighting your demons til the day you die. Don't give in. And if you fall, pick yourself up and keep fighting.
Never stop trying to improve yourself as person, for your sake and for the sake of those around you.

I love the angry piano-synth clash that wails out every time Madeline and Badeline touch during the fight. Their respective instruments crash against each other in that moment!
I loved how the character said something like: Let's climb back up, together. The face our character made when she said that topped it off. Then we proceed to chase the Part Of Me. This chase and song was one of my favorite parts in the game.
Pepega :mega: PEPEEEEEEEEEGA
The sheer triumph of this song laced with the still intense and sometimes glitching out sounds of the depression avoiding your confrontation...one of the best boss fights ever, really. I was with Madeline 100% here.
When it said "Heyyyy-eeyy... YAH" I felt that
I found myself breathing in sync with the hey yahs during this fight. It really helped me keep my composure and focus and also helped me like MAGICALLY get through a bit I was struggling with as soon as it kicked in.
Discovering that there is an awesome boss fight in the game only gets better when it has the best boss theme ever. Played through the game practically blind in one sitting a couple years ago and it still has a permanent effect on me
This one is definitely my favourite in the ost. I love that choir thingy whatever you call it, the fact that some of the music is with Madeline/ Badelineâs voice, and I adore that it gets all glitchy later on
You can't outrun your own reflection. But it can't outrun you either.
This game was such a refreshing experience to me. Thank you developers. P
Gotta love that main theme in minor scale leitmotif
I am a shadow... the true self.
You know you did excellent when you can distort the song and it still sounds great.
I searched "hey ya celeste" and found what I needed
Getting massive Mordremoth flashbacks here (and I love it). Awesome job on this soundtrack!
This music inspired me through a bout of depression. If it weren't for this piece, and the part of the game it comes with, I'd be in a horrible place in life. All the symbolism and metaphors within Celeste itself, combined with this song, helped me.
Not only that, but it also opened my eyes to musical taste and what I want *my* songs to sound like. So thank you for this game's OST, from the bottom of my heart.
@@ENNWAY remember we are who we are for our abilities ASD isnt a disability
Nothing is
Is it just me, or does this song somehow get a thousand times better when trying to do the Badeline fight while carrying around the golden strawberry?
For some reason i think that the Golden strawberry is live and that he is encouraging madeline
@@tibojous6052 having the strawberry with me while doing the boss fight is very intense with high stakes. The theme is a big âthis is itâ as it feels like it goes by faster than the rest of the level (I died on the final room and still donât have the gold berry yet lmao)
The first time in celeste where I felt like I wasn't fighting an uphill battle. You're finally fighting back and every time I got knocked down on this level, I always got up, desperate to give it another shot. Increadible peice of music aiding the amazing storytelling and gameplay of one of the best games i've ever played.
this whole sequence I was just shouting "get back here you little shit"
I can thank you enough Lena Raine for this amazing piece of music. I has helped me with my depression, and overthinking. It helps me push myself to continue when I know I'm close to my breaking point. Just know you have touched others.
Another amazing piece!
I like how in your first encounter with badeline your running from her but in this encounter badeline is the one running from you
