  • The best time to visit a market town is market day! Because Stroud is said to have the “best Farmer’s Market in the Cotswolds” we had to pay a visit and see for ourselves! The market was fabulous, and there is loads of other good shopping in Stroud. But best of all was the CHEESE! Watch for extremely delicious cheesiness as I show a luscious savoury crepe and some tasty raclette being made!

I know it's one year later, but I'm SO GLAD you discovered the Stroud Market, and the raclette. As a confirmed carnivore, I can testify that the sausage stall sells some of the very best tasting sausage in the UK. But one has to get there early. The specialist mushroom stall is also fab and so is the Stroud Smokery stall, where you can get interesting things like smoked pineapple chunks and smoked harissa and other unusual things. In the spring we got some wild garlic pesto and wild garlic infused sauerkraut. The market actually runs on Fridays and Saturdays, one needs to get there early for the most in demand items, like the mushrooms.

I meant to ask, Dara have you visited any of the many farm shops dotted around the Cotswold countryside? I'd love to see a video of yours on that. I have at least 4 within a 15 to 20 minute drive. In fact I buy all my fresh meat, dairy, and most produce from them. If you've not done so yet, I invite you to do a round of them with me in the summer. Some are basic, some are posher, all are fab.

I used to like them, but was finding that (in my area anyways) it was a case of 'when is a farmers market, not a farmers market' Seeing one advertised, whizzing down there, only to find it'd be 80+% craft stalls, candles, doilies, and bric-a-brac. The 'farmers' in the title implies food, and that was becoming increasingly not the case. I tend to skip them now, not that i've seen one in a while. I favour food festivals nowadays... So why are farmers markets more expensive than shops? Aren’t they cutting out a whole seller and the supermarket. Products should be cheaper, not more expensive. Money grabbing I think…..

We don't think that you can have a farmer's market where they don't sell honey.

Local honey is great, and I tried some lime flower honey this summer that was amazing in herb tea or on toast.
